Everyone in the room turned around to see the stern-faced Commissioner Wen walking in.
Wen Yuanyuan's previously cheerful smile instantly froze on her face, but the little girl reacted quickly, and a big smile returned to her lips. She ran over, grabbed Commissioner Wen's hand, and pulled him toward Wen Qian. Her small hands and feet were working hard, and her little face was slightly flushed from the effort.
She turned her head, furrowing her brows in displeasure as she looked at her reluctant father and urged, "Daddy, hurry up!"
Commissioner Wen looked at his little daughter with reluctance and raised his hand to lightly tap her forehead. "You little rascal, talking nonsense."
Though he said that, he still moved in sync with her actions. Wen Yuanyuan led him to stand in front of Wen Qian and Lu Chen. She released his hand, ran to Lu Chen's side, grabbed his hand, and tugged him toward Commissioner Wen.
The little girl’s expression was serious, but a barely contained smile lingered at the corners of her mouth as she earnestly introduced, "Daddy, let me introduce you. This is Lu Chen, Uncle Lu's son. When I grow up, I want to marry him!"
Her clear voice echoed throughout the room, ringing in Commissioner Wen's ears like a bell. His face darkened instantly.
Wen Yuanyuan shook Lu Chen's hand and frowned unhappily at his dazed expression. "You need to call him Daddy quickly! I’m waiting for you to call Auntie Mommy!"
Lu Chen was still trying to process what was happening when he heard her urging and managed to call out, "Daddy!"
Wen Qian glanced at Commissioner Wen’s face, which had turned an even darker shade, with veins bulging on his forehead and his lips tightly pressed together. She felt a bit worried for Wen Yuanyuan but also found the situation amusing. This little girl was truly something else!
"Wen Yuanyuan, come back home with me right now," Commissioner Wen said through gritted teeth. If it were any other time, the little girl would have already scampered off behind him by now.
In the family compound, she was fearless of everything except for making Commissioner Wen angry. But at this moment, she stood there with a serious expression on her face and declared defiantly, "I’m not going back! What I said is right. I want Auntie to be my mommy! You can’t take Auntie away from me; I can only marry Lu Chen!"
Her words startled everyone in the room, leaving them wide-eyed in surprise.
Lu Zheng had also stepped away from the doorframe and walked briskly over to stand beside Wen Qian, his steps slightly hurried.
The little girl pouted, looking at Commissioner Wen with a sense of grievance.
Wen Qian, standing behind her, felt a chill run down her spine. She had only known Wen Yuanyuan for two days; surely the little girl couldn't have developed such strong feelings for her in that short time!
"I just want my mommy," Wen Yuanyuan thought to herself. "I haven't done anything wrong."
She released Lu Chen's hand and turned to throw herself into Wen Qian's arms, quietly sobbing. All she wanted was her mother; she hadn’t done anything wrong! She wasn’t a bad child trying to steal someone else's mother—couldn’t she find a way to cope?
Commissioner Wen watched her with a heart full of sorrow, his expression tinged with a bitter smile, his gaze filled with compassion for Wen Yuanyuan.
In the room, only Lu Zheng understood the situation. Seeing Commissioner Wen like this, he knew he was thinking about his sister-in-law again. He walked over to stand beside him; they exchanged a glance before stepping out together.
Wen Qian comforted the little girl tightly in her embrace as Wen Yuanyuan cried heartbrokenly. This time, Lu Chen didn’t insist on taking Wen Qian from her; instead, he stood nearby, watching her with concern.
Gently stroking Wen Yuanyuan's back, Wen Qian gradually calmed her down. The little girl lifted her head, her eyes red as she looked at Wen Qian.
"I want my mommy. Everyone says I'm a child without a mother, that I'm a disaster. I'm not a disaster! Daddy and Brother say I'm their treasure."
There were no loud cries or heart-wrenching screams; instead, Wen Yuanyuan looked at Wen Qian with pitiful eyes filled with panic and unease. Her hoarse voice softly conveyed the fear within her.
Wen Qian gently wiped away her tears and comforted her softly. "Yuanyuan hasn’t done anything wrong, but your mommy will be sad to hear this, and so will your daddy."
"Why?"
"Everyone has their own parents; everyone is unique. So you have a mommy too. It's just that for certain reasons, she can't be with you as you grow up."
"You want Auntie to be your mommy, right? But you and Chenchen are still too young; it’s not possible right now. Let’s talk about this when you’re older, okay?"
Wen Yuanyuan looked at Wen Qian helplessly and then anxiously glanced outside the courtyard.
What if she had upset Daddy? Would he be angry with her?
"Auntie is happy that you like her. I like Yuanyuan very much too," Wen Qian continued gently. "You are a beautiful and smart child; everyone will like you. You can come play with Auntie anytime; I will always welcome you."
Wen Qian gently tucked the stray hair behind Wen Yuanyuan's ear and wiped the sweat and tears from her face. The look in Wen Qian's eyes was filled with tenderness.
She was also a pitiful child, but fortunately, she had her brother and father to protect her as she grew up. But what about her father?
"Come on, Yuanyuan, go comfort Dad. He definitely won't be angry with you," Wen Qian encouraged.
Wen Yuanyuan hesitated, rubbing her small hands together, but eventually stood up and took small steps toward the courtyard exit. She slowly lowered her head and walked over to Commissioner Wen, reaching out to grab his hand. In a soft voice, she murmured, "Dad, I'm sorry. Yuanyuan shouldn't have been so thoughtless. I know I was wrong."
Commissioner Wen felt no anger in his heart; all he felt was pain, helplessness, and sorrow. He squatted down and held his daughter's small hand, looking at her seriously and apologetically.
"Yuanyuan is not at fault; it's Dad who didn't notice what you wanted in time. It's Dad who was wrong."
Wen Yuanyuan quickly shook her head as she looked up at him. "No, Dad, it’s just that I didn’t say anything. You didn’t know."
"I won't speak out of turn again," she promised.
The two of them had tempers that flared quickly but reconciled just as fast. However, seeing Commissioner Wen's expression soften, the little girl still had a mischievous glint in her eyes. She nervously wrapped her arms around his neck and asked softly, "Dad, can’t I let Auntie be my mom? I really like her. Even though Lu Chen is a bit dark and shorter than me and so skinny..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a loud crash interrupted from behind them. Turning around, she saw Lu Chen standing there with a shocked and hurt expression on his face.
Lu Chen felt deeply wounded by this revelation and ran into the house crying.
In the courtyard, both Lu Zheng and the Wen father-daughter pair stood awkwardly frozen in place.
Oh no!
This was bad!
She couldn’t marry Lu Chen now!
