The principle is actually quite simple. Wen Qian briefly explained it to her sister-in-law, and she understood right away. Before leaving, she left a few Shaqima for Lu Chen.
"Keep these for you and Chenchen to eat. Don't refuse; I feel a bit guilty taking just this much."
"Have you heard? Lu Zheng has gone on a mission and won't be back for about a week?" Yi Xuecha glanced at the fawning Guo Xiaojuan beside her, who nodded expressionlessly.
"I know, who in the military doesn't know such trivial matters? What's so surprising about it?" Guo Xiaojuan frowned at her, seeing that she didn't quite understand. She immediately explained, "With Lu Zheng gone, doesn't that mean we can make our move?"
"With Lu Zheng gone, it's just Wen Qian and a child left. What is there to be afraid of?" Yi Xuecha scoffed at Guo Xiaojuan's urgency. "What do you know? When the men in the military go on missions, their families are secretly protected. You think you can just act? If you try to grab someone, it'll be you in trouble."
"I don't want to take that risk. I'd rather wait until Brother Lu Zheng comes back before making a move." Guo Xiaojuan patted Yi Xuecha. "There's protection outside, but there's none in the military district. They can't possibly provide twenty-four-hour protection!"
"Then we still have our opportunities; we can find a chance to act." Yi Xuecha propped her chin on her hand and pondered for a moment before turning to Guo Xiaojuan. "Do you have any ideas?"
During this time, she had been behaving herself and hadn't gone looking for that little vixen Wen Qian. Her old man had reluctantly let her out, thinking she was scared! He even said she should behave herself or go back to the countryside.
Why should she go back? If he hadn't insisted on marrying her off to that country bumpkin, she wouldn't have ended up like this. She glanced disdainfully at Guo Xiaojuan, who couldn't come up with any plans either—what a useless person.
If it weren't for the fact that this useless person still had some value, she would have kicked her out long ago! Guan Weiguang was also useless; he kept dragging his feet on a task and made excuses about not finding an opportunity.
It was time to push him a bit!
"Alright, you hurry up and think of something. Come find me once you've got an idea; otherwise, don't blame me for ignoring you later." With that, Yi Xuecha strutted away proudly.
Guo Xiaojuan ground her teeth in frustration as she watched her leave, stomping her feet in anger.
That vixen!
She had gone to find Jiang Qing these past few days, but that man didn't give her any face at all. With her beauty unmatched in the village and countless suitors turned away by her, how could he be so ungrateful?
What right did he have to refuse her!
He had his reasons for reluctance. Guo Xiaojuan gritted her teeth; she would never give up so easily. That Yang Tong was actually Wen Qian's man, and the two of them were flirting with each other. Guo Xiaojuan looked down on that man; he was not worthy of Wen Qian.
After leaving, Guo Xiaojuan headed towards the cafeteria, tiredly looking at her hands, which were red and swollen. Recently, she had been helping Guo Dajuan in the cafeteria, cooking meals to bring in some income for the family. Chen Liang had even looked at her with a bit more kindness and hadn’t told her to get lost again. But she was exhausted; she had never done so much work at home before.
When serving rice, she had given Jiang Qing a little extra meat, yet he didn’t even say thank you!
Wen Qian spent the day helping several sisters make school bags. The children in the family courtyard all had bags similar to Lu Chen's. When the little guy came home with his bag, he pouted unhappily, snuggling into Wen Qian's arms.
“Mommy, everyone’s bag is just like mine; I’m not special anymore. I want a special bag!”
Wen Qian couldn’t help but smile at her son’s antics. “Chenchen, you need to learn to share. Look at how many treats the aunties brought you from the courtyard.”
Though the little guy was still a bit upset, his lips couldn’t help but curl up.
For dinner, Wen Qian made a spicy chili sauce. The batter for the sauce was simple but incredibly delicious—though it did require quite a bit of oil! She made the batter a little thicker, adding just the right amount of chili powder and salt, mixing it well.
She heated up a pan and poured in oil! Once the oil was hot, she poured in the batter while stirring continuously to prevent it from sticking to the pan. After cooking, there was no residue left at the bottom of the pan; it turned out soft and glutinous with a spicy flavor.
Whenever they didn’t feel like eating vegetables, Wen Qian would make this dish as it could be enjoyed on its own. It paired perfectly with steamed buns and corn cakes—best eaten hot!
I can personally vouch for it; although simple, it’s truly delicious! I learned this from my grandmother; the taste is top-notch!
Lu Chen was happily devouring it, with chili sauce smeared all over his mouth and chopsticks.
“Mommy, why don’t you make this more often?”
Wen Qian chuckled as she handed him a napkin, raising an eyebrow helplessly. “Mommy doesn’t have time to cook every day; usually, it’s your dad who cooks.”
Lu Zheng cooked and ate as well.
Not long ago, during a chat among the aunts, an elder from the family courtyard mentioned that when Lu Zheng first arrived, his stubborn personality led him to be sent to the kitchen brigade for a while. Gradually, he developed his cooking skills! By the time he left the kitchen, everyone was quite reluctant; it was rare to see someone cook so well.
His dishes were often lacking in oil and salt, and seasoning was minimal. Cooking simply was not easy. Adding more oil and salt could enhance the flavor, but that was a different matter from actual cooking skills.
One evening, when Wen Qian was about to give Lu Zheng a bath, the little guy refused. He frowned at Wen Qian and said, "Mom, Dad said that men should bathe themselves and not trouble their mothers. Besides, you said girls can’t bathe with boys; I’m a boy."
Wen Qian couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time; Lu Zheng had indeed instilled such teachings in their child. The little guy was only five years old, yet he spoke with a serious expression that mirrored Lu Zheng's own stern demeanor. "You go ahead; Mom will wait outside for you."
As Wen Qian lay in bed holding the little one to sleep, she unconsciously turned her head to look outside.
"Mom, wake up! It's almost time for school; Chen Chen will be late!"
When Wen Qian groggily opened her eyes, she saw Lu Chen squirming on top of her like he had taken some kind of stimulant. The little guy was full of energy.
Wen Qian glanced at her watch; it was only half past six—still too early to get up. With a helpless sigh, she stretched out her mischievous hands and tickled him under his arms and at his sides.
"That's what you get for waking me up, you little rascal!"
"Hahaha! Mom! Hahaha! I'm sorry!"
"I know I was wrong! Please stop tickling me; I’ll be late for school!"
