"Is there anything more embarrassing than this?"
Just as she was speaking ill of someone, she was overheard. Lin Si winked at Wen Qian, signaling her to help. If it weren't for Wen Qian's incessant questioning, she wouldn't have said anything at all!
Noticing the food in Lu Zheng's hands, she quickly placed her hand on Aunt Tian's arm and urged, "Mom, it's getting late. Let's head home! Bao Tian said he wants to eat the vegetable rolls you make for lunch; we should get started."
Aunt Tian didn't quite grasp her intention and began to scold Wang Bao Tian instead, frowning. "Why is this child so greedy? He even names the dishes! Does he think I'm his cook? I'm not here to cater to him!"
"Don't make anything special for him; he may not look great, but he sure eats well."
"Let’s just keep talking and ignore him. Just whip up something simple."
Lin Si had always known her mother-in-law had a sharp tongue and a bit of a caustic nature. However, she never expected her own son would be the subject of such criticism.
At that moment, Wang Bao Tian in the training field suddenly sneezed several times. A comrade teased him, "Bao Tian, is your sister-in-law missing you? It’s almost noon; can’t wait any longer, huh?"
"Get lost! You dare joke about me? Looks like I haven't dealt with you in a while."
Lin Si quickly tugged at Aunt Tian's arm again. "Mom, let’s go! I’m hungry too."
"Alright, let’s go. It’s time to cook."
When Aunt Tian saw Lu Zheng, she finally realized that her daughter-in-law wasn’t just having a moment; she was hinting at something! As they left, they both forgot about Wang Zhuo and felt a bit uneasy about facing Lu Zheng. Only Aunt Tian, feeling bold, greeted him without hesitation.
"Has Captain Lu returned?"
"Yes, Auntie. Sister-in-law."
"Auntie is heading home to cook. I’ll come by again when I have time."
The two women walked out the door and glanced back at Lu Zheng one last time.
Just now, Lu Zheng didn’t hear what they said, right?
Wen Qian pulled up the slightly plump Wen Yuanyuan beside her, and the two of them returned to the house together to sit down. Lu Zheng entered the room with something to show Wen Qian.
Wen Qian nodded at the items; everything was in order, and there were no issues. The quality of the food had improved significantly, which showed that a lot of effort had been put into it. Lu Zheng then took the items into the kitchen.
Suddenly curious, Wen Qian looked at Wen Yuanyuan and asked, “Yuanyuan, have you started school yet?”
“Not yet. My dad said I can start when school begins.”
It was still summer vacation, but it wouldn’t be long before school started again. At that time, Xiao Chen could also go to school with her.
She noticed the little girl’s somewhat messy hair and reached out to touch it. “Auntie will fix your hair; it’s almost falling apart.”
The little girl’s hair wasn’t very long, likely because she was afraid it would be hard to manage if it grew too long.
Wen Yuanyuan nodded happily, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Wen Qian. She quickly turned around.
Wen Qian took off the hair tie and ran her fingers through the girl’s shiny black hair. The texture was really nice, very similar to her own hair from before.
A smile crept onto Wen Qian's lips as she fondly gazed at the little girl; they seemed to have a special connection that made them get along so well.
Before long, she had tied up two ponytails that hung down on either side of Wen Yuanyuan’s shoulders. Paired with her delicate round face, it looked cheerful and adorable.
Wen Yuanyuan turned around and leaped into Wen Qian's arms, tightly hugging her waist without letting go.
“I have something bold to say,” Wen Yuanyuan declared earnestly. “Auntie, will you be my mom? It would be great if you were my mom.”
Lu Zheng walked into the room just in time to hear her words, his heart skipping a beat.
Just as one rival had left, another was already lining up—this one being his leader!
Wen Qian looked at Wen Yuanyuan’s hopeful face and smiled awkwardly. “Yuanyuan, you can come play with Auntie anytime, but I can’t be your mom!”
“Really? You really can’t be my mom?”
The little girl looked at her with a pitiful expression, her gaze sincere and fervent.
Before Wen Qian could say anything, she was interrupted by a sudden voice.
“No way, she’s my mom!”
Lu Chen had originally planned to go inside and find Wen Qian for a drink, but he never expected to hear someone trying to take his mom away. He was certainly unwilling; after all, she was his mother!
Lu Chen rushed over and hugged Wen Qian tightly around the neck, clinging to her while casting a wary glance at Wen Yuanyuan. He knew that his mom liked her, which made him even more afraid that she would take his mom away.
Wen Qian wore a helpless smile on her face; the sweet burden was too heavy to bear. She never imagined that someone would actually try to take her away—how unbelievable!
Wen Yuanyuan pouted, looking unhappy as she stared at Lu Chen. Suddenly, her big eyes blinked, and with a triumphant look, she declared loudly, “When I grow up, I’ll marry you, and then Auntie can be my mom! We can both call her ‘Mom’!”
Wen Qian and Lu Zheng, who was leaning against the wall, exchanged incredulous glances at her. The little girl proudly lifted her chin, convinced that her idea was brilliant.
Lu Chen was also stunned. He looked confusedly at Wen Qian and then back at Wen Yuanyuan. This knowledge clearly exceeded his understanding.
Wen Qian chuckled as she looked at Wen Yuanyuan and lowered her voice to ask, “Yuanyuan, how did you come up with that idea? Who taught you?”
Wen Yuanyuan wrapped her arms around Wen Qian’s neck and said with a hint of arrogance, “I heard it from Aunt Guo. They said once you get married, you become a family. Then I can call you ‘Mom’!”
“Aunt Guo? Is that the one next door?”
“Yes! That aunt! She said when I grow up, I should marry her son. Then we’ll be family, and she’ll be my mom! I won’t be a child without a mother anymore.”
A cold glint flashed in Wen Qian’s eyes; she hadn’t expected that Guo Dajun would have her sights set on such a young girl. Perhaps she was also eyeing Comrade Wen’s position!
“So when I grow up and marry Lu Chen, I can call you ‘Mom’,” the little girl happily proclaimed. But before she could laugh again, a stern voice cut through the air.
“Wen Yuanyuan, shut your mouth!”
