Wen Qian turned her head and saw Lu Chen's face flushed, his mouth agape, looking at her with red, fearful eyes.
Wen Qian quickly put down her chopsticks and nervously looked at him. "Chen Chen, what’s wrong?"
Lu Chen pointed quickly at the remaining fish in his bowl.
Wen Qian immediately rushed over, realizing he must have gotten a fishbone stuck in his throat. She had him open his mouth to take a look and confirmed that a fishbone was lodged in his throat.
There was an old method from her hometown that said if you chewed on a steamed bun a few times and swallowed it, the fishbone would go down with it. However, Wen Qian felt uneasy about that approach.
Vinegar!
No, they were running low on vinegar at home, and if the bone didn’t come loose, they might run out of vinegar before it worked.
Lu Zheng picked up Lu Chen and stood up, looking at Wen Qian. "Don’t worry, we’ll take him to the infirmary."
The two of them rushed out with the child, leaving Wen Qian sitting alone on the bench, unable to eat anymore. She stared at the bowl where she had already picked out the fish bones and the piece of fish meant for Lu Chen.
Sigh!
When they returned, Lu Chen had stopped crying. He was lying in Lu Zheng's arms with red eyes, sucking on a piece of milk candy.
In the morning, at Chi Xuecha's house.
"Let’s talk! What are your plans? I didn’t bring you out this early just for you to sit around and rest."
Chi Xuecha couldn't hide her disdain as she covered her nose and opened the window for some fresh air.
Guo Xiaojun felt awkward sitting or standing; she nervously fiddled with her hair.
"Speak up! Don’t tell me you haven’t thought it through. If you haven’t figured it out, why are you even here wasting my time?"
Chi Xuecha looked at Guo Xiaojun’s timid demeanor and felt frustrated.
"Stop stammering like a mute!"
(Note: No offense intended towards those who are mute!)
Guo Xiaojun sat down, tugging at her clothes as she spoke softly, "I... I just came out and haven’t thought it through yet. But I... I’m sure I’ll figure it out soon."
"You’ll figure it out? By the time you do, it’ll be too late! That wretched woman Wen Qian will have already started teaching."
This morning, when Mother went to find Father, she had heard that news.
How could she be allowed to teach at school when she hadn’t even done so herself?
She had graduated high school too; why shouldn’t she be allowed?
She was about to explode with anger!
When Team Leader Chi returned, she had to ask him why she wasn’t allowed to teach.
Being a teacher would bring her so much prestige; those people in the family compound who looked down on her would no longer be able to do so.
In due time, they would all rush to curry favor with her. Chi Xuecha thought to herself, lifting her head proudly, a hint of disdain curling at the corners of her mouth.
Really?
This matter had surpassed Guo Xiaojun's understanding. A person from the countryside could actually teach and be a teacher. Could she also do that? There was a primary school in her village where teachers didn’t have to work and still received money. That was a good job.
Why hadn’t her elder sister told her about such a great opportunity? If she hadn’t found out on her own, would her sister have kept it from her? Guo Xiaojun felt a surge of anger towards Guo Dajun.
Indeed, as their mother said, once the elder sister married someone else, she became part of another family. No wonder she hadn’t informed her. Perhaps her sister was afraid that she would snatch away her chance.
The more Guo Xiaojun thought about it, the tighter she gripped her pants, her lips pressed into a thin line as she glared at the ground with resentment.
If her sister wouldn’t help her, then she would find a way on her own.
She cautiously looked up at Chi Xuecha, trying to ingratiate herself. “Xue, you can teach now?”
“Can I lie?” Chi Xuecha replied. “If you don’t hurry up and think of something, she really will be teaching at the school.”
Guo Xiaojun moved a stool and sat beside Chi Xuecha, smiling obsequiously. “Xue, are you going to teach?”
“I—”
Chi Xuecha was momentarily taken aback by the question, but upon seeing Guo Xiaojun’s eager eyes, she straightened up and shot her a mocking glance.
“Of course I’m going to teach. When I said you should think of a way, I meant for you to come up with your own solution.”
After saying that, she placed her hand on Guo Xiaojun’s hand. Though she felt disdainful, she could tolerate it.
“Xiaojun, we’re different. I still have my dad; I’m his precious daughter. He definitely won’t abandon me. You’re different; you’ve come here relying on your elder sister. If your sister and brother-in-law don’t take care of you anymore, you’ll truly have no way out and will have to return to the countryside.”
“Do you really want to go back to the countryside? Don’t you want to stay in the army forever?”
“I consider you my friend; I’m doing this for you! The solutions you think of are for yourself.”
Chi Xuecha’s words struck deep into Guo Xiaojun’s heart.
She fell into contemplation.
Chi Xuecha was right; last time, her elder sister had suggested that she return to the countryside!
She didn’t want to go back; she absolutely couldn’t go back.
She had already seen what life in the city was like—how could she ever want to return to the village? She might even end up being married off to an old man in exchange for a bride price.
Wait!
Jiang Qing!
She had to find Jiang Qing and make him marry her!
At that time, she would be able to call herself a city dweller, and her older sister and brother-in-law would surely flatter her. She would become the most impressive and successful person in the entire family. She would truly be a city person.
"Thank you, Chixue Tea!" Jiang Qing exclaimed.
However, Guo Xiaojun still couldn't forget her own goals. She forced a smile as she looked at Chixue Tea. "Xiaoxue, look at you all teaching now. Can I do that?"
"You? Teach?"
"Can you even read? You can't recognize a single character and you want to teach? Why don't you just fly up to the sky!"
Chixue Tea looked at Guo Xiaojun in shock, unable to hold back her mocking laughter. She looked down on Guo Xiaojun with disdain. It was truly underestimating this woman to think she could have such thoughts.
Hearing such harsh words, Guo Xiaojun could only feel her face flush with embarrassment. She gritted her teeth tightly, trying to suppress her anger. "I was just saying it casually, Xiaoxue, don’t get upset."
"I... I’ll go home and wash up before coming back to find you. I’ll think of a way," Guo Xiaojun said, forcing herself to remain calm as she walked out of Chixue Tea's room with a grim expression.
As she caught sight of Chixue's mother’s disdainful gaze, she smiled and said, "Goodbye, Auntie," before hurriedly leaving.
When she returned home, she found Guo Dajun resting at home. Anger surged within her as she directly pulled her sister and asked, "Sister, why didn’t you find someone to help me? Why didn’t you rescue me? Am I still your biological sister? Are you still my dear sister?"
"When I came here, Mother said for you to take good care of me. Is this how you take care of me? You let me go in twice without finding anyone to save me, just watching me suffer alone inside."
Guo Xiaojun shouted at Guo Dajun, seemingly wanting to vent all her grievances and suffering. It was bad enough that Chixue Tea looked down on her; what right did Guo Dajun have to do the same?
Guo Dajun looked at Guo Xiaojun with surprise and sadness before raising her hand and slapping Guo Xiaojun across the face.
