After taking a shower, Zheng Mengni changed into her pajamas and walked straight back to her room. She lit some scented candles and snuggled into bed with her stuffed toy, feeling a bit dazed. Her phone buzzed incessantly, displaying a flood of messages.
Zheng Mengni was known for her warmth and generosity. At school, she held multiple positions, including the head of the organizing department, class monitor, and representative for the analytical geometry class. As Wei Jingxi would say, she had an endless supply of energy and an insatiable desire for responsibility.
With so many friends, she spent half the day scrolling through messages without making a dent in them. After some thought, she added Wei Jingxi to her pinned contacts.
Wei Jingxi: "I'll take you to school tomorrow morning. No need to bring breakfast."
Zheng Mengni replied briefly before exiting the class group chat to upload the seating chart for tomorrow's lecture and post an announcement. She then responded to each message from her classmates.
Once she finished handling school matters, she stared at the icon of a social app, feeling lost in thought. If Wei Jingxi could discover her secret of hiring a substitute singer, would others also find out and come to criticize her privately?
After hesitating for a long time, Zheng Mengni opened her private messages. A familiar profile picture caught her eye—pure black with no other designs.
"When are you releasing a song? I want to hear it."
Zheng Mengni felt a headache coming on. This was the only online friend she had ever chatted with. From the very beginning, when she had only a few fans, he had already started following her and would send her encouragement every day to boost her popularity.
Back then, Zheng Mengni hadn't hired anyone yet; she had only released a very simple song. Even though there were parts where she was off-key, post-production made it sound decent enough.
Zheng Mengni knew she lacked talent; no matter how hard she tried to sing, she couldn't attract many fans. After six months with only a handful of followers, she foolishly decided to hire someone whose voice was similar to hers.
Looking at this initial fan, Zheng Mengni felt a wave of emotions. She explained that her studies were currently demanding and that whether or not she could release songs depended on her future availability.
"I see. Well, focus on your studies then. If it's convenient, can we connect? 🌹🌹"
Zheng Mengni sent over her contact information, and soon after, she received a friend request in her contacts list from the black profile picture.
After passing, the other party did not send any messages. Zheng Mengni put her phone aside to charge, turned off the lights, and buried herself under the covers to sleep.
She was used to going to bed early, but the events of the day kept her tossing and turning, unable to find rest. Zheng Mengni felt scared, afraid that when she woke up, her parents would be there with a paternity test in hand, questioning her.
That night, her heart raced as she lay awake, not knowing how long it took before she finally fell into a light sleep.
The next morning, Zheng Mengni awoke from a nightmare, sitting on the edge of her bed, unable to gather her thoughts. In her dream, her identity had been exposed, and she was driven out of the Zheng family. On her way to school, someone had posted about her cheating on an exam.
Hugging her knees, she buried her face in them and cried quietly, softly reassuring herself: "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid. They love you so much; how could they ever drive you away?"
