The figure moved slightly and began to advance.
As Shi Shu reached the doorway, he bumped into someone standing there. After cursing under his breath, he took a couple of steps back.
Impatiently, he looked ahead and froze for a moment, realizing it was Lu. He forced a smile and said, "Old Lu, when did you get back? You startled me."
Lu looked at him with a scrutinizing gaze, a deep smile appearing on his face. "I haven't gone anywhere. I invited you over for drinks; how could there be no wine? I'll go get some."
"Really?"
Shi Shu suddenly turned around anxiously, pointing at Lu Yao and Ding Cuihua, muttering in dissatisfaction, "Such a big thing happened at your home, why didn't you tell me? We've been old buddies for so many years; do you not consider me a true brother?"
"How could that be?"
Lu replied quickly, "If I hadn't heard some noise coming from your house and come to check it out, I wouldn't have known such a big thing happened at your place. If it weren't for Xiao Yao telling me, would you have planned to tell me today?"
Shi Shu turned away in anger, shooting Lu a reproachful glance.
Seeing Shi Shu's expression, Lu suddenly burst into self-deprecating laughter, his hunched body leaning back as starlight flickered in the corners of his eyes.
The sound of his self-mockery reached the ears of the three people in the room and Shi Shu, stirring a hint of fear within them.
Ding Cuihua began to feel increasingly anxious. Did Lu know something? But they had hidden it well; he had never noticed all these years! Even Lu Yao only learned about it when she personally brought him to meet Shi Shu and revealed it on the spot.
She knew her son's mouth well. He was tight-lipped, especially regarding matters concerning property and life; how could he possibly spill anything?
While Ding Cuihua was lost in thought, Lu had already pulled Shi Shu into the house.
"Alright, stop overthinking it. Didn't I hear that your family is building a house? You must be busy at home; how could I disturb such an important matter? Besides, what’s happening at my place isn’t really that significant."
Shi Shu raised his eyes to meet Lu's gaze and saw the amusement in his eyes. He shivered slightly and forced a smile.
"It's just building a house; my family's matters can't possibly be as important as yours."
Lu placed the wine he had bought on the table and sat down with a grin as he looked at Shi Shu. "Is your family still doing alright financially? Brother, I've been having a bit of trouble lately; you can see how my family is doing."
He leaned forward slightly and asked curiously, "What are you working on these days? It seems like you're making good money; take me along!"
"Hahaha! I'm not doing anything substantial—just some odd jobs here and there. I happened to run into some good folks who paid me a bit extra!"
Shi Shu avoided looking directly into Lu's eyes, leaning back as he laughed awkwardly.
"Good folks? They must be paying quite well if you can afford to build a house!"
Lu whispered softly but ensured that everyone in the room could hear him.
He looked at the stiffened Shi Shu for a moment, then turned his gaze to Ding Cuihua.
When Ding Cuihua glanced over at him, he showed no restraint in hiding the murderous intent and hatred in his eyes.
Ding Cuihua's pupils widened, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at Lu, who felt satisfied with her expression.
This wretched woman dared to betray him, turning him into the biggest joke. Wretched people are all the same; even Lu Zheng's mother was a wretched woman.
Why did they all have to betray him? They were all wretched!
Lu's breath quickened, his lips trembled with rage, and his clenched fists could barely remain steady. His body felt unsteady as well.
He looked at Shi Shu, who was lowering his head and looking guilty, took a few deep breaths, and forced a stiff smile at the corners of his mouth.
He picked up a wine glass and placed it in front of them, filling it to the brim!
"Old Shi, drink up! I've poured it for you!"
Shi Shu stared at the wine glass before him and the two bottles of liquor. A hint of confusion rose in his heart as he asked, "Why are both bottles open? One bottle is enough!"
He reached for the bottle closest to Lu, but just as he was about to grasp it, Lu stopped him.
"Come on, we opened two bottles because so much has happened recently. We can't leave until we're drunk; let's drink more and enjoy ourselves today, brother."
One glass of wine had already gone down!
Shi Shu noticed that Lu seemed to be slightly intoxicated and felt a stir of thoughts in his mind. He immediately nodded in agreement.
"Alright, let's enjoy ourselves!"
The two began to drink back and forth!
However, when Shi Shu started to feel dizzy, he realized that Lu still hadn't gotten drunk; he looked like he could handle another bottle.
Though puzzled, his already hazy mind couldn't afford to think too much about it.
"Old Lu, how can you drink so much today?"
"Maybe it's because so much has happened lately; I'm troubled inside and can't get drunk even if I want to."
Lu's murky eyes suddenly cleared for a moment as he glanced at Shi Shu before becoming murky again.
"Drink!"
At this point, Shi Shu didn't want to think too much either; he just knew he had experienced a scare today and felt troubled inside, so drinking more would help drown his sorrows.
After downing two bottles of liquor, Shi Shu was already slumped over the table while Lu still sat upright on his stool.
Behind them, Lu Yao watched the two fathers drinking and felt quite envious but dared not call out to Lu easily now.
Yesterday, Mr. Lu had given him a thorough beating, and now he dared not act recklessly anymore. However, he sensed something was off.
Old Shi had already passed out; how was Old Lu still standing? Based on past experiences, Old Lu would be tipsy after just two cups, but now he had downed an entire bottle!
He looked at Lu and said softly, "Dad, your alcohol tolerance seems to have improved! Uncle Shi is already out cold, and you’re still doing fine!"
Suddenly, a cold laugh from Lu startled Lu Yao. He nervously chuckled, "Dad, if you’re feeling unwell, why don’t you lie down for a bit and rest?"
"Rest?"
Did he want their family to reunite?
Ding Cuihua, having discovered Lu's true intentions, tried to speak up but could only manage a series of muffled sounds that were barely audible.
It was about time; he shook Shi Shu awake and called out loudly, "Old Shi, you should head home now; it’s getting dark!"
Shi Shu groggily got up and squinted outside, realizing it was indeed getting dim.
"Alright then, I’ll head out first. Next time I’ll invite you over for drinks at my place. Old Lu, we’re still good brothers!"
Lu gave a light pat on Shi Shu's arm and smiled faintly, his voice barely a whisper.
"Old Shi, I might only get to drink your family's wine one last time! I’ll savor it slowly and carefully!"
"We’ll definitely still be good brothers; don’t worry, we’ll meet again in the next life!"
Shi Shu laughed heartily. As he turned to leave through the door, he suddenly looked back at Lu Yao with a grin.
"Son, I’ll come to see you again next time!"
Lu Yao felt his heart leap into his throat in fear. He nervously bit his lip and quickly glanced at Lu to explain.
"Uncle Shi treats you like a real brother; I feel like his son too."
Lu looked at him with a smile, his murky eyes and weathered face revealing something strange!
"Why do you need to explain so much? Do you think I don’t know?"
"I’ll see Uncle Shi off; I’ll be back soon!"
Lu deliberately elongated the last sentence as he spoke slowly.
