Sometimes, to save time, Wen Mu would do this, which not only improved their home life but was also simple and convenient.
Wen Qian took a piece of flatbread, spread a bit of chili on it, and then added some stir-fried vegetables. One bite in, and it was incredibly delicious! With a mouthful of bread and a sip of water, she quickly finished one piece.
Wen Qian began to tidy up the things she needed to take outside. Lu Chen ran in excitedly, immediately spotting Wen Qian.
“Mom, what are you making? It smells so good!”
As soon as he entered, he saw the flatbreads on the table and looked at Wen Qian with wide, excited eyes.
“Mom, what is this?”
“It’s flatbread. Let me get you one to eat!”
Lu Chen had always followed Wen Qian around, eating whatever she made, never having tasted anything particularly fancy. Naturally, such good food was not something they often had.
With both little hands securely holding the flatbread, Lu Chen took bite after bite, his mouth stuffed full.
“Mom, it’s really delicious!”
Wen Qian looked at Lu Chen's radiant little face and felt a pang of guilt. “It’s tasty, right? After you eat for a while, I’ll make you more!”
“Xiao Qian, hurry up! We need to go!”
“I’m coming!”
Hearing Aunt Tian's voice, Wen Qian hurriedly ran outside while instructing Lu Chen, “Chen Chen, don’t go out yet. Wait for your dad to come back and let him eat before we head out.”
She grabbed a stool and joined Aunt Tian and the others outside. Once they gathered together, they rushed toward the open space in the courtyard.
By the time they arrived, quite a few people had already taken their spots; fortunately, there weren’t too many yet, so they could still grab good positions.
Wen Qian set down her stool and sat down to rest. Aunt Tian fanned herself with her hand beside her.
“Oh my goodness, I’m exhausted! Every time it gets so exciting and happy; we have to prepare early!”
“Xiao Qian, have you eaten?”
Wen Qian smiled and replied, “I have!”
A few of them sat on stools chatting while waiting for others to arrive. Before long, the courtyard was filled with people all around them.
When Lu Zheng arrived carrying Lu Chen in his arms, he almost couldn’t find Wen Qian among the crowd.
“Mom!”
Wen Qian turned her head and saw them coming; Lu Chen was still happily munching on his flatbread. Sitting on the stool, Lu Zheng placed Lu Chen on his lap.
“It’s really delicious!”
“What did you say?” The noise around them was too loud; Wen Qian only saw Lu Zheng's lips moving but couldn’t hear clearly.
Lu Zheng leaned closer to her ear and whispered, “I said it’s really delicious.”
Wen Qian instinctively turned her face away and touched her ear with a smile. “As long as it’s good!”
"You two have such a good relationship! Whispering sweet nothings in front of everyone," said Aunt Du, who was sitting next to Lu Zheng. She was known for her good temper and love for chatting, but most notably, her loud voice.
With her booming voice, the previously noisy crowd fell silent, all eyes turning to Lu Zheng and Wen Qian. Both of them straightened up awkwardly, avoiding each other's gaze. Aunt Du chuckled at their embarrassment. "Go on, keep talking! Pretend we’re not here."
After saying that, she adjusted her posture and leisurely continued, "You're still young. It’s been so long since you two have seen each other; of course, you’d be all clingy."
"Old Du, you were even more clingy with your Old Tang back in the day! You still have the nerve to talk about others!"
Everyone in the military knew about it! Aunt Du laughed heartily without a hint of embarrassment.
"What’s wrong with being clingy? It’s not illegal! You two aren’t clingy at all?" Her cheerful personality made it easy for everyone to join in the banter without any hard feelings; it was just a way to lighten the mood.
"Mom, where should I sit?"
"Hey, Sister Qian!" A little girl ran over to Wen Qian. Wen Qian recognized her as the girl from the shopping cart—Tang Siyu.
"Sister Qian, are you here to watch a movie too?"
Wen Qian nodded with a smile; she quite liked this little girl. She had a good personality and looked adorable. "Do you have a seat?"
"Yes! That’s my mom over there."
Wen Qian followed the direction of her finger and was surprised to see it was Aunt Du.
"Siyu, come sit here! Your mom saved a spot for you!"
Tang Siyu smiled at Wen Qian before running over. It turned out that Aunt Du had raised such a shy daughter despite her own outgoing nature.
The movie started; it was set during the war period. Wen Qian felt a wave of shock wash over her. She knew Lu Zheng's job was dangerous, but she never realized just how perilous it could be. Watching soldiers engage in fierce battles filled her with both worry and anger, and tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
As she glanced at Lu Zheng beside her, he handed her a tissue. Turning her head slightly with red eyes, she accepted it and wiped away her tears. Perhaps Lu Zheng had his own reasons for staying away all these years.
After the movie ended, there were sniffles all around; everyone was quite emotional, especially in response to such a film.
On their way home, Lu Chen clung tightly to Lu Zheng's neck, unwilling to let go as he whispered softly in his ear, "Daddy, don’t die! Chenchen doesn’t want to be without Daddy!"
He had just gotten his father; he couldn’t lose him now!
Lu Zheng comforted him for quite some time before the little one finally calmed down.
After washing up at home and lying in bed, Wen Qian still couldn’t settle down. Images from the movie kept flashing through her mind. Was Lu Zheng out there risking his life just like those soldiers?
Noticing Wen Qian lost in thought, Lu Zheng sat on the bed and interrupted her reverie.
The situation in the country has improved significantly compared to before; it is no longer as dangerous as depicted in movies, and there is no need for concern.
Wen Qian furrowed her brows, her expression serious as she looked at him. "You need to pay more attention to safety in the future. For my sake and for Chen Chen's, you must be more careful."
"Okay!"
Two weeks passed, and during this time, Chi Xuecha and Guo Xiaojuan had quieted down considerably. Wen Qian enjoyed a period of peace.
Elementary school was starting the day after tomorrow, and Wen Qian occasionally felt nervous as she organized her teaching plans for the classes. Lu Chen was also going back to school soon, and he excitedly circled around Wen Qian.
At that moment, Wen Qian was busy preparing a backpack for Lu Chen, having momentarily forgotten about everything else.
"Mom, make it look nice! I want to show it to Yuan Yuan and the others," Lu Chen said eagerly.
Wen Qian smiled at her bouncing son and gently ruffled his little head. "Alright, Mom will make it look nice for you."
The fabric for the backpack was specifically chosen in military green, as per Lu Chen's request. Ever since watching the movie, the little guy had developed an extreme admiration for Lu Zheng. He knew his father was impressive but never realized just how remarkable he truly was.
"Mom, when I grow up, can I be as amazing as Dad?" Lu Chen asked, leaning on the table and looking at Wen Qian with a mix of hope and anxiety.
"Of course you can! But Chen Chen has to study hard first," she replied.
"Oh well!" The little guy pouted with a comical expression.
Wen Qian chuckled as she continued her work, and before long, a new backpack was ready. It was simple—a crossbody cloth bag.
Lu Chen happily put it on and rushed outside. "Mom, I'm going to show Yuan Yuan!"
Wen Qian watched him with a gentle smile, filled with affection.
However, just then, Lu Zheng arrived unexpectedly. His face was serious and anxious as he looked at Wen Qian.
