"I heard it's Lu Zheng. I heard others saw him covered in blood; it was terrifying."
"Is that true? Who in the unit doesn't know how strong Captain Lu is? He can turn into..."
Someone beside her nudged the speaker, their gaze subtly directed toward Wen Qian.
Upon seeing Wen Qian's figure, everyone hurriedly closed their mouths and fell silent.
Wen Qian's face was pale as she gripped Lu Chen and Wen Yuanyuan's hands tightly, her anxiety palpable.
"Mom, is Dad really hurt?"
Lu Chen furrowed his brows, on the verge of tears as he anxiously clutched Wen Qian's hand and asked.
Wen Yuanyuan also looked at Wen Qian with concern.
Wen Qian was pulled from her daze, staring blankly at Lu Chen, her mind a complete blank.
"Lu Zheng... did he really...?"
What about her and Chen Chen?
Wen Qian glanced at the two little ones and managed a smile, gently patting their heads. "No, Dad will definitely be fine."
Whether she said this to comfort the children or herself was uncertain.
On the way home, each step felt heavier for Wen Qian.
When they reached the front door, she paused, looking down at Lu Chen beside her. Nervously biting her lip, she clenched her other fist and took a few deep breaths.
"It might not be true; maybe when we get home, Lu Zheng will be waiting for us."
Slowly, she lifted her foot and walked toward home, a flicker of hope igniting within her.
At the door, she pushed it open but suddenly halted, breath catching in her throat as she clenched her teeth and shut her eyes.
It didn't open!
Lu Zheng hadn't returned!
So what they said must be true.
Wen Qian took out her keys to unlock the door, pulling Lu Chen inside. She opened the living room door but saw no one there either.
Pouring herself a glass of water, she gulped down two mouthfuls before collapsing onto a chair.
Lu Chen stood beside her, worry etched on his face as he bit his lip in fear and reached out to hug her neck, nestling into her embrace.
"Mom, is Dad really hurt? Should we go see him?"
Wen Qian relaxed slightly and smiled at Lu Chen. "Chen Chen, Dad is fine; didn’t he promise you he would come home?"
"Chen Chen isn’t worried."
"Mom is going to the cafeteria to get some food; do you want to come?"
Today, she truly lacked the mood to cook and planned to head straight to the cafeteria for some food while possibly gathering more information.
The cafeteria was filled with people from the unit; the news there should be more accurate.
Cheng Cheng didn't want to stay home alone.
"Alright, I'll take you out for a meal," his mother replied.
As she closed the door, Wen Qian held a lunchbox in one hand and took Lu Cheng's hand with the other, leading him towards the cafeteria.
On the way, everyone was discussing the injuries sustained by those who had gone on the mission. The hottest topic was about Lu Zheng getting hurt.
Wen Qian quickened her pace with Lu Cheng, trying to avoid them as much as possible. She could hear their conversations, but Cheng Cheng was still young and couldn't handle such heavy news.
When they arrived at the cafeteria, everyone turned to look at Wen Qian and Lu Cheng, whispering among themselves.
Wen Qian's heart raced again; she took a deep breath to calm herself. After getting their meals, she pulled Lu Cheng back home.
While serving the food, she had confirmed that someone from the mission had been injured, but whether it was Lu Zheng remained uncertain. However, the likelihood of Lu Zheng being hurt was high.
On the way home, Wen Qian felt a bit lost in thought. She had never imagined that Lu Zheng would get hurt or how she would cope with it if he did.
They encountered Aunt Tian on the road, who looked at Wen Qian and Lu Cheng with concern.
"Xiao Qian, don’t listen to what others say. Lu Zheng is so capable; he definitely won’t get hurt. Even if he does, it must be a minor injury," Aunt Tian reassured her.
Wen Qian forced a pale smile and nodded weakly, "Auntie, I know. I’m just waiting for Lu Zheng to come back."
Aunt Tian frowned slightly at Wen Qian's haggard appearance, worried for her well-being. Watching Wen Qian's distant figure, she sighed, "What is this? My goodness! Can’t things be a little better for them? Oh heavens! Have some mercy on them! They’ve only just settled down; let them enjoy a good life!"
As Aunt Tian muttered her prayers with her hands clasped together in front of her chest, her words did nothing to ease Wen Qian’s worries; instead, they intensified them.
Aunt Tian was well-informed within the military; if she said that, it was likely true—Lu Zheng must be in danger this time.
Wen Qian blinked back tears and suppressed the turmoil and pain inside her. Cheng Cheng had just gotten a father back; she had only just begun to feel happiness and stability again. Would all of that be taken away?
Step by step, she made her way home, slowly adjusting her mindset. One step at a time—Wen Qian had lived through this once before; she could start over again if necessary.
She had money in her hands and the ability to survive; she would definitely be able to provide well for Cheng Cheng. And as for Lu Zheng, she would take good care of him too.
Wen Qian pushed open the door and entered the courtyard. She placed the lunchbox on the table in the living room and heard some commotion from inside. She turned back, pulling Chen Chen along with her.
In an instant, her eyes widened, and tears began to well up uncontrollably. Her vision blurred slowly as the hand at her side clenched tightly.
Dad, Dad, you’re back.
Lu Chen broke free from Wen Qian’s grasp and ran crying toward Lu Zheng, who stood at the doorway. He wrapped his arms around Lu Zheng's legs and began to sob, voicing his complaints in between tears.
Dad, everyone said you were hurt and that you wouldn’t come back. I was so scared. Dad, please don’t do that again. Ugh, Dad, I missed you so much.
A tear slipped from Wen Qian's eye and rolled down her cheek. She looked into Lu Zheng's eyes and suddenly smiled, but the bitter smile at her lips and the tears at the corners of her eyes betrayed her emotions.
Lu Zheng smiled back at her, his eyes reddening as he gently rubbed Chen Chen's little head with one hand.
For a moment, no one spoke in the room, yet it felt as if everything had been said.
Lu Zheng and Wen Qian silently gazed at each other, unable to suppress their laughter. Wen Qian lowered her head and chuckled softly, tears dripping onto the floor. She raised a hand to wipe her tears away.
The heavy weight that had been gripping her heart all day finally fell to the ground.
She cried with relief, laughed freely, and smiled joyfully.
She had been waiting for someone from the military to take her to the hospital to inform her about Lu Zheng.
Chen Chen was still clinging to Lu Zheng's legs, crying loudly with a pitiful pout on his little face, occasionally voicing his grievances.
Lu Zheng had scratches on his face; he looked haggard with one arm bound in front of him, his gaze fixed intently on Wen Qian.
He crouched down and wrapped his other arm around Chen Chen, using his large fingers to wipe away the tears on his face.
“Don’t cry anymore, Chen Chen. Daddy is back now. I promise I will keep my word.”
Chen Chen’s little face was red from crying. He tried to compose himself and pointed at Lu Zheng's injured arm with a small finger, hoarsely asking,
“Dad, how did your arm get hurt? Does it hurt?”
