In the afternoon after school, Zheng Mengni arrived at the hospital as promised to visit Wei Jingxi. She entered the room quietly, holding a bouquet of flowers, a beautiful smile gracing her lips. "I’m here, Wei Jingxi."
Upon hearing her voice, Wei Jingxi instinctively held his breath, his gaze fixed on the girl approaching him. Zheng Mengni's eyes sparkled with joy as she wore a light pink headband adorned with pearls. Her outfit consisted of a matching knitted short-sleeve top and white floral shorts paired with creamy knee-high socks.
She placed the flowers beside the bed and turned to draw back the curtains. As light flooded into the room, Wei Jingxi squinted slightly, having spent so long in darkness. The air was filled with a sweet fragrance, and he glanced at the flowers by his bedside, their delicate petals soft and silky like silk. He unconsciously held his breath.
Zheng Mengni stood by the bed, bending down to meet his gaze. Her soft hair cascaded over her shoulders, gently brushing against his hand. She reached out, her fingertips just grazing the bruise on his cheek before she hesitated, her clear eyes reflecting concern. "How could you get hurt like this?"
Wei Jingxi gasped after a moment of realization, "Ouch! Be gentle when you poke."
Zheng Mengni quickly withdrew her hand. "I’m sorry! I didn’t know you were hurt so badly."
He grasped her wrist with a sigh. "If you want to touch it, just do it. It’s just a small injury." As he spoke, he pressed her hand against his face. To his surprise, her hand felt like chilled whipped cream—cool and soft, providing some relief from the pain.
Zheng Mengni looked down at him, her quiet demeanor strikingly beautiful. Remembering Wei Nanxuan's advice from earlier that day, Wei Jingxi suppressed his feelings of greed and obsession.
He tentatively asked, "Ni Ni, have you thought about moving our engagement ceremony up?"
Zheng Mengni replied gently, "Isn’t it a bit too early? We’re still in school."
"Right now we can get engaged, and when you graduate, we can get married right away." His eyes sparkled with unmasked anticipation as he spoke. "Getting engaged won’t interfere with your studies; besides, no amount of studying can outweigh the benefits of our families’ union."
Zheng Mengni furrowed her brows slightly and spoke softly, "I understand that our families’ alliance is crucial. But sometimes I fantasize that perhaps I could bring enough benefit to the Zheng family to outweigh this marriage contract. You might not understand why someone born into privilege still has to work so hard in their studies when there seems to be no room for improvement. However, that perfect score is largely due to my prestigious background."
She continued with gratitude in her tone, "And I must thank you for that paternity test which revealed that my perfect score was achieved through cheating. Now I can’t afford to be foolish because if I subtract those points earned through dishonesty, I have to start all over again."
"That one remaining point might be something I cannot bear to part with—my pride."
Wei Jingxi was taken aback. "Zheng Mengni, what are you talking about?"
"Isn’t it what you said? A false claim takes over what rightfully belongs." Zheng Mengni feigned innocence and naivety as she looked at him with sorrowful eyes.
You always imply that the Zheng Family will kick me out once they learn the truth. Perhaps my real mother is still out there, lost at this very moment. I shamelessly occupy her eighteen years of a life filled with wealth, while she, unfortunately, struggles to survive in the meager existence I once had.
What does that have to do with you? You were just a baby back then; what did you know? Wei Jingxi sneered. Besides, after all these years, what truth do you think you know? Maybe she passed away long ago, and that's why they took you in to the Zheng Family!
Logically speaking, Wei Jingxi should be cursing that girl who had long since passed away—she should be the rightful fiancée he desires. He never intended to marry Zheng Mengni; it was always the daughter of the Zheng Family he sought.
