The next day at school, Wen Qian saw Guo Hui Mei sliding over with a shocked and gossipy expression on her face.
"Wen Qian, do you know what happened yesterday? You would never guess."
Wen Qian immediately thought of Guan Nian Er and that man, but she wasn't sure if that was what Guo Hui Mei was referring to.
Guo Hui Mei leaned in mysteriously, her eyes wide with disbelief yet somehow expecting. "Guan Nian Er was actually caught having an affair with the principal's son in the principal's office! You have no idea how explosive this is!"
Wen Qian looked at her in surprise. "How did you find out about this?"
"Someone came back to school last night to grab something and just happened to see it. By today, the news has spread like wildfire. You wouldn’t believe how lively the school is right now; parents are crowding into the principal's office demanding answers! They’re saying our school is improper, and how could the teachers dare to do such things on campus? Don’t they fear corrupting the children?"
Wen Qian nodded.
"But there’s another way to look at this," she continued. "Both Guan Nian Er and the principal's son are unmarried. They could be considered a couple, and maybe they were just overwhelmed by their feelings. Although it’s not a good reputation, at least their lives are safe, and they won’t be dealt with harshly."
However, Guan Nian Er could no longer think about staying in the military; it would inevitably affect her career as a teacher, and it needed to be handled seriously.
Suddenly, the door burst open, and Guan Nian Er rushed in, disheveled and furious as she yelled at Wen Qian.
"Wen Qian! Did you tell someone? How else would they know so clearly? I knew you’ve never liked me; you’re just so eager to get back at me!"
Seeing her frantic state made Wen Qian want to laugh despite the situation. She stood up, half-explaining and half-pitying her.
"This isn’t my doing; you saw I just got to school! And Guan Nian Er, who do you think you are? Do you really think I’d resort to such childish tactics against you? If your mind is troubled, don’t blame me for your choices. I didn’t force you to be with that man; don’t come here slandering me!"
"You... you! Wen Qian, you’re just a despicable person!"
Although Guan Nian Er still felt confused inside, she began to understand that this might not have been Wen Qian’s fault. During their time together, she hadn’t gotten to know Wen Qian well, but she had an idea of her character.
Fuming, Guan Nian Er stormed out of the room but couldn’t help but cry as she walked away.
Why was everything so difficult for her? All she wanted was a simple life, yet everything had turned upside down.
Meanwhile, parents in the principal's office were driving Principal Shen nearly mad with their demands. She could only shout back promises to address their concerns seriously and swiftly.
By that morning, Guan Nian Er returned to her village; Principal Shen had dismissed her from her position.
She left without knowing who had spread the rumors. Who wanted to ruin her?
When Principal Shen's son left, he smiled at Wen Qian, his smirk filled with a sense of determination. However, when Wen Qian looked at his pretentious demeanor, she knew he was not as capable as he thought. Without Lu Zheng, she could handle him on her own.
That afternoon, after school, he began to take action. Wen Qian still had to clean up after classes. The office cleaning duties rotated every two days, sometimes even weekly. While she was sweeping the floor, she sensed someone approaching from behind. Standing straight, she turned to see a man looming behind her.
The man looked at Wen Qian with a smug expression, slicking back his greasy hair as he chuckled, "Teacher Wen, I didn't expect you to be so jealous. You can't even wait for me; you must really like me. I wouldn't mind pampering you a bit."
He advanced step by step toward her, watching her with excitement. Disgusted and helpless, Wen Qian rolled up the broom and swung it at him. Was this guy out of his mind?
The man grabbed the broom, trying to wrest it away while grinning at her, mocking her for underestimating herself. But no matter how hard he tried, the broom wouldn’t budge; instead, Wen Qian yanked it free with ease.
Her pupils widened in shock! She smiled at the man through gritted teeth, her movements swift and decisive. With a whoosh of wind, the broom came crashing down on him repeatedly. He stumbled and flailed about, wanting to escape but feeling trapped.
Lu Chen was outside, doing his part by closing the door behind him and standing guard. He would come out once the chaos settled.
With a loud thud, the man fell to the ground. Wen Qian dusted off her hands and picked up her trash before slinging her backpack over her shoulder and walking out. She pulled Lu Chen along as they headed outside the school. The man probably wouldn’t bother her again.
But as the saying goes, when a man needs to be dealt with, he must be dealt with decisively.
When she got home, she told Lu Zheng about what happened. Seeing the dark expression on his face as he nodded in understanding assured her that everything was settled. Although she didn’t want to complicate matters further, it was better to eliminate troublemakers once and for all.
The next day at school, she heard new gossip circulating about Principal Shen. He had been taken away by military personnel along with his son. By afternoon, news broke that Principal Shen had been dismissed from his position. It turned out that he had taken advantage of his status and had been found out by the military.
This time, the punishment for both mother and son would not be light. Those who abused their power to do wrong would face consequences.
At noon, Wen Qian expressed her gratitude to Lu Zheng, saying, "Thank you for today."
"It's nothing; it's what I should do," he replied modestly. Then, leaning closer as if to charm her, he whispered, seeking a reward.
"If you really want to thank me, do it tonight!"
"Are you feeling better? Do you need more medicine?"
It had been several days since he had last enjoyed a proper meal, let alone meat.
Wen Qian's face flushed as she hurriedly pushed him away, giving him a reproachful glance and shaking her head apologetically.
"No, I'm fine."
"Then make dinner early today; you can't let it affect your classes tomorrow."
Lu Zheng's eyes lit up at her words, and he eagerly nodded in response. "I'll make dinner early so you can eat when you get back from class."
The man smiled broadly, but Wen Qian shot him a warning look, urging him to tone it down.
To her surprise, he only grew more pleased with himself, grinning even wider.
That evening, Lu Zheng finally enjoyed a hearty meal of meat. As he watched Wen Qian fall asleep from exhaustion, he leaned in to kiss her softly a few times.
Feeling satisfied, he held her close and snuggled against her before changing the sheets and giving her a gentle wash. After taking a shower himself, he returned to embrace her contentedly.
He knew that opportunities like this would become scarce in the future. As the weather grew colder, his troublesome son would surely move back in, and that would mark the beginning of his neglected phase.
Thus, he felt it was essential to make up for everything now.
Lu Zheng smiled as he looked at the little person in his arms, joy lighting up his face as he couldn't help but lean in for a few more kisses.
He was truly happy—this life brought him great satisfaction and joy.
