"What’s wrong, Ni Ni?" Wei Jingxi's expression instantly softened as he looked over the obstacle in front of him, his eyes lighting up at Zheng Mengni like a student eager for the teacher's attention.
Zheng Mengni sighed, "What do you mean 'what's wrong'? You're blocking my easel. Didn't you promise not to interfere with my studies?"
Wei Jingxi let out a defeated "oh" and stepped back a few paces, obediently making way. But he wasn't going to let Zhou Minshi off easily. He circled around to the other side, squatting down by Zheng Mengni's feet like a loyal guard dog.
Zheng Mengni glanced down at him, and Zhou Minshi did the same.
"I want to learn too. I'll just squat here and stay quiet, so don't worry," Wei Jingxi said as he naturally rested his hand on Zheng Mengni's knee, needing something to lean on while squatting.
"Alright then." Zheng Mengni didn’t stop him or move his hand away.
"I'm starting to draw now, so pay close attention," Zhou Minshi said, his lips pressed together, his cold voice sounding somewhat indifferent as it effortlessly drew Zheng Mengni's gaze.
If hurting someone wasn’t against the law, Zhou Minshi would have liked to break his hand.
Zheng Mengni's beautiful eyes were fixed intently on Zhou Minshi’s hand, seriously studying his brushwork.
Meanwhile, Wei Jingxi misunderstood the situation and instinctively began to examine his own hands. He raised and lowered them repeatedly for comparison.
Zhou Minshi’s hands were long and slender, elegantly shaped.
But his own skin was fairer, and his fingers were longer than Zhou Minshi’s, more practical in appearance.
As this realization dawned on him, Wei Jingxi felt his ears flush with heat, a proud smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Though Zhou Minshi found Wei Jingxi irritating, he was particularly earnest when teaching Zheng Mengni.
Previously, he hadn’t wanted to teach because he believed he could always paint for Zheng Mengni as long as she needed him.
But now it seemed better to teach her well; the more effort he put in, the more it highlighted Wei Jingxi’s incompetence.
For a moment, Zhou Minshi even felt fortunate that Wei Jingxi had stubbornly followed him; recognizing his own inadequacies wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Yet Zhou Minshi was overthinking it; a young master born with a silver spoon in his mouth wouldn’t know the meaning of self-doubt.
This week, as Wei Jingxi had said, he hadn’t missed a single class or been late for even a second.
As a reward, Zheng Mengni agreed to go on a date with him over the weekend.
Two Days Before the Date
On Friday evening, in the exhibition hall of Ruihua World Trade Hotel, Wei Jingxi entered the venue through the first aisle, guided by a hostess. There was still some time before the auction officially began.
The hall was bustling with people, a swirl of elegant attire and lively chatter. Wei Jingxi rested his chin on his hand, focused on messaging Zheng Mengni.
Zheng Mengni: "I’ve applied to cancel our video calls for Friday and Saturday."
He replied: "Why?"
"Because I need to complete the task I set for myself. If I don’t finish it, I can’t hang out with you this weekend."
Wei Jingxi asked: "What task?"
Zheng Mengni quickly responded: "I want to try recording a song by myself. I've been practicing for a long time."
"Oh, then I’ll just be bored and lonely. Goodnight."
Wei Jingxi feigned disappointment, hoping for some comforting words, but to his surprise, Zheng Mengni simply replied with a goodnight as well.
On stage, the host succinctly explained the auction rules and bidding procedures, marking the official start of the auction. The competition for the first few items was not very intense; Shui Ling was quite small, and Wei Jingxi glanced at it briefly before lowering his head to scroll through his phone. The bright screen displayed Zheng Mengni’s charming oval face, her smile radiant and captivating.
As the bidding progressed past the halfway point, they finally reached the first small climax of the evening.
