Lin Sihang sat anxiously, unable to move, while Aunt Tian and Wen Qian stood up and walked toward the door.
As they reached the entrance, they saw three children, especially Wen Yuanyuan, whose small face was red from crying, her clothes covered in mud, and dirt smudged on her face, looking pitiful.
"What happened?"
"Woo... Mommy!"
"Grandma, someone is bullying us!"
Wen Qian immediately hugged the two children tightly, while Aunt Tian held her own grandson. They pulled the children inside and closed the door.
Lu Chen didn't cry much but pouted unhappily, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Wen Yuanyuan cried heart-wrenchingly, her small hands gripping Wen Qian's clothes tightly.
"Mommy, I want Mommy! It's not my fault that Mommy died, it's not!"
The little girl's unclear words echoed in their ears.
Lu Zheng noticed the commotion and walked out of the house, wearing an apron. As he opened the door, several men exchanged glances with him.
Before they could even smile, they saw the distressed children.
Commissioner Wen walked over nervously and squatted down behind Wen Yuanyuan, gently patting her back.
"Yuanyuan, why are you crying? Come here, Daddy will hold you."
"I don't want to! I want Mommy!" She clutched Wen Qian's clothes even tighter, seemingly afraid she would leave.
With no other choice, Wen Qian could only comfort her by patting her back softly and whispering soothing words in her ear.
Lu Zheng took Lu Chen aside and asked seriously with concern, "Xiao Chen, can you tell me what happened?"
Tears streamed down Lu Chen's cheeks as he choked on his words.
"Daddy, a bad aunt bullied us. They pushed Yuanyuan!"
"What?"
Wen Qian hurriedly lifted Wen Yuanyuan onto her lap and carefully checked her over, discovering that her knees were scraped.
"Why did they push you?"
Lu Chen could no longer hold back his tears and cried out loudly: "They said Mommy is a bad woman and that they would bully Mommy! When they saw us, they hit us and said Yuanyuan is a child without a mother."
"They also told us not to say anything; if we did, they would hit us."
The bad aunt they were referring to was someone everyone in the courtyard could guess. Captain Chi stood nearby, crouching down beside Lu Chen, and asked him, "Who do you think the bad aunt is?"
"She's one of the two bad aunts who always bully my mom," Lu Chen replied.
Captain Chi's face shifted from a glimmer of hope to a dark expression. He didn't dare look at Lu Zheng and Commissioner Wen's faces. Before drawing any conclusions, Lu Zheng asked Lu Chen to explain the situation again.
It turned out that after Chi Xuecha was thrown out of the courtyard by Wen Qian that morning, she was furious and sought out Guo Xiaojun to vent her anger. The two of them had deliberately come to the family compound, a rarely visited place, to keep their conversation private.
They were loudly cursing Wen Qian, and their voices echoed throughout the area. However, it seemed that Chi Xuecha was unaware that this place had recently become a favorite spot for children to play, especially for games like hide-and-seek—it was simply an ideal venue.
While they were cursing, Wen Yuanyuan, Lu Chen, and Wang Zhuo were hiding nearby! A few other children had also overheard them.
As Chi Xuecha and Guo Xiaojun continued their tirade, they became increasingly outrageous, wishing they could dig up the Wen family's ancestral grave. They were even plotting how to frame Wen Qian when suddenly Wen Yuanyuan ran out. She glared at Guo Xiaojun and Chi Xuecha and shouted, "You can't bully Auntie! You can't curse her either!"
With no choice, Wang Zhuo and Lu Chen quickly rushed out to protect her, and the other children followed suit. The group of kids formed a small circle, staring defiantly at the two women.
Realizing their scheme had been discovered, Chi Xuecha and Guo Xiaojun exchanged awkward glances before loudly threatening the children. "You better not tell anyone about this! Otherwise, I'll have my dad deal with your parents and make sure you all get kicked out of the family compound!"
The children knew who Chi Xuecha was and that her father was a captain with a higher rank than their own fathers. They looked nervously at Wen Yuanyuan. Among them, only Wen Yuanyuan's father held a slightly higher position.
"I'll tell Auntie and Uncle Lu that you started it!" Wen Yuanyuan declared.
"You!"
Although Chi Xuecha was furious, she still maintained some rationality. She could deal with the other kids if necessary; her family wouldn’t face serious consequences. But Wen Yuanyuan was another matter entirely—if her father, Commissioner Wen, found out, she would definitely be in trouble and would have to face his wrath.
Guo Xiaojuan had long held a grudge against Wen Yuanyuan. She had already inquired about Wen's family background from her sister, Guo Dajuan. Although she couldn't physically harm her, she could certainly provoke her to tears.
She hadn't laid a hand on anyone, and even if her father held a high position, he couldn't do much to her. They were all just kids; what was there to fear? Besides, she had Chixue Tea by her side for support!
With a smug expression, Guo Xiaojuan took a couple of steps forward and leaned down to whisper to Wen Yuanyuan, "Do you know why you don’t have a mother?"
Looking at Wen Yuanyuan's wide eyes, she smirked and exclaimed loudly, "It's because of you! You're the reason your mother is gone. Your mother died because of you!"
"No, I didn't!"
Wen Yuanyuan was startled, disbelief etched on her face as she stared at Guo Xiaojuan. Tears began to fall uncontrollably down her cheeks, yet she continued to glare fiercely at Guo Xiaojuan.
"You're lying! My dad never said that! You're a liar!"
"I'm not lying! Everyone knows your mother died because of you. Your dad is just trying to protect you!"
Wen Yuanyuan was a clever girl. Though no one had explicitly told her, she had heard whispers and sensed that her mother's death was somehow connected to her. But how could it be that she had caused her mother's death?
As she watched Guo Xiaojuan approach with a triumphant laugh, Chixue Tea looked on in shock and disbelief. How could Guo Xiaojuan be so bold? This was something even she wouldn't dare say out loud.
Lu Chen was crying as he spoke, his voice growing hoarse and barely intelligible.
Wen Zhengwei's face darkened completely; he clenched his fists tightly, his muscles tense. He glanced at Team Leader Chi.
Team Leader Chi looked apologetically at him. "Old Wen, I... I haven't taught my daughter well..."
With a heavy sigh, he looked at Wen Zhengwei with guilt written all over his face. "Just do whatever you think is best."
Suddenly feeling a small hand grasp his own, he looked down to see Wen Yuanyuan's swollen and red eyes. Her big eyes were rimmed with red and glistening with tears, and her little face was streaked with tear marks.
He crouched down, filled with guilt and concern as he gazed at his daughter.
Wen Yuanyuan looked earnestly at him, her voice choked with sobs as she asked, "Daddy, did I really cause Mommy's death? Did Mommy die because of me?"
Wen Zhengwei's eyes instantly filled with tears. He gently wiped away Wen Yuanyuan's tears with his hand and choked out, "No, Mommy was a hero. It wasn't because of you."
"Yuanyuan took a long time to come into this world; you didn’t cause Mommy's death!"
