"Teacher Guan, she said my writing is unfair."
Wen Qian felt her blood pressure rise instantly.
For first graders who have just begun to engage with textbooks and writing tools, being able to write at all is already quite impressive. Yet, here she was, nitpicking over trivial matters.
She gently patted Lu Chen's head, comforting him. "Chen Chen did nothing wrong. I'll talk to your teacher tomorrow."
Throughout the day, Guan Nian'er had made subtle jabs at her and Ke Huimei multiple times. Wen Qian had responded directly each time; it was clear there was some unpleasantness between them. However, she never expected her to target a child.
Lu Zheng also frowned and clearly stated that he would accompany her to the school. Nowadays, children are particularly sensitive about their image; it's crucial to establish their values and attitudes early on. If they start off on the wrong foot now, it would be difficult to correct later.
That night, as she was getting ready for bed, Wen Qian noticed that the vacant room next door had been opened. She walked in to check it out and found that everything had been cleared out except for a sewing machine.
Curious, she asked Lu Zheng, "What do you need this room for?"
"Chen Chen is getting older; he should start sleeping on his own. He can't keep clinging to us," he replied. It seemed he anticipated her objection and added, "It's not convenient for him to sleep with us."
"What do you mean by 'not convenient'?" They exchanged knowing glances.
Wen Qian felt a bit embarrassed by this implication. She cleared her throat and said lightly, "You must get Chen Chen's consent; otherwise, I won't agree."
It was as if the man had been waiting for her to say that; he quickly nodded in agreement, his eagerness making Wen Qian feel somewhat tricked.
"Wenwen, how do you think I did today?"
Ke Huimei twirled around happily yet shyly before looking excitedly at Lu Wenwen.
Lu Wenwen nodded. "You looked great."
"Right? I specially rushed to make this fabric after I got home yesterday."
"My mother would rather smash the sewing machine than let me not wear it or end up unmarried."
At this point, Ke Huimei became quite upset and plopped down onto a chair, shaking her head helplessly.
"Alright, we still have some time before it starts. Sister Wen Qian said we could stay at her place for a while; let’s go!"
After they left, Ke Huimei suddenly remembered something and tugged at Lu Wenwen. "Wait! I need to tell you something that made me furious."
Seeing her puffed-up face made Lu Wenwen chuckle as she nodded in agreement.
"Come on in! You guys are here quite early."
"Sister Wen Qian!"
Once inside, Ke Huimei stood up and animatedly recounted what had happened that morning.
As I stepped out in the morning, I noticed Guan Nian'er quietly following me from behind, deliberately keeping her distance. Whenever I stopped, she would halt as well; when I moved, she hurried to catch up.
I wondered if she had overheard my conversation with Wenwen yesterday and wanted to join in on the gathering. Halfway through, she even suggested that I take her along. When I entered the military compound, she was stopped at the gate and called out to me.
"What are you following me for? Don't trail behind me; seeing you is annoying."
Hao Mei glanced back at Guan Nian'er, who was closely trailing her, and directly blocked her path, frowning in irritation.
Guan Nian'er flashed a flattering smile. "Hao Mei, why not take me along? I want to see too." As she spoke, she gritted her teeth and pulled a piece of milk candy from her pocket, offering it to Hao Mei with a beaming face.
Hao Mei looked at the candy in her hand speechlessly. Did she really think of her as a three-year-old child? So easy to deceive!
"Stop following me! I don't want to take you; how annoying can you be?"
The candy was shoved back into Guan Nian'er's hand as she gritted her teeth and continued to follow.
"Hao Mei, we're from the same village! Why do you have such hostility towards me? If I'm doing well, it benefits you too; it’s good for our village, right?"
Hao Mei halted, raising an eyebrow in disbelief. "How can you be so confident? Who needs your help? As long as you don’t drag our village down, that’s enough. And stay away from my brother!"
"Don't you know how annoying it is to see you?"
When they reached the entrance of the military compound, Hao Mei smoothly walked inside while Guan Nian'er was blocked at the door.
"Why can she go in while I can't? She's not even part of the military!" Guan Nian'er shouted angrily. "If she can enter, then so can I!"
The soldier at the door waved her off, still refusing to let her in. She gritted her teeth and turned to run away.
She couldn’t believe she wouldn’t be able to get in; she would find someone to help her.
I almost thought I wouldn’t make it inside either. Thankfully, she was too timid to cause a scene here. Let her act crazy; as long as it didn’t affect us, we wouldn’t bother with her.
A troublesome opponent like a mad dog needed to be dealt with decisively—give her a memorable lesson that she wouldn’t forget or dare to ignore.
"Let’s go! Let’s go!"
As the three of us chatted and noticed the time, Lu Wenwen and Hao Mei hurriedly left. When Wen Qian saw them off on their way home, she spotted Wen Guang not far away.
It had been a while since she last saw him; suddenly seeing him made her almost unrecognizable. He had grown quite tall and looked sturdier than before.
He saw Wen Qian and suddenly walked towards her.
Lu Wenwen and Kui Huimei arrived smoothly at the venue for the gathering. It was quite charming, to say the least. Many men and women had already gathered, and the two of them slowly made their way inside. Lu Wenwen kept scanning the crowd, searching for Yang Tong's figure. Kui Huimei was captivated, unable to take her eyes off the soldiers; they all looked so good in their uniforms, each one appealing in their own way. Kui Huimei had always dreamed of marrying a soldier. As a child, her father and grandfather would tell her stories from the past, which instilled in her a deep admiration for those in uniform.
Suddenly, Lu Wenwen spotted Yang Tong in a corner. She quickly turned to Kui Huimei and said, "Huimei, you go ahead and look around by yourself. I have something to take care of."
"Sure, go ahead!" Kui Huimei waved her hand dismissively. She wasn’t afraid to be alone; she was fine with it!
Lu Wenwen took a few deep breaths to calm her nerves, then lowered her head to tug at her braid and straighten her clothes. Only then did she muster the courage to approach him slowly.
Before she could even greet him, another woman intercepted her. The woman stood just a couple of steps away, chatting closely with Yang Tong. Lu Wenwen felt a wave of shyness wash over her as she bit her lip, instinctively wanting to step back.
She observed how familiar the other woman was with Yang Tong and how animated their conversation seemed; it was almost painful to watch. Did Yang Tong like this woman? She unconsciously shifted her weight back a step, silently watching them.
A mix of envy, jealousy, and frustration flooded Lu Wenwen's mind. If only she could have acted a little faster.
