The mother and son set off from home, encountering several families on their way to school.
When a sister-in-law spotted them, she greeted, "Are you heading to class, Teacher Wen?"
Wen Qian smiled with pursed lips. Recently, everyone had started calling her Teacher Wen after learning she would be teaching at the school. Although she had corrected them a few times, it was no use; their enthusiasm was too infectious.
"Xiao Qian, wait up!"
Wen Qian turned to see Aunt Tian tugging at Wang Zhuo as they hurried along.
When they reached her, Aunt Tian was panting heavily, while Wang Zhuo stood beside her, his face flushed. He was tugging at Aunt Tian's shirt.
"Grandma, I told you to hurry up! I'm exhausted!"
Just as he looked ready to plop down on the ground, Aunt Tian grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back up.
"If you dare sit on the ground, I'll spank you!"
"Your clothes will be filthy by the time we get to school if you keep this up."
With no choice, Wang Zhuo clung to her leg, gasping for breath.
Aunt Tian smiled at Wen Qian. "Luckily we ran into you; let's go together! I was worn out at home. If I hadn't bumped into you, I wouldn't have known how to manage with this little rascal!"
Wen Qian walked alongside Aunt Tian while the two little rascals led the way ahead of them.
"Xiao Qian, you're going to teach today—are you nervous?"
After saying this, she tugged at her clothes and smiled shyly. "Today is the first time I'm sending my grandson off to school; I'm so nervous! I even changed into this outfit—how does it look?"
Wen Qian paused and looked her up and down.
"Auntie, you look great! Really great! It makes you look especially lively."
At the mention of looking lively, Aunt Tian straightened her back proudly and beamed at Wen Qian.
"Right? I think it looks particularly good too! It makes me feel years younger," she whispered in Wen Qian's ear. "Even my daughter-in-law praised me!"
Wen Qian gave Aunt Tian a thumbs-up!
"Auntie!"
The political commissar was holding Yuan Yuan's hand ahead of them. The little girl was restless and kept glancing back.
When she turned around again, she spotted Wen Qian and Lu Chen in the distance. Her eyes widened in surprise as she broke free from the political commissar's grip and ran over.
When Wen Qian saw the little girl, she was already running towards her. She crouched down slightly and hugged her.
"Auntie, you’re going to be a teacher now. Can you teach me?"
Wen Qian smiled and gently tapped her little nose, saying helplessly, "No, Auntie is teaching fourth grade, and Yuan Yuan is only in first grade."
The little girl pouted unhappily. "Alright then!"
Many children from the family compound were starting first grade, and they encountered quite a few on the way.
Wen Qian first took Lu Chen to his first-grade classroom when she arrived at the school.
She found the principal's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in, it's not locked."
Wen Qian pushed the door open and saw a woman in her fifties sitting inside.
"Hello, Principal!"
Principal Shen looked up in surprise at Wen Qian. "You must be from the Lu Zheng family! Teacher Wen, please come in."
Wen Qian sat on a chair beside the desk and smiled as she asked, "Principal, has my schedule been arranged? When do I start teaching?"
Principal Shen set down her pen and shifted slightly to look at Wen Qian. "Teacher Wen, let me give you a brief introduction to our school.
Our school not only has children from your military district but also kids from several nearby villages. Although they aren’t many, there are still quite a few students.
The children's foundational knowledge varies quite a bit, so I hope you'll be patient during your classes and try to explain things in detail."
"Your schedule has already been arranged; it will be on your desk in the office."
She looked at Wen Qian with some regret. "Teacher Lin Silin is about to go into labor soon; could you please help with third-grade math for just a month? The textbooks are already on your desk."
She stood up and led Wen Qian to the office.
The door to the office was open, and as they entered, they saw several teachers already inside.
There were more female teachers than male teachers, all young people in their twenties or thirties.
Principal Shen knocked on the door lightly. "Excuse me for interrupting everyone; this is our new teacher, Teacher Wen."
"She will be responsible for teaching fourth-grade math and temporarily handling third-grade math as well."
She guided Wen Qian to a desk and pointed it out. "This will be your desk. Our environment is limited here, so I hope you'll bear with us."
After introducing Wen Qian in detail, Principal Shen hurriedly left to attend to other matters.
Wen Qian sat on the stool and took out her fourth-grade math textbook from her bag. She glanced at the class schedule on the table; there weren't many classes each day, usually two lessons, at most four.
She flipped through the third-grade textbooks on the table and noted that they weren't much different from the fourth-grade ones, so she could teach them.
"Hello, I’m Lu, and I teach fourth-grade language arts."
Wen Qian turned to the voice and saw a quiet little girl with big eyes and a round face. She looked timid but adorable.
"Hello, I’m Wen Qian."
Lu's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked Wen Qian up and down.
"You’re Wen Qian?!"
Everyone in the office turned to look at Wen Qian with similar expressions of disbelief.
Wen Qian looked at them in confusion and smiled shyly. "Why are you all looking at me like that?"
Lu nervously pressed her lips together and quietly explained to Wen Qian, "You’re famous around here. We heard you’re really fierce and tough. We all thought you were tall and strong, but we didn’t expect..."
Wen Qian could guess what Lu was about to say next. It was obvious—she didn’t expect her to be so thin!
Since coming to the base, Wen Qian had gained quite a bit of weight, her complexion looking healthier. Her skin had also lightened considerably; she had always been fair, but after getting tanned, it took time for her to return to her original color.
Now, although her skin lightened more slowly than before, it was still acceptable. Her complexion was similar to everyone else's, not noticeably darker.
"Hey, I heard you beat up Chi Xuecha several times. Are you really that tough?"
"I also heard you’ve beaten up a lot of people! You just hit anyone you see in the family compound. You won’t hit us, will you?"
"I also heard that Captain Lu gets beaten up every day at home. Many people saw him getting hit until he couldn’t even stand."
The girl who spoke suddenly realized what she had said and shrank back in fear, quickly covering her mouth.
Wen Qian blinked, frowning slightly in distress.
What were these rumors? When did they start spreading?
