"I'll go inside and take a nap. I have class later," Wen Qian said hurriedly, almost tripping over her own feet as she rushed into the house.
The door slammed shut behind her, and she leaned against it, panting heavily, her face flushed and still in shock. She cautiously touched her lips with her hand, blinking her eyes as her cheeks grew warmer.
"Mom, is it time for school?"
Wen Qian was startled awake by her son's sleepy voice. She quickly walked over and patted him. "Chen Chen, go back to sleep. It's not time yet."
The little guy was already sleepy; he had been jolted awake but fell back into a deep slumber upon hearing Wen Qian's voice. As he drifted off, he wondered why his mother's face was so red, but ultimately, sleepiness overcame his curiosity.
Wen Qian lay by the bed, her mind racing with shock and devoid of any sleepiness. Lu Zheng kissed her! How could he have kissed her? But then again, why couldn't he kiss her?
These questions swirled endlessly in her mind.
Outside, Lu Zheng watched the fleeing figure and the closed door, a low chuckle escaping his lips. Although there hadn't been much progress, at least there was a little bit of improvement.
Wen Qian kept her eyes closed for a while before finally glancing at her watch; it was almost time. She gently shook Lu Chen awake and took him outside to wash his face.
As she opened the door, a wave of nervousness washed over her. She wasn't sure how to face Lu Zheng; it felt awkward and uncomfortable. However, when she opened the door and found no one there, she let out a sigh of relief mixed with disappointment.
After washing Lu Chen's face, the little guy looked up at Wen Qian curiously. "Mommy, where's Daddy? I remember Daddy came back! He’s back, right?"
He tugged at Wen Qian's shirt with an anxious expression.
"Yes, your daddy is back. He’s not home right now because he has something to take care of."
Though he felt a bit let down for not seeing his father when he woke up, he trusted that his mother wouldn't lie to him; Daddy was safe.
As Wen Qian stepped outside, Wen Yuanyuan ran over to grab Lu Chen's hand, excitement radiating from her. "Chen Chen! Your daddy isn't in the hospital! I asked my dad!"
"Your daddy is fine!"
Lu Chen laughed heartily and nodded as the two little ones held hands and spun around in circles. Wen Qian led them toward the school, and just as they were about to leave the military base, she spotted Lu Zheng standing at the entrance.
Lu Zheng walked over, and the two children rushed toward him, hugging his legs and sweetly calling out to him.
“Daddy, where have you been? I woke up and didn’t see you. I missed you!”
“Uncle, I’m so glad you’re okay! Yuan Yuan was so worried she almost cried!”
Lu Zheng ruffled their hair, smiling at them, but when he spoke, his gaze was directed at Wen Qian. “I had to take care of something at the base. I thought you two should be heading to school by now, so I came here to wait for you.”
“Go rest now; get some sleep. It’s getting dark,” Wen Qian said.
She had thought she wouldn’t say much, but unexpectedly, her words were filled with concern. Lu Zheng looked at her with a gentle smile, his lips curling in a satisfied grin.
“Alright, I will.”
She glanced at the man’s smile and felt a bit uncomfortable, quickly pulling the two children away.
Once they arrived at school, Wen Qian sat on a bench, and Ke Mei and Lu Wenwen quickly surrounded her.
“You scared me! As soon as we got to the base at noon, we heard someone say that Captain Lu was injured. It really shocked us, but thankfully it was just a rumor.”
At noon, Ke Mei had followed Lu Wenwen back to the infirmary and encountered quite a few people along the way.
Wen Qian smiled and asked Ke Mei, “Does your stomach still hurt?”
She waved her hand dismissively. “Not anymore! It hurt earlier! But as soon as I entered the infirmary, it stopped hurting right away. It’s so strange; if someone didn’t know better, they’d think I was possessed!”
“Ke Mei! You can’t say that!”
Ke Mei looked at Lu Wenwen’s serious expression and pouted unhappily. “I’m just telling you guys; I’m not telling anyone else.”
“If you tell us and someone else hears it, you might end up in trouble later,” Lu Wenwen explained earnestly.
At that moment, she resembled a strict teacher as she explained to Ke Mei and also addressed Wen Qian.
“Wen Qian Jie, it’s not that I’m overly sensitive; it’s just that we must be cautious. My family has always warned me not to talk about these things. If someone with bad intentions uses it against us, it could ruin our lives.”
Wen Qian nodded in understanding; this was indeed something to be careful about.
Ke Mei nodded seriously and immediately stood up straight to assure them. “I promise I’ll be careful with my words from now on; I won’t speak carelessly again.”
“How could my dad be injured? How could he possibly be hurt so badly?”
“I can still stay in the military after this, right? Why is he so weak?”
Chi Xuecha kept muttering in the car on the way to the hospital; she seemed a bit frantic.
When her mother heard her last statement, she couldn’t help but look up in shock at her daughter.
She looked at their daughter, the one whom Old Chi cherished the most, even to the point of sacrificing his son for her sake. With her eyes filled with rage, she struck Chi Xuecha across the face.
Chi Xuecha was taken aback; she never expected her mother would hit her. Turning her head, she covered her face in disbelief as she stared at this so-called mother.
"Chi Xuecha, do you even have a heart? How can you say such things about your father? You... you!"
Chi Xuecha's mother was so furious that she struggled to catch her breath, pointing an accusing finger at Chi Xuecha. She wished she could slap this ungrateful girl a few more times.
"I'll tell you, Chi Xuecha, no one in this family owes you anything! Don't come here and play the victim. It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, your father wouldn't be injured, and we wouldn't be in this situation."
Turning away, she covered her face and cried. The pride she usually held during the day had vanished, leaving only panic behind.
She felt pain for her daughter, knowing she had suffered and endured hardships. But she also felt heartache for her son and grandson! Most of all, she grieved for her husband. She wanted their family to be reunited instead of being unable to see her son or grandson, while her daughter-in-law despised them both.
Now, even Old Chi was about to leave her.
What had she done wrong that he wouldn’t help or arrange things for her? What did she expect from them? Should they just rip out their hearts for her? How could she be so heartless as to say such things?
Chi Xuecha stared in shock and sorrow at her mother's pained expression. It dawned on her that she had inadvertently spoken her innermost thoughts aloud, and her mother had heard them.
Wiping away the tears from her face, Chi Xuecha's mother fought to keep herself together. She swallowed hard and tried to make her words clear.
"Is Old Chi's injury serious? Did he come out of surgery when you left?" Her voice trembled uncontrollably at the end, and her lips quivered without her consent.
Having spent so much time in the military, she had faced many situations both big and small. Perhaps they were urgently calling family members over because they already had an estimate of Commander Chi's injuries.
Covering her trembling mouth with a hand, she closed her eyes as tears streamed down from the corners of her eyes.
Drip, drop; they fell onto the car.
