Lu Zheng walked quickly around the corner and saw Xiao Chen squatting on the ground, crying, with Guo Xiaojun crouched beside him. The sound of Xiao Chen's cries had started two minutes earlier.
Guo Xiaojun shouted angrily at Xiao Chen, "You wild child, why did you run? Do you know you almost bumped into me? Coming from the countryside, you have no upbringing!"
Xiao Chen looked up at the tall Guo Xiaojun, her eyes wide as she glared at him. He stepped back in fear, saying, "I didn't! You're lying!"
"Who am I lying to? You little brat dare to say I'm lying? Do you think Guo Xiaojun would lie?"
In a fit of anger, Guo Xiaojun crouched down and pinched Xiao Chen's arm twice. He cried out in pain.
As he looked at Guo Xiaojun, his mind suddenly filled with images of Zhang Yan and Ding Cuihua. Overwhelmed by fear, he curled up and cried loudly. "I... I didn't do anything! Don't hit me! Please don't hit me!"
The little guy trembled uncontrollably. Seeing him like this, Guo Xiaojun's anger began to dissipate as her mind cleared. She looked fearfully at Lu Chen, who was squatting on the ground.
Panicking, she glanced around and suddenly spotted Lu Zheng running toward them from around the corner. Her pupils constricted; she felt unsteady as she crouched down. Terrified, she quickly stood up and stepped back. "It’s not me! I didn’t make him cry! He scared me first!"
Lu Zheng hadn’t expected that in just a short while, Xiao Chen would be bullied. He hurried over, placed the lunchbox on the ground, and scooped Xiao Chen into his arms.
Seeing Lu Zheng, the little guy's face turned red from crying; his eyes were puffy and red, his mouth pouted as he burst into loud sobs. "Daddy! Daddy!"
"Um... No! Xiao Chen was just running slowly! It was Auntie who stuck her foot out to trip me!"
Lu Zheng gently patted Xiao Chen's back as he listened to his hoarse cries and felt his small body shaking.
Noticing that things were not going well, Guo Xiaojun wanted to leave quickly but heard Lu Zheng’s voice laced with hidden anger. "Guo Zhizhi, you can't leave until this matter is resolved."
Feeling awkward, Guo Xiaojun turned around. "I... I won’t blame him or apologize." With that, she turned to walk away.
"Guo Xiaojun, I need to clear my son's name."
"What do you mean by clearing your son's name? Isn’t it true that he scared me?"
At this moment, Guo Xiaojun felt a bit flustered but tried to maintain her composure. After all, Lu Chen was just a little brat; who would believe what he said? In the end, everyone would still trust her words.
Anyway, they had already offended him thoroughly on the train, so she didn’t mind adding this to the list.
Her older sister had said that Lu Zheng and her brother-in-law were not on good terms. The two of them had competed for the position of camp leader, and if it weren't for him, her brother-in-law would have definitely been the camp leader by now. If her brother-in-law were the camp leader, he could introduce her to better connections. At that time, the entire unit would be at her disposal, and she wouldn’t have to humbly beg them like she did now.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and her confidence grew stronger. But the moment she met Lu Zheng's gaze, she completely wilted.
At this moment, Guo Xiaojun was filled with regret. She shrank back in fear and resentfully glared at Lu Chen.
Just ten minutes earlier, Guo Xiaojun had been harshly lectured by her older sister, Guo Dajun, at home. Listening to her sister’s constant belittling words made her feel uncomfortable and stifled.
So what if she had eaten a couple more pieces of meat during dinner? And what about spending money? Didn’t her sister send money back for her to spend? Was it her fault that her shoes got stolen? Shouldn’t they blame the thief instead? She didn’t want to lose her shoes either; she felt bad about it too.
The more Guo Xiaojun thought about it, the more wronged she felt. On top of that, she was worried about how to deal with Jiang Qing.
As she stepped outside, she saw Lu Chen happily running around. Her eyes flickered as she slowly walked over. The little guy noticed her and moved aside slightly.
But unable to resist the urge to cause trouble, she took advantage of Lu Chen's moment of distraction and tripped him. He stumbled and fell without noticing.
Guo Xiaojun glanced around but didn’t see Wen Qian or Lu Zheng anywhere. They were still a distance away from where Lu Zheng and his family lived; no matter how loud this kid cried, they wouldn’t hear him.
She looked down at Lu Chen sprawled on the ground crying and smirked disdainfully at him. However, when she realized he wasn’t crying at all, a sense of dissatisfaction welled up inside her.
Why could his mother bully and humiliate her like that while he remained so happy? She just wanted him to cry.
But when Lu Chen finally did cry, before she could revel in her triumph for long, she suddenly caught sight of Lu Zheng’s figure.
“Daddy! I didn’t do anything! She tripped me first!”
Lu Chen hurriedly wriggled out of Lu Zheng's embrace. He pulled up his loose pants and pointed at his scraped knee for Lu Zheng to see.
"Dad, look, Xiao Chen isn't lying," Lu Chen said nervously as he glanced at Lu Zheng, afraid that his father wouldn't believe him.
Earlier, when the other kids in the village bullied him, he had gone to his grandmother for help but ended up getting scolded. He wanted to talk to his mother, but she was too tired! In the end, he went to the village elder to report the bullying, but people just accused him of lying. He tried his best to explain to the elder, sweating with anxiety.
Although the elder scolded the other children, everyone in the village still labeled Xiao Chen as a liar. At that time, none of the other kids wanted to play with him.
With his small eyes red from crying, Lu Chen looked anxiously at Lu Zheng, gripping his pants tightly with his little hands as tears began to well up again. He cautiously gazed at Lu Zheng and said in a trembling voice, "Dad, please believe me. Xiao Chen isn't a liar."
Lu Chen let out a huge sigh of relief. He excitedly hugged Lu Zheng's neck and cried before breaking into a smile, feeling incredibly happy. His dad believed him! His father was the third person to believe him after his mother and Uncle Yang.
"You’re lying! You’re lying!" Guo Xiaojuan's sharp voice cut through the air, drawing attention from several nearby households.
Wen Qian was puzzled as she waited for Lu Zheng and Lu Chen to return. She wondered why they were taking so long. Just as she was about to step outside to check, she heard voices from the courtyard. She walked out and noticed a crowd gathered not far away.
Slowly making her way over, she peered through the gaps in the crowd and saw Lu Zheng squatting on the ground with Lu Chen, whose face was red from crying.
She hurriedly pushed her way through the crowd and asked anxiously, "What happened? Why is Xiao Chen crying?"
Seeing his mother arrive only made Xiao Chen feel more aggrieved; he had just managed to hold back his tears when they surged back up again. He threw himself into Wen Qian's arms, burying his face in her neck and sobbing softly.
"Mommy, Mommy," he cried.
Wen Qian furrowed her brows and gently patted Xiao Chen's back while glancing at Guo Xiaojuan, who looked flustered, and at Lu Zheng, whose expression was grim.
In a stern voice, she asked, "What’s going on?"
