In the following days, Mo Xuan spent most of his time in his room as usual. He would either browse the internet, gently gliding his fingers over the mouse; or immerse himself in a book, occasionally pushing up his glasses; or focus intently on playing his NDSi, fingers rapidly tapping the buttons; or play chess against himself, eyes fixed on the board as the pieces clicked crisply when placed down; or meticulously build a "Candy Fortress" with candies, a childlike smile gracing his face; or curl up in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought. Occasionally, he would leave his rented room to distribute flyers, waving his arms amidst the crowd; deliver food, hurriedly weaving through the streets; sing at a bar, pouring his heart into the songs; or drive a taxi, hands gripping the steering wheel as he kept his eyes on the road ahead.
As for Yu Xunyu, she quietly read books and watched television every day in her room. Sometimes she would sit at her computer, eyes glued to the screen as she browsed news online, but she rarely ventured outside, her presence in the room appearing somewhat lonely. The two would greet each other when they met, sharing faint smiles, but their actual conversations were minimal—just a few simple pleasantries before retreating to their respective rooms.
Until the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, when Yu Xunyu gently knocked on Mo Xuan's door. After he responded, she pushed open the door with an expectant smile and said to him:
"Murong Moxuan, it's Mid-Autumn Festival today. Let's go out for dinner; it's my treat."
"Sure." Without a second thought, Mo Xuan agreed and sat up from his bed, stretching lazily. Yu Xunyu smiled to herself, thinking that he wasn't too difficult to get along with; he was just a bit reclusive.
Just as they were about to head out, there was a sudden knock at the door. Yu Xunyu quickly walked over and opened it to find a man in his early thirties standing outside. He wore a designer shirt and slacks, adorned with a purple striped tie, looking very neat and tidy. However, there was an air of unease about him; his gaze was wandering and somewhat hesitant, which contrasted sharply with his polished appearance.
"Hello, may I ask if you are..." Yu Xunyu tilted her head slightly in confusion.
The man glanced at Yu Xunyu and then at Mo Xuan before swallowing hard. His Adam's apple bobbed as he tentatively asked, "Is this 'Yu Xunyu Detective Agency'?"
"Ah?" Yu Xunyu exclaimed softly, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she said eagerly, "Are you looking to hire 'Yu Xunyu Detective Agency' for an investigation?"
The man nodded seriously, his expression turning grave.
Yu Xunyu steadied herself with a deep breath, her demeanor softening as she smiled gently. "Hello, I am Yu Xunyu, the chairman and head of 'Yu Xunyu Detective Agency.' This is my assistant Murong Moxuan." She paused briefly before continuing, "Let me take a guess at what you need us to investigate. You look troubled and furrowed your brow—clearly something weighs on your mind. A man's worries usually stem from two things: money or women. You’re dressed in designer clothes and appear to be quite successful; it’s evident that money isn’t your concern. Therefore, you must be troubled by a woman. Are you suspecting your wife of infidelity? Don’t worry; investigating extramarital affairs is one of my specialties..."
Hearing this, the man forced a smile and couldn’t help but interrupt Yu Xunyu: "Sorry to interrupt you there... umm, I’m not married and I don’t have a girlfriend."
Yu Xunyu abruptly stopped, her face alternating between pale and flushed, clearly feeling quite embarrassed. Mo Xuan glanced at the man, his brows slightly furrowed, a hint of confusion flickering in his eyes as he pondered.
After the man entered the room, he sat down on a chair in the hall, his movements somewhat stiff. While handing his business card to Mo Xuan and Yu Xunyu, he methodically explained the reason for his visit: "Miss Yu, Mr. Murong, hello. My surname is Zong, given name Ze. I am not yet married and work at an advertising company, leading a stable and comfortable life. However, this morning I received a rather strange text message on my phone. The content of that message was so peculiar that I couldn't tell if it was a prank. Coincidentally, I saw your firm's advertisement on a certain forum online yesterday, so I took the liberty to come here and ask for your help in investigating this odd text message."
The man named Zong Ze spoke clearly and coherently, his tone almost monotone and calm. Yet he never mentioned what the strange text message actually contained. After a brief pause in his speech, Yu Xunyu picked up where he left off: "Let's take a look at the content of that text message."
Zong Ze nodded and pulled out his phone from his pocket. He tapped on the screen a few times to open his inbox and then handed the phone to Yu Xunyu.
Yu Xunyu took the phone, and Mo Xuan leaned in closer. As they both looked at the screen, they saw that the so-called strange text message read:
