Today there is a performance, and I must leave early tonight; otherwise, there won't be any good seats left.
Wen Qian realized that her news always came the slowest, as she often learned about things from others. But should she blame Lu Zheng for this? It was all his fault for not telling her; just look at how proactive others were.
Aunt Tian chuckled, unable to hold back her laughter. "Is it that your Lu Zheng hasn’t told you again?"
In my opinion, Lu Zheng is a good kid in every way, but he just can’t express himself well.
"Can’t express himself?" Wen Qian forced a smile. If he couldn’t talk, then who could? Ever since their relationship grew closer, Lu Zheng had become quite the chatterbox, especially in bed, where he wouldn’t stop talking and drove her crazy. She wanted to cover his mouth but found herself too weak to do so; instead, she ended up hearing him even more clearly.
Thinking about it made her cheeks flush slightly, like a hint of blush revealing her shyness.
Aunt Tian looked at her in surprise. "I must say, you’ve changed so much since you first arrived. Back then, you looked so haggard—your face was pale and thin; it was truly heartbreaking to see. Now, you look like a completely different person, with skin as smooth as a peeled egg."
"I’ve lived half my life, and I must admit I’m envious," Aunt Tian said with a smile as she touched her own face somewhat shyly.
Wen Qian lowered her head and shyly touched her own face. She had noticed the change too; it was indeed significant. At first, she hadn’t realized it because life passed day by day, and the changes in her face were gradual and subtle.
Now that she thought back to how she looked when she first arrived, the difference felt immense. It was as if she had been given a second chance at life, experiencing the kindness of this world all over again.
She looked at Aunt Tian with gratitude in her eyes. When she first arrived at the family compound, she hadn’t been very likable. It was Aunt Tian who introduced her to the other residents and helped her make new friends. Now, she could chat easily with more than half of the people in the compound.
Her days in the family compound had become joyful. For all of this, Wen Qian was extremely thankful to Aunt Tian. She felt like a guiding light that appeared at a dead end, leading her in the right direction.
When she had just been reborn, she had harbored feelings of exclusion; coming to the family compound was merely an escape from the Lu family and an attempt to provide Chen Chen with a better living environment.
She was not at all concerned about whether she could get along harmoniously with the people from the family courtyard. Now that things had turned out this way, she felt she was moving in a positive direction.
Aunt Tian taught her some knowledge she had never learned before, things her mother hadn’t had the chance to teach her. Aunt Tian looked at Wen Qian with a smile, her mouth never stopping as she spoke.
Today, there were more people than in previous movie outings, and with fewer seats available, they could only stand in the corner and listen. Wen Qian nodded with a smile.
She joked with Aunt Tian, casually asking, "Auntie, with you gone for so long, doesn’t Uncle miss you?"
"Your uncle..."
Even though she said this, Aunt Tian's face turned red, and her gaze towards Wen Qian carried a hint of reproach.
"You little brat, teasing me like that!" she exclaimed. "Your uncle is probably living quite comfortably at home by himself; he wouldn’t want me nagging him."
As she spoke, a trace of longing appeared on her face. After all, they had been together for so many years without ever being apart—except for those two times when she came to take care of her daughter-in-law during her confinement.
"Ah, that old man doesn’t even know how to take care of himself at home. Forget him; as long as I can breathe when my time comes, that’s enough," Aunt Tian said briskly, waving her hand dismissively.
Wen Qian suddenly remembered something Lin Si had mentioned—about giving Aunt Tian a surprise. Now, she wasn’t sure if it would be a surprise or a shock.
In the afternoon, when Lu Zheng arrived, Wen Qian had already occupied a spot with Aunt Tian. He smiled helplessly and ran over, noticing that quite a few people were already seated.
He found Wen Qian and said with a grin, "I didn’t expect you to come so early! I was thinking of cooking for you all first before coming!"
Wen Qian rolled her eyes at him. "You didn’t even tell me about this; it was Aunt Tian who mentioned it!"
"Are you hiding something else? Lu Zheng, you’re sleeping in the small room tonight," she whispered in his ear, too shy to say it in front of everyone.
Some people had already eaten early and come over. The atmosphere was lively; those who hadn’t secured seats stood nearby watching or grabbed a stool to sit down.
The ambiance was harmonious, without any hint of quarrels or complaints. It felt great to have such a bustling celebration during the New Year.
The program began!
The performance by the art troupe instantly heated up the venue; everyone’s spirits soared as they enjoyed the lively atmosphere. When familiar songs were sung, everyone joined in together.
The national anthem was indispensable. Everyone paused their discussions on other topics and stood up solemnly to sing for their country.
As some of the volunteers sang, tears began to fall unbidden, each drop landing heavily on everyone's hearts.
The atmosphere of the event was lively, a scene that Wen Qian and Lu Chen had never witnessed before. They were both captivated, unable to take their eyes off the vibrant energy around them. Wen Qian was surprised by how lively everyone was, especially the female volunteers, who radiated youthful exuberance; it was a beautiful sight.
Wen Qian tugged at Lu Zheng's sleeve and whispered, "Lu Zheng, why didn't you tell me about this?"
Lu Zheng smiled helplessly. "I was afraid you'd worry. I thought if I got home early, we could come together later."
That much was true. Sometimes she did get a bit anxious when faced with certain situations, but it wasn't all the time. This man had a tendency to generalize; it was really unfair!
She discreetly pinched his waist and said softly, "You’re sleeping in the small room tonight."
"No way."
His firm refusal piqued Wen Qian's curiosity about his reasoning. However, she reminded herself that being too curious could lead to social embarrassment.
Then he coldly stated, "You and Chen Chen can’t keep warm without me."
This point left Wen Qian speechless. It was true; she and Lu Chen really couldn’t keep warm together. When they slept, they curled up like two little cats, huddled together in a ball. It looked both pitiful and amusing.
"How did Lu Zheng find out?" you might ask.
That day, he had returned from a mission and discovered the mother and son sound asleep, curled up together. When he slipped into bed, it felt cold and devoid of warmth; it looked so lonely.
As soon as he got in, the two of them immediately clung to him, wrapping their arms and legs around him while giggling happily and rubbing their little faces against his arm.
In that moment, Lu Zheng felt his heart melt. He thought to himself that this was how his life should be—frozen in that moment forever.
