For at least three hours, Ye Siqian had been pulling at his hair in frustration.
He shot a glare at Ye Bing. "Sister! Does it have to be this way? I don’t want her to hate me!"
Ye Bing's face was cold. "What kind of look is that? Wasn’t it you who begged me to help you win her over?"
Ye Siqian stammered, "But... but if we go on like this, even if our plan works, in her eyes, I’ll just be her little brother. How can we be siblings? We’re the only family we have. I like her; how can it just be a sibling relationship?"
Ye Bing scoffed at his words. "A mere romantic relationship can't compare to family."
Unwilling to back down, Ye Siqian met her gaze defiantly. "Romantic relationships are important too! If we could get married, I could be with her for a lifetime!"
Ye Bing had never seen someone so naively foolish. He was at a loss for words and patiently left one last remark. "There are countless couples who appear united but are actually distant; even marriage can end in divorce. Only familial bonds are truly unbreakable."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving no room for negotiation.
Ye Siqian, in despair, called after him, "But what if the plan fails? What if she doesn’t forgive me?"
Ye Bing continued walking with his hands in his pockets, indifferent. His deep-set eyes narrowed slightly, revealing a dangerous glint. He thought to himself, foolish boy, whether or not she forgives you is irrelevant; you were the one who brought her here to witness this drama.
Zheng Mengni sat in the car, dazed, replaying the secret she had just overheard in her mind.
Whether it was their first encounter at the amusement park or their reunion at the art exhibition, it was all orchestrated by Ye Bing. He had teamed up with Ye Siqian to drive her out of the Zheng Family.
The mix-up with the two children had nothing to do with her, yet Ye Bing placed the blame squarely on her shoulders—this was utterly unreasonable. If Ye Bing insisted on pursuing this course of action, she would not allow him to waltz into the Zheng Family so easily.
Zheng Mengni took a chocolate-filled candy from her bag; when she felt anxious, she liked to eat something sweet to calm herself down.
She tore open the wrapper and popped it into her mouth, the refreshing orange flavor flooding her senses. As she bit into the candy, the sweet and sour filling burst onto her tongue. She glanced up and caught a glimpse outside the window.
Two familiar figures stood at the entrance of the hotel. Ye Siqian noticed the familiar luxury car and sensed something in the air. The tinted windows obscured his view of the interior, but his demeanor radiated obedience and humility, with a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Beside him, Ye Bing was on the phone, his expression stern and indifferent to his surroundings. He rarely smiled, reserving his few insincere grins solely for Zheng Mengni.
Zheng Mengni coldly withdrew her gaze; Ye Bing was truly putting on a show. In front of her, he seemed like a different person—indeed, one should not judge by appearances.
Zheng Mengni understood Ye Bing's scheme and was determined not to let him succeed easily. She also knew that with the final exams approaching, it would be foolish to let his words affect her now. Since he hadn’t confronted her directly, she would pretend to be oblivious for the time being. She would remain still while he believed he had the upper hand, waiting until she had completed all her responsibilities before striking unexpectedly.
For now, her main priority was to maintain her grades without resorting to cheating, which required hard work on her part. After returning to school, Zheng Mengni immersed herself in her studies. Besides her academic pursuits, she also kept up with her departmental duties.
Especially during the period leading up to the senior graduation party, Zheng Mengni worked tirelessly as the head of the organizing committee, spinning like a top as she moved around campus. Her busy figure could be seen everywhere.
Some were surprised to notice that Wei Jingxi had not been seen around Zheng Mengni for quite some time. Connecting this with recent news, it seemed they had indeed fallen out. In the past, wherever Zheng Mengni was, Wei Jingxi was sure to be by her side. He had always made a grand entrance when picking her up from school in his extravagant car.
However, this once high-profile individual had seemingly vanished without a trace and no longer appeared in public view.
Zheng Mengni had no time to ponder over such matters. When asked about him occasionally, she would simply smile and provide vague answers that left no room for further inquiry. She consistently prioritized her studies, eager to cram every bit of knowledge into her mind.
The weather was hot and dry. One evening, Zheng Mengni's nosebleed dripped onto her draft paper. Unfazed, she tore off a piece of paper to wipe it away and stuffed another piece into her nostril before continuing to study diligently.
Seeing this, Shen Die couldn't help but exclaim, "Xiao Ni, you can't possibly have been deceived by Wei Jingxi into such emotional turmoil that you're studying so recklessly just to distract yourself!"
Zheng Mengni turned her head back to look at Shen Die, who was lying on the bed playing a game, unwilling to put down the pen in her hand.
With tissues stuffed up her nose, her bright eyes held a hint of confusion, making her appear somewhat dazed.
Shen Die chuckled, "Baby, did you give yourself a nosebleed from holding in your frustration?"
Blood trickled from the other nostril, prompting Zheng Mengni to quickly tilt her head back and head towards the bathroom.
By the time she returned to the room after cleaning up, Shen Die had somehow bounced off the bed and wrapped an arm around Zheng Mengni's shoulders.
"I can't watch this anymore. How could someone like Wei Jingxi lead you astray like this? Baby, I’ve decided to save you."
Zheng Mengni softly protested, "Studying isn’t really going astray, and besides, what does it have to do with Wei Jingxi?"
Shen Die looked at Zheng Mengni with an expression that said she understood without needing to explain further, shaking her head in disappointment. "It’s fine; only someone like me would understand when a woman is being sarcastic."
"Stop studying for now. Let me help you relax."
Zheng Mengni didn’t want to refuse Shen Die's suggestion. After all, she hadn’t taken a break in a while. A good night’s rest might boost her energy and improve her study efficiency; there was no harm in that.
She obediently handed her phone to Shen Die. "What game are you playing? I haven’t downloaded it yet; can you show me?"
Shen Die laughed, "Xiao Ni, let’s play something fun tonight; I’ll introduce you to even better games."
