Lin Si raised an eyebrow and smiled, but when she looked at Wen Qian, who pursed her lips and gave an awkward smile, she hesitated, unsure whether to speak up.
Wen Qian cracked some sunflower seeds and urged her, "Just say it! You don't have to worry about me; I'm not sensitive."
Lin Si's eyes flickered with surprise as she looked at Wen Qian. Not sensitive? Lu Zheng was her man!
Aunt Tian observed her daughter-in-law's demeanor and was about to urge her to speak when the words Wen Qian had just said floated into her mind. After pondering for a moment, she realized something was off. However, with the conversation hanging in the air, she felt a restless discomfort in her heart.
"Come on, just say it!" Lin Si displayed a helpless expression and continued.
It turned out that after the incident, that family had kept the news tightly under wraps; no one knew anything about Yi Xuecha. But by sheer coincidence, Team Leader Yi was on a mission with Lu Zheng and a few others and happened to pass by their hometown.
Team Leader Yi hadn't heard from his daughter in a long time and was worried. Since they were already passing by that household, Lu Zheng and the others decided to accompany him.
When Team Leader Yi knocked on the door, Yi Xuecha's mother-in-law saw him and quickly locked the door again. Although Team Leader Yi was puzzled, he wasn't foolish; he could tell from her reaction that something must have happened to his daughter.
After failing to kick the door open, Lu Zheng climbed over the wall. As the main door swung open, Team Leader Yi led a few people into the courtyard just as Yi Xuecha's in-laws came out of the inner room.
Her father-in-law hurriedly put on his clothes upon seeing Team Leader Yi, clearly having rushed out in a panic.
"Father-in-law, why did you come so suddenly? You should have let us know so we could prepare to welcome you!" He glanced at the open door with a smile and added, "You didn’t even wait for me to come out and open the door for you; that's a bit inappropriate!"
"Where is my daughter? Where is Xuecha? Let her come out to see me."
Yi Xuecha's father-in-law's face flashed with discomfort as he forced a smile. "Xuecha has gone to her maternal grandmother's house for a couple of days; you arrived at an unfortunate time."
Team Leader Yi didn't believe him at all. If that were true, then Yi Xuecha's mother-in-law wouldn't have looked so frightened upon seeing him! Something was definitely amiss!
Inside the house, Yi Xuecha, who was barely clothed, became agitated upon hearing Team Leader Yi's voice. She tried to spit out what was in her mouth but couldn't manage it.
Her hands and feet were bound, and she felt both fear and anxiety. She was terrified that if the team leader believed the old woman's words, it would be the end for her—she would have no chance left. That would mean her life was over!
Suddenly, a small car drove into the village, and the villagers curiously gathered around it, glancing towards the home of Yi Xuecha's in-laws. To their surprise, several soldiers were present!
Word spread quickly, and soon enough, Yi Xuecha's in-laws' house was surrounded by people. With so many eyes on him, the team leader hesitated to barge in directly. He looked at Yi Xuecha's father-in-law and said, "Bring them here. I won't leave without seeing my daughter."
A villager, quick to speak, asked the team leader, "Didn’t you already take Yi Xuecha? We heard she ran away when Da Qing died."
Da Qing died?
"Yes," another villager chimed in. "It's been a week since he passed. We were wondering why you hadn’t come; it seemed so inconsiderate."
This topic had been discussed extensively! The son-in-law had died, yet the old father-in-law didn’t come to the funeral or offer help; instead, he took his daughter away without leaving any face.
They all said that he was a big leader now, and taking his daughter away meant he could find someone even better. If it weren’t for Da Qing’s family pressuring them, how could they have married off their daughter like that?
The team leader glared fiercely at Yi Xuecha's father-in-law. "Where is my daughter? Where is Xuecha?"
He had been on the battlefield before; his glare was as fierce as if he were about to kill someone. Yi Xuecha's father-in-law nearly wet himself from fear.
"I... I don’t know! After Da Qing died, she ran away. I have no idea where she is!"
The team leader grabbed Yi Xuecha's father-in-law by the collar, veins bulging on his forehead as he gritted his teeth. "Da Qing is dead! Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you inform us that my daughter ran away?"
"Father-in-law! What are you doing? You can’t resort to violence! We didn’t want to cause you trouble! You’re so busy!"
Busy? How could he be too busy to care about his own daughter?
However, even though Yi Xuecha's father-in-law said this, the team leader clearly did not believe him. His eyes were fixed on the closed door behind them.
When the couple had come out of the house earlier, they had deliberately closed the door with extra force, making sure it was tightly shut.
Inside the room, Yi Xuecha was sweating with anxiety. Suddenly, she noticed the thermos on the bedside cabinet. With all her strength, she moved her body and finally managed to touch it.
She gritted her teeth and with a forceful motion, the thermos fell to the ground.
The sound echoed, and everyone in the courtyard heard it.
Yixuecha's parents-in-law sighed inwardly, realizing the situation was dire. Inside the house, a chicken they had raised was loose and had knocked something over again!
Captain Yi observed their expressions, and the words "guilty conscience" were clearly written on their faces. He pushed past Yixuecha's parents-in-law and headed straight into the house.
Seeing something was off, Yixuecha's parents-in-law hurriedly tried to stop him, grabbing onto him, but Captain Yi was not someone they could hold back.
As soon as he entered the room, he saw his daughter tied to the bed, her clothes askew, and her face swollen from being hit!
At that moment, when Yixuecha saw him, tears of grievance welled up in her eyes, and as soon as the cloth was taken from her mouth, she coughed twice and began to cry loudly.
“Dad, Dad, you finally came!”
Captain Yi quickly took off his coat and draped it over her, covering her nearly bare body. His hands trembled as he untied Yixuecha!
The moment she was freed, Yixuecha threw herself into his arms, holding him tightly as if he were her last lifeline.
“Dad, they bullied me! They all bullied me!”
Captain Yi's eyes immediately turned red with pain as he gently patted Yixuecha's back. “Stay here for now; I’ll take care of it.”
“I’ll get revenge for you; just wait here!”
Yixuecha clung to Captain Yi's coat, shaking her head while crying. “I don’t want to! I’m scared! I want to go with you; I don’t want to stay here!”
“I’ll find someone to keep you company; just wait for me. Be good for now!”
Captain Yi called for Lu Zheng to come inside and keep Yixuecha company while he stepped out to deal with her parents-in-law.
As soon as Captain Yi removed the cloth from Yixuecha’s mouth, when she made a sound, everyone in the village was stunned!
Yixuecha hadn’t escaped? She was still tied up inside!
Yixuecha’s parents-in-law felt their legs go weak and suddenly collapsed to the ground.
It was over!
It's all over now!
