As soon as he reached the bedside, a pillow was thrown at him.
Lu Zheng chuckled softly, raising his hand to catch it and holding it close. He walked over slowly and sat at the edge of the bed, looking at the woman buried under the covers.
"Are you hungry?"
When the person in the blanket didn’t respond, he shook his head with a helpless smile and lifted the corner of the blanket, pulling it back forcefully.
This revealed a woman with a flushed face, who glared at him with shimmering eyes, clutching the blanket tightly around herself.
Lu Zheng leaned slightly closer, propping himself up on her, helping to smooth her hair before leaning in to plant a gentle kiss on her forehead. He continued to ask, "Are you hungry? Do you want to get up and eat something?"
Wen Qian didn’t say anything, but her stomach gave a loud rumble that provided him with a clear answer. Her face turned even redder as she covered her belly with one hand and playfully pushed against him with the other.
Little did she know, she had fallen right into his trap. He grasped her hand firmly and pulled her into his embrace, leaning down to kiss her hair while holding her hand and asking again, "Are you tired?"
"Shut up! I don’t want to hear you talk right now."
Wen Qian's hoarse voice rang out, and as it reached his ears, she angrily punched him. In that moment, she forgot to hold back her strength and ended up hitting him hard enough that he let out a muffled grunt of pain.
Lu Zheng pressed her hand against the spot where she had hit him, looking pitiful as he complained, "You hit too hard! Rub it for me."
Although Wen Qian felt a pang of guilt inside, seeing his pitiful expression only fueled her anger further. This man had been acting strangely ever since last night, as if he had broken free from some kind of shackles.
He had gone from being stoic and wooden to suddenly becoming quite different. There was an indescribable feeling about it, as if he had transformed into another person altogether. He could now speak in ways that made her cheeks flush with embarrassment.
She smacked him lightly and scolded, "Stop pretending."
Lu Zheng ruffled her hair playfully. "I’ll get you some hot food; you better get ready to eat or I’ll just bring it over for you."
Wen Qian shook her head and said softly, feeling shy, "I’ll get up to eat; just don’t bring it in here."
She didn’t like eating in the room because it would leave a lingering smell of food that wasn’t pleasant.
Lu Zheng nodded and stepped outside to heat up the food.
Wen Qian continued lying on the bed, shifting her arms to rub her sore waist. Last night, his hands had pressed down on her so firmly that sometimes it hurt; she even wondered if her waist was bruised.
She quietly lifted the blanket to take a peek and noticed there was indeed some redness there. Her face flushed again.
It felt different this time around.
Slowly shifting her body, she sat up and felt a slight pain in her backside, but it was bearable. She picked up the clothes that had been set aside and slowly put them on. Every movement of her legs sent a twinge of discomfort through her, yet it was manageable.
This little pain was somewhat annoying, but compared to the beatings she had endured in the past, it was nothing!
As she finished dressing and stepped outside, her legs felt a bit weak, but otherwise, she was fine. Her body had mostly healed; if it were any other woman, she would still be lying in bed unable to move.
She gradually made her way to the living room and then outside to the restroom. After washing up, she sat at the table waiting for Lu Zheng to bring out the food.
She didn’t want to move! The only reason she was in this situation was because of him; he should do more, contribute more, and take care of her.
Lu Zheng brought the food to the table and sat across from her, watching her intently.
“Go ahead and eat!”
Wen Qian picked up her chopsticks and began to eat slowly. Lu Zheng moved closer and sat beside her, softly asking, “Does your waist hurt?”
“A bit!”
Lu Zheng secretly chuckled to himself; she was just being stubborn. Yet he instinctively leaned over to help massage her back.
Wen Qian went from being tense at first to gradually relaxing and enjoying it. His strong hands felt good as they kneaded her back. Such treatment was too good to pass up.
After finishing her meal, Wen Qian headed straight back to her room for a nap. She hadn’t slept well the night before.
Meanwhile, Lu Zheng left for the military base to take care of some matters.
Jiang Qing approached him and asked, “Have you seen Liu Heng? I haven’t seen him all morning, and I need to find him.”
Lu Zheng frowned and shook his head. “I don’t know; why don’t you ask where he is?”
After a while, Jiang Qing returned with a smile that he couldn’t hide. “You won’t believe this—Liu Heng took leave to go home! He didn’t get permission and ended up crying in the office, complaining about it to Wen Wei.”
He recalled how when he first arrived at the office, a comrade had told him what he had witnessed. Liu Heng, a grown man, was sitting on the floor hugging Wen Wei’s legs and crying, even shedding a couple of tears like a cat.
“Wen Wei! This is my one chance at love! If you don’t let me go home, I won’t be able to find a wife! If I can’t find a wife, I might as well not live anymore!”
“Please! Just for my sake, let me go home! I need to see my parents; otherwise my future wife won’t agree! I’m going crazy here!”
As he spoke, he looked at Wen Wei with an expression of grievance, perfectly timed with two tears rolling down his cheeks. It seemed he was about to wipe his tears and snot on Wen Wei’s pants.
Wen Wei quickly called out to stop him, "Hey, keep your distance from me. You're free to go back now."
He pointed at Liu Heng with a laugh and scolded, "You little rascal, you really can’t take a joke. Acting like that is just embarrassing. If anyone finds out, I’d be ashamed to say you’re my soldier."
Liu Heng got Wen Wei to sign a leave slip and dashed away in a hurry.
Lian didn’t argue back even after being scolded. He was nearly beside himself with worry. You wouldn’t know it from his expression, but he was fuming inside when Liu Heng was mentioned.
Jiang Qing rarely found amusement in others' misfortunes, but Liu Heng had been acting strangely lately, constantly at odds with him. Although it was trivial, the frequency of their clashes made things increasingly uncomfortable. He didn’t really care to know why, but having someone like that around was still quite interesting.
Seeing Liu Heng in a predicament naturally brought Jiang Qing some joy, and he couldn’t help but want to spread the word about it.
Lu Zheng kept his head down, busy handling matters and only grunted a few times in response. He needed to finish up quickly so he could return home to accompany his wife. For now, he didn’t have to worry about training; there were only these paperwork issues to deal with.
Once he wrapped everything up, he glanced at the time and hurried home to prepare dinner.
Jiang Qing watched the man’s hurried retreat from the office, raising an eyebrow in surprise. Curiosity piqued within him. What could possibly be so urgent?
As the saying goes, a bachelor doesn’t understand the warmth of a wife and children.
When Lu Zheng returned home, Wen Qian was still asleep. He quietly slipped out of the room, realizing that last night had indeed been quite exhausting for her. He would definitely need to be more mindful and shorten those late nights in the future.
But how could he stop such things?
Lu Zheng shook his head with a wry smile as he headed into the kitchen to cook.
