Before heading to the army, Wen Qian and Lu Zheng brought Lu Chen to see their parents one last time. They arrived at the place, still carrying offerings, but this time there was even more.
Lu Zheng had brought a bottle of white liquor, while Wen Qian had bought the pastries her mother loved most in her lifetime, along with two plates of dishes she had prepared herself. Lu Chen understood that this would likely be their last visit for a while. His father and mother had said they would be leaving in a couple of days, and the chances of returning would be few.
He obediently stood beside Wen Qian, looking at his sorrowful mother with comforting eyes. "Dad, Mom, we're here to see you again!"
Wen Qian chatted as she tidied up the weeds, as if her parents were sitting beside her, listening intently. "How have you been lately? Your daughter has been unfilial, not able to visit you often."
"Xiao Chen and I are leaving with Lu Zheng soon. There will be fewer opportunities to come back, so you should take a good look at me now. I hope when I return, you will still recognize me."
The Lu family finally received their retribution; you can rest assured now that your daughter will live for herself from now on and strive for Xiao Chen. I definitely won’t let anyone bully me again.
A proud and shy expression lit up her face, like a little girl showing off for a reward in front of her parents. But as she spoke, tears began to fall silently down her cheeks. She forced a smile, her eyes curving beautifully, yet there was no trace of joy within them.
Choking back sobs, she said, "I used to worry you so much. Now you can rest easy; there’s no need to worry about me anymore. Just be at peace!"
Before her rebirth, whenever she couldn't bear the torment and exhaustion, she would come here to sit and talk. At first, she even complained bitterly.
She remembered kneeling before them, unable to hold back her loud cries and grievances: "Why did you have to leave so early? Why did you abandon me alone? Why did you have to die protecting the village's property? That belongs to everyone, not just your family! What am I supposed to do without you?"
Gradually, she became numb; she would just come here to sit for a while, lean against something, or lie down. Sometimes she felt a sense of relief here that made her want to sleep whenever she visited.
At first, she would sleep too long and would get scolded by Cuihua when she returned home. Later on, she learned to manage her time better—taking short naps instead.
After Xiao Chen was born, her visits became less frequent. Sometimes she would come here with him to cry together; eventually, it turned into just a quick glance before leaving.
Every time she came here, it felt like having a solid backing and support! Now that she thought about it carefully, her parents probably hadn’t been able to rest either; after all, having such an ungrateful daughter always disturbing them couldn’t have been easy.
She smiled faintly as tears rolled down from the corners of her eyes. Squatting down, she picked up a piece of pastry and brought it to her mouth, taking a gentle bite.
"This pastry isn’t as good as what my mother used to buy!" She set the pastry down and took out some dishes from the basket as if presenting treasures before the mound of earth.
"Dad, look! This is your favorite dish for drinking! I learned how to make it from Mom long ago but never had the chance to prepare it for you until now."
Wen Qian looked down at the familiar dishes and couldn’t help but sob softly. These dishes were something her parents had never tasted before they passed away!
The unexpected incident involving Wen Fu and Wen Mu occurred just as families were returning home for dinner. That day, Wen Qian had eaten breakfast and quietly sneaked into the city to buy some wine, leaving her parents unaware.
At noon, she had deliberately asked her parents to come home early; she wanted to surprise her father. Wen Fu teased her with a smile, playfully tapping her forehead with his large hand, as if afraid of hurting her.
"You little rascal, your dad is coming home early to see what you’ve prepared for me!"
Wen Mu watched the playful interaction between father and daughter, smiling gently. The old man had already known about the surprise and was playing along with his daughter’s little riddle.
In the afternoon, she waited at home, eagerly anticipating their return, but instead received the devastating news. In a panic, she rushed over only to find their lifeless bodies.
Wen Qian wiped her tears and tried to compose herself. Perhaps she would never cry like this again! Every time she came here, it felt as if she could see her parents; the grievances and longing she had endured always compelled her to share them. Tears would flow uncontrollably!
Lu Zheng took out a bottle of wine and four glasses, placing them in front of him. He opened the bottle and poured four glasses full. He handed one glass to Wen Qian while taking one for himself. Kneeling down, he sat up straight, looking solemnly at Wen Fu and Wen Mu.
"Mom and Dad, this wine you never got to drink before, we’ve brought it this time. Let’s drink together—me, Xiao Qian, and Chen Chen; our family of five will share a toast."
He raised his glass and drank deeply while Wen Qian took a small sip, feeling the effects of the alcohol already. Lu Zheng then picked up the glasses meant for Wen Fu and Wen Mu, pouring the contents onto the ground with reverence.
He filled the glasses again!
Holding up his glass to them, he said, "We’ve taken this step; we won’t be able to visit you often in the future. Please forgive us!" He raised his hand and drank again!
Once more, he poured out some wine!
The glasses were filled yet again!
"I promise I will cherish and protect Wen Qian and Chen Chen; I will pay attention to safety so that we can have a complete family!"
After three glasses downed, it felt as if all unspoken words had transformed into the wine they shared! The remaining wine was poured out for Wen Fu. Wen Qian smiled at Wen Mu and said, "Mom, we’ve poured so much for Dad; you must keep an eye on him and not let him drink too much!"
Little Chen Chen knelt down seriously like a small adult, sharing amusing stories about recent events with Wen Fu and Wen Mu. Lu Zheng and Wen Qian sat nearby watching him speak quietly, listening intently!
The three of them took a detour and arrived at the back of the village, where a man was already waiting for them.
As they approached, the man inside looked over and recognized them.
"Brother!" he called out to Lu Zhengdao.
"Have you found out everything clearly?" Lu Zhengdao asked.
The man smiled, "When I take action, there's nothing I can't find out. I know everything clearly."
"Enough with the small talk, just get to the point!" Lu Zhengdao urged.
"The Stone family is right in the village; they haven't gone anywhere. Did you know? They recently built a new house for their youngest son to get married! I don’t know where they got the money from!"
"The money for building the house must have come from Cuihua," Lu Zhengdao speculated.
"Speaking of which, Lu's father is really a big fool! Not only does he have to support his own family and their children, but he also has to take care of another man's entire family."
"The Stones are notoriously lazy, yet they never run out of food at home. Their meals are quite decent, and they've even built houses for both their eldest and youngest sons."
"Surely Stone's wife must be aware of this. After all, money doesn’t just appear out of thin air; if she observes closely a few times, she would definitely figure it out."
"For the sake of money and her own family, she chose to stay silent!"
"Isn't he always out doing something?" the man asked, looking at Wen Qian and waving his hand dismissively. "No, he's not doing anything significant. He’s just been hanging around at the widow's house in the neighboring village; that's as far as it goes."
"Help me send him a message. Tell him to come to the Lu family; Lu's father wants to invite him for a meal and drinks."
"They've been old partners for many years now; Wen Qian doesn’t know how many times she’s prepared snacks for them."
"Lu's father can’t hold his liquor well but loves to drink! Every time he gets drunk, he forgets what happened and remains oblivious to what Cuihua and Stone were doing in their room."
"Wen Qian accidentally stumbled upon it while cleaning up. Luckily, she quickly dodged and didn’t dare to say anything; she doesn’t even know if Cuihua found out."
The man patted his chest confidently. "Don't worry; even if Stone doesn't tie me up, I've tied him up before."
Sure enough, the day after Wen Qian and Lu Zheng left, Stone came by. However, just minutes before his arrival, the village chief had called for Lu's father.
Not seeing Lu's father around, he boldly walked into the house. As soon as he stepped inside, a pungent smell hit him.
He pushed open the door and entered!
