Wei Jingxi lifted his eyelids and asked, "When will you be willing to protect me for once?"
Zheng Mengni smiled faintly, "Just wait a bit; perhaps that day will truly come."
Suddenly, she remembered something. She fished out the diamond ring hanging from her neck, took it off with great care, and held it in her palm.
Zheng Mengni opened her hand and presented the diamond ring to Wei Jingxi. Under the dim lights, the pink diamond sparkled brilliantly.
Wei Jingxi opened his mouth slightly, staring intently at Zheng Mengni, as if trying to discern her emotions at that moment. He couldn't figure it out. What did it mean?
In her shimmering eyes, there was a hint of regret. "I’m really grateful that you gave me such an expensive gift; it’s the most precious gift I’ve ever received in my life. But our current relationship makes it hard for me to continue wearing it comfortably."
Wei Jingxi scoffed coldly, "We? What relationship? What do you think it is?"
"What do you think it is?" he pressed.
Zheng Mengni hesitated and tentatively suggested, "F-friends? Is that okay?"
He responded with a noncommittal hum before suddenly grabbing Zheng Mengni by the chin and kissing her.
The kiss came on strong and was incredibly intense. Wei Jingxi wrapped his arms around Zheng Mengni's slender waist, kissing her without restraint.
This kiss felt overwhelmingly wronged. It was only when he realized that Zheng Mengni showed no intention of resisting that his sense of grievance finally surfaced.
Everyone was pressuring him to break off the engagement; everyone wanted to stop him from pursuing her.
After just a few seconds of kissing, Zheng Mengni began to push him away. It was too much; her lips felt like they were about to swell from the force.
Wei Jingxi was truly conflicted. He pressed his lips against hers tightly, afraid she would hear the sobs he was about to let slip.
Zheng Mengni didn’t resist; he felt wronged.
Zheng Mengni struggled against him, feeling more wronged than ever. Yet, as Wei Jingxi realized that in a moment she would return to the gaze of the crowd, he couldn't help but ease his grip. Even now, he was still thinking of her, not wanting to make her feel embarrassed.
Zheng Mengni continued to squirm in his embrace, and Wei Jingxi was reluctant to let go. He felt more clear-headed than ever; if he released her now, he didn't know when he would have the chance to hold her again.
The drunken man pouring the wine had been bribed by Wei Jingxi; otherwise, he couldn't think of any way to meet Xiao Ni. Those seemingly virtuous hypocrites were watching too closely, giving him no opportunity to approach her.
Just as Wei Jingxi was about to let go, someone yanked at his collar forcefully. He was forced to lean back while taking a hard punch to the stomach. Looking up, he saw Tan Yan glaring at him, and the atmosphere instantly turned ominous.
"Let go," she commanded, her voice cold and sharp. "Can't you hear me?"
If she could, Tan Yan truly wished she could ruin Wei Jingxi's lipstick-stained lips.
Wei Jingxi scoffed at Tan Yan's words; the more he looked at her, the more disgusted he felt. As he stood up, he grabbed Tan Yan by her collar.
"You shameless mistress! I’m not dead yet and you’re already thinking of taking my place!"
Tan Yan smiled coldly. "Mistress? You must still be dreaming. Don't you know that the marriage between the Zheng and Wei families has long been annulled?"
"It’s not an annulment!" Wei Jingxi's eyes blazed with anger. "We are dating; we like each other!"
Zheng Mengni looked up, bewildered, gazing at the sky.
Tan Yan wore a mocking expression, too lazy to expose the truth. "The love contract has expired; you two have broken up."
"Have we broken up?" Wei Jingxi didn’t want to acknowledge her words and turned to Zheng Mengni, asking almost instinctively.
Tan Yan also looked over with a gentle demeanor. "Yes, Xiao Ni, you two have already broken up, right?"
Zheng Mengni was stunned. Why was everyone throwing this hot potato into her hands?
