The gentle breeze brushed against Li Huimei's bangs, causing her to instinctively close her eyes for a moment. She then raised her hand to tuck her hair behind her ear.
Liu Heng watched her nervously, noticing a stray strand of hair at her temple. He reached out gently to help her tuck it behind her ear.
Li Huimei instinctively shrank back slightly, looking at the strangely behaving Liu Heng with confusion.
"What's wrong with you? You seem off. If there's something on your mind, just say it! It's not like I won't listen."
Liu Heng took a deep breath, straightened up, and smoothed his clothes before saluting her.
"Comrade Li Huimei, my name is Liu Heng. I am twenty-three years old and serve as a squad leader. My parents live in the city, and I am their only child. I have a cheerful personality and no bad habits."
"Hmm?"
Li Huimei felt that the man in front of her was even stranger now. Why was he saying all this? It felt like a blind date.
Wait a minute… a blind date? Could it be that he… liked her?
Liu Heng nervously bit his tongue and continued, "I want to pursue a relationship with you, with marriage as the goal. As they say, pursuing a relationship without the intention of marriage is just fooling around."
"Do you… do you agree?"
He uttered this line without daring to look at Li Huimei's expression or gaze.
At that moment, Li Huimei was experiencing a whirlwind of thoughts; she truly hadn’t expected Liu Heng to have feelings for her.
Not at all.
Yet, there was a flutter of excitement within her. This was the first time someone liked her so openly!
In the past, many men had shown interest in her because of her looks, but they eventually gave up or stepped back due to her reputation.
Each time left her feeling slightly defeated, but deep down, she knew they weren't suitable matches for her.
Liu Heng didn’t hear a response and couldn’t help but glance back at her anxiously, his brow furrowed with worry and uncertainty.
Seeing Li Huimei lower her head in silence made him even more anxious.
He couldn’t help but whisper, "Comrade Li Huimei, do you agree?"
"Huh? What?"
Li Huimei looked at him as if she had just been jolted awake, confused and dazed.
Liu Heng felt like he might cry from frustration; it had taken him so much courage to say those words, and she hadn’t even heard him.
Li Huimei came back to her senses and realized she had just acted foolishly. She looked at Liu Heng apologetically and whispered, "I heard everything you just said. Are you serious?"
"Of course I'm serious. More serious than anything," Liu Heng replied hurriedly, stepping closer.
However, Li Huimei still felt hesitant inside. She nervously clutched the cloth bag in her hands, took a few deep breaths, and mustered the courage to look at the man before her.
Seeing his reddened eyes made her instinctively shrink back, increasing her anxiety. "Do you know my reputation? It's not good. If you don't know, you might want to ask around first. I'm afraid you’ll regret it."
At that moment, Liu Heng couldn't care about anything else. The tremor in her voice made him unable to hold back any longer. He stepped forward and took her hand, leading her into the alley.
Once they stopped, he held her hand tightly and leaned down urgently to respond, "I know everything. I found out about you the day after we met. You have no idea how happy I was when I learned you were single."
"I don't care about that at all. That’s not you; it’s others trying to tarnish your name. I’m here for you as a person."
"Huimei, I like you for who you are—your personality, your lively spirit, your smile, every little thing you do. I like you, Li Huimei."
"So, will you be with me?"
His hoarse voice echoed in her ears and resonated in her heart.
Li Huimei felt deeply moved but reminded herself that she was not him; she had her own plans and considerations. She suppressed the smile that had crept onto her lips and looked seriously at the eager man before her. "Liu Heng, our differences are too great. Even if you say this is for marriage, will your family really agree?"
"Don’t worry about my reputation; what about your family? Maybe we’re just not suitable for each other!"
Many decent men had shown interest in her before, but their families never approved of her because of her reputation and background as someone from the countryside—they deemed her unworthy of their sons.
She had tried hard but always ended up failing!
Her nonchalant attitude towards this matter was actually a way to shield herself from further heartbreak. The feeling of giving your all only to be cast aside was truly painful; she didn’t have the courage to try again.
She attempted to pull her hand away from Liu Heng's grasp, but he held on tightly, increasing his grip and refusing to let go.
Liu Heng felt rejected and panic welled up in his eyes as tears threatened to spill over. He bent down to look at Li Huimei's expression, his voice cracking with emotion as he said, "My parents will definitely like you; they don’t care about those things! They support me wholeheartedly! If I like someone, they’ll surely like them too."
"Huimei, please don’t treat me this way! I would never lie to you; everything I said is true."
"I'll let my parents meet you tomorrow; they will definitely like you a lot."
In that moment, when Li Kuimei looked up at Liu Heng, her heart softened. He was on the verge of tears! He gazed at her with a pitiful expression, as if he had lost something dear to him.
"Don't like Jiang Qing; like me instead. I’m not bad-looking, just a bit darker than him. I promise to take care of my face from now on; it will improve soon."
He noticed the woman in front of him was moved. Her eyes flickered, and then she closed them, tears streaming down her cheeks as she looked at him with those pleading dog-like eyes.
"I really won't lie to you. I'll show you; just trust me. If you're still worried, I'll file for a marriage license tomorrow. I’ll marry you."
The crystalline tears glistened in the sunlight, making them even more striking. Li Kuimei blinked rapidly. She quickly raised her hand to cover the man's mouth, not allowing him to continue speaking. She was afraid that if he kept talking, she might end up having his child. After all, she was still an innocent girl!
"Let me think about it; I’ll tell you later."
Seeing his earnestness, she couldn't help but soften her heart. Even if he was pretending, she would accept it.
Liu Heng nodded eagerly, obediently gazing at her with those big eyes.
When Li Kuimei noticed his silence, she realized her hand was still covering his mouth. She hurriedly moved it away and hid it behind her back. With her other hand, she initially struggled to pull away from his grip, but eventually, as he loosened his hold slightly, she managed to free herself.
"I... I’ll head home first."
"I'll go back with you."
Liu Heng closely followed Li Kuimei, adopting a protective stance. The distance between them was neither too far nor too close—enough to avoid gossip but not so far as to feel like strangers.
"Aren't you supposed to handle some matters?"
Faced with Li Kuimei's curious gaze, Liu Heng scratched his head awkwardly and lowered his eyes, biting his lip as he said, "I came here on purpose to find you. I heard you were going on a blind date today and was worried you'd be alone."
Li Kuimei looked at him deeply for a moment before turning around. A smile crept onto her lips that she couldn't suppress, and the joy in her eyes seemed ready to overflow.
