The green shoots were blown into the room by the wind seeping through the crack of the door. Everyone inside froze in that moment, unsure whether the wind was eager to witness this drama or if the green shoots were trying to prove that they had never abandoned this home. The few green shoots swayed gently in the breeze, appearing particularly desolate. 0

The father and daughter stood before Mother's lifeless body, unwilling to report the incident, with the intention of having Mother perform one last task for the family. Their eyes revealed a hint of greed and helplessness. 0

“If this isn’t done by you, then it will be done by me,” Father said, referring to the act of killing Mother. He continued, “I bought an accidental death insurance policy for your mother today, with a coverage amount of one million. I want to trade her life for money. I’ve been tormented by your Mother to the point of becoming a cripple; I don’t care. But doing this would at least spare you from scorn, allow you to wear designer brands, and let you live a good life.” 0

After speaking, a complex emotion lingered between his brows, as if he had more to say but was holding back. His brow furrowed slightly, and his gaze flickered uncertainly. 0

“Dad, you’re my only family now. I’ll listen to whatever you say.” 0

Even if Mother were alive, I would still lean towards Father. Some say that a daughter was her father’s lover in a past life; it seems there’s some truth to that. I looked at Father, my eyes filled with a hint of dependence. 0

“The most troublesome issue now is that the insurance I bought doesn’t take effect until tomorrow, and your mother died today. We won’t get a penny.” Father inserted two fingers into his hair, tugging at the roots with urgency and helplessness etched on his face. 0

In one day, I had orchestrated two tragedies. This time, I killed the right person at the wrong time, but it was a tragedy nonetheless. I forced a bitter smile as tears welled up in my eyes. 0

“There’s only one way!” Father suddenly lifted his head, seeking my response with a gaze that revealed a hint of madness and determination. 0

“What way?” Naturally, I wanted to salvage that million-dollar insurance payout. My eyes were fixed on Father, filled with anticipation. 0

“Make your Mother die one day later.” 0

Upon hearing this, a cold sweat trickled from my armpit down to my waist. I couldn’t help but shiver as a chill surged through me. 0

To delay death by a day. 0

In the Intensive Care Unit for the Vegetative State, this might be possible. But to do the same in the Morgue? That was impossible. I stared wide-eyed at Father, my face a mix of terror and confusion. 0

"But Mom is already dead!" I couldn't help but ask, my voice trembling slightly. 0

"There’s a saying: 'to die and be reborn,' which applies to our current situation. I've already thought of a way. Tomorrow, you just need to stay at school obediently." 0

Speaking of school reminded me of the principal's request for a parent meeting, and I hurriedly relayed this to Father, my voice a bit rushed. 0

To my surprise, upon hearing this, he burst into an unbelievable fit of laughter. "Heaven helps me! Heaven helps me!" 0

Father laughed so hard that his body shook, his facial muscles contorting with mirth, and there was a glint of madness in his eyes. 0

Realizing he had lost composure, Father quickly composed himself and said to me, "In that case, tomorrow I'll take your mother to meet your principal." 0

He even promised me that he would buy me a pair of Nike shoes tomorrow, his eyes revealing a hint of reassurance and anticipation. 0

I had no idea what was going through Father's mind, nor did I want to know his plans. The only comfort was that I no longer dwelled on my guilt; I just wanted to get that one hundred thousand in cash as soon as possible, my heart filled with contradictions and struggles. 0

That night, I slept particularly soundly. I no longer had to fear the midnight arguments; my body relaxed as I lay in bed and soon drifted into dreams. 0

As I said goodnight to Father, I saw him wrapping Mother's body in an electric blanket and shoving it under the bed with practiced calmness, as if he were performing an ordinary task. 0

Father sprawled across the entire bed, his arms and legs stretched out in a way that claimed every inch of space. There was no sign of the mistress of the house, and a hint of relief crossed his face. 0

It was hard to believe that someone could be so deeply hated yet so easily forgotten. I had to admit that Mother’s character was a failure, I thought to myself, my face betraying no emotion. 0

For the first time, due to death, I felt a sense of belonging to this home. This feeling was both strange and somewhat comforting. I let out a soft sigh and closed my eyes. 0
