After sitting down, Liu Heng curiously asked her, "Aren't you afraid that man might really come after you without caring about anything?"
"Of course I'm scared. How could I not be?" Li Kuimei took a sip of water, feeling as if she had come back to life.
She took a few deep breaths and smiled at Liu Heng. "I saw you coming long before, so I felt reassured enough to act that way."
Usually, I just curse a few times and leave, but today was the first time I felt so liberated. It was exhilarating.
She laughed joyfully and excitedly patted Liu Heng on the back.
"Oh, and I haven't even thanked you yet!"
Liu Heng chuckled, both amused and helpless. "How can you be so sure that I would help you?"
"I believe in you! You're not that kind of person. Besides, you're in the army; you definitely wouldn't stand by and watch me get bullied."
Li Kuimei spoke confidently, completely winning over Liu Heng.
She sat down again and bought a bowl of rice from the staff to start eating.
Wen Qian raised an eyebrow at her, her eyes sparkling with laughter. "How are you going to explain this to your mom when you get home?"
That hit a sore spot.
Li Kuimei looked at Wen Qian with a mournful expression and couldn't help but complain, "Wen Qian, can you please stop hurting me? When I get home, my mom is definitely going to scold me again."
It seemed she had been through some tough times; even her appetite was gone as she rested her chin on her hand in frustration.
She could already imagine how that man would judge her.
Every time I go on a blind date and come home, my mom scolds me and lectures me, telling me that if I eat more and talk less during dates, I'll find someone.
But the ones she finds for me are never to my liking.
With a look of deep grievance, one might think she had suffered some great injustice!
Liu Heng chuckled and handed her a pair of chopsticks to pick up some food, signaling her to eat.
"Eat up! If you don't hurry, Chen Chen will finish it all!"
Lu Chen raised his innocent little face, looking confused at him.
Li Kuimei's appetite returned as she angrily picked up her chopsticks and started eating.
Lu Zheng and Wen Qian exchanged smiles and began eating as well.
The food had gotten a bit cold; they had been too engrossed in watching the show to eat earlier.
Li Kuimei looked at Lu Zheng's arm and asked, "Wen Qian, how's your husband's arm?"
"Well, it's not fully healed yet. The doctor said he needs to rest it for now and recover slowly."
"Okay then."
Feeling ignored, Liu Heng was not pleased. He tapped the table and looked at Li Kuimei.
"Why don't you ask me? I just helped you!"
"Alright then, let me give you some meat."
She picked up a piece of meat and placed it in his bowl, watching him in a daze as she gestured for him to eat.
Liu Heng smiled at the meat in his bowl before looking back at Li Kuimei with amusement.
He slowly picked up the food and brought it to his mouth, savoring each bite. Although it was the same meat, he felt that this one tasted different, giving him a unique sensation with every chew. Li Huimei didn’t notice anything unusual; she only found his gaze a bit strange, as if his eyes were twitching.
"You’ve been following me all this way. What are you doing in the city?" she asked Liu Heng curiously.
This morning, before they even reached the city, she had spotted Liu Heng's figure and thought it was just a coincidence. Little did she know, he had been trailing behind her the entire time. Whenever she walked, he walked; when she paused, so did he.
Eventually, they arrived at the state-run hotel, and during their meal, she noticed Liu Heng keeping a distance that was neither too far nor too close. She still thought it was just a coincidence.
Liu Heng awkwardly picked at his food and mumbled, "I came here for something. I hadn’t eaten since I arrived and went straight to the hotel. I figured you would be here too."
That explanation seemed reasonable enough. After all, they were almost at the hotel when he arrived, so it made sense for him to eat there as well. However, this answer slightly crushed the budding feelings in Li Huimei’s heart. She smiled and chose not to speak further, continuing to eat.
After finishing their meal, Li Huimei announced that she was leaving. She picked up her basket and walked toward the exit, casually placing her ration tickets and money next to her bowl as she left.
Once she was gone, the others remained seated at the table. Liu Heng appeared somewhat distracted as he stared at the scene before him. Lu Zheng glanced at Wen Qian and Lu Chen before calling out to Liu Heng.
"If you like her, go after her. Don’t wait until it’s too late to regret it. Don’t be like me—only chasing after what you want after regretting it!"
"Lu Ge, I—"
Lu Zheng chuckled and shook his head. "Your feelings are written all over your face; I can see them clearly. What I want to tell you is that if you like someone, you need to act quickly; otherwise, they might belong to someone else in the next moment. Besides, she does have feelings for you."
Liu Heng didn’t believe him at first but then glanced over at Wen Qian. When he saw her nodding with a smile, he took off running toward the exit.
His mind was consumed by Lu Zheng's words: "She does have feelings for you." Did that mean Huimei liked him too? More than she liked Jiang Qing?
Wen Qian turned back with a smile and looked at Lu Zheng. "What’s gotten into you? This isn’t like you!"
The expression on her face was too obvious for Lu Zheng to misunderstand her teasing. He reached out and took her small hand, slowly enveloping it in his palm, smiling as he said, "I’ve made mistakes before, and I don’t want others to make the same ones. If I can correct one, that’s enough."
It was a way for him to gradually mend the piece of his heart that felt incomplete—the part filled with apologies and regrets.
He looked at the woman before him, gently caressing her hand. She had changed quite a bit and appeared much younger, radiating vitality. She wore a blue shirt and black pants. The blue suited her perfectly, making her look even fairer and more spirited.
Since cutting her hair short and taking good care of herself, along with a better diet and improved mood, her hair was no longer the dry, waxy yellow it once was; it had transformed into a rich brown. The brown hair seemed to enhance her youthful energy even more.
The calluses on her hands had diminished significantly; her fingers were no longer thick with rough joints and heavy calluses. Gradually, her fingers had become slender, and the skin on them was smoothing out, leaving only a few stubborn calluses behind.
As she was about to leave, Wen Qian inadvertently glanced back at the money and tickets on the table. She picked them up and immediately recognized that they were left by Li Huimei. That little girl was truly too considerate.
Meanwhile, Li Huimei was walking at a steady pace when Liu Heng finally caught up with her after running for a while.
"Li Huimei, wait! I need to talk to you," Liu Heng said breathlessly as he stopped, looking seriously at the woman in front of him.
Li Huimei looked puzzled. "What’s wrong? Why are you in such a hurry? If you have something to say, why didn’t you mention it earlier or wait until next time?"
Though she didn’t understand, she obediently stood there waiting for Liu Heng to speak.
Taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down, Liu Heng pulled Li Huimei aside and looked at her earnestly and seriously.
