She knew Guan Weiguang, but that didn't mean Guan Weiguang was familiar with her. She had heard her daughter-in-law talk about him more than once, mentioning how he, a city dweller, was following around a divorced woman. If it were just any divorced woman, it wouldn't be a big deal, but this woman was no ordinary person.
In an instant, Aunt Tian understood everything. She glanced at Chixuecha and then at Guan Weiguang. So, Chixuecha was the one Guan Weiguang was pursuing. Throughout the journey, Guan Weiguang had been like a peacock displaying its feathers, circling around Chixuecha; she could tell he was smitten.
Moreover, Chixuecha had been around Lu Zheng, deliberately provoking Wen Qian. Wait a minute—Chixuecha was the divorced woman? She had gotten divorced?
Aunt Tian's expression resembled that of someone who had just heard a juicy gossip. She looked at Guan Weiguang and Chixuecha and smiled mysteriously. Guan Weiguang hadn't expected Aunt Tian to expose him so directly; his smile faltered slightly, and he stammered, unable to find the right words. He feared that if he said anything more, it would only complicate matters further.
Chixuecha shrank back like a quail. Aunt Tian had just learned of this shocking news and was in such a good mood that she didn't want to hold it against them; she decided to let it go.
As they continued on the last stretch of the road, Lu Zheng drove as smoothly as possible. With the windows down, the cool breeze made Wen Qian and Lu Chen feel much better.
By the time they arrived at the military base, Jiang Qing had already left early, and Guo Xiaojun wasn't there either; she must have gone back to the family quarters.
When Chixuecha and Guan Weiguang got out of the car, Lu Zheng drove straight to the entrance of their assigned house in the family quarters. He already knew where it was located; he had chosen it based on Wen Qian's request.
Lu Zheng got out of the car and hurriedly ran to the passenger side to help Lu Chen out. He wanted to assist Wen Qian as well but was politely refused.
Aunt Tian also got out of the car, smiling as she approached Wen Qian with her last package in hand. "Xiao Qian, I know where you live now. You two settle in first; I’ll come by another day to chat and introduce my daughter-in-law to you. My home is just over there."
Wen Qian followed Aunt Tian's direction and smiled weakly. Her face was pale, and she looked exhausted. "Alright, Auntie. I'll treat you to some warm food."
"Okay then, I’ll take my leave now."
Aunt Tian had already had everything else delivered home by the soldiers; she only needed to carry the last remaining package back herself. Her steps were brisk, and she took two steps at a time, eager to see her daughter-in-law and eldest grandson. As for her son, he was nothing to look at.
When the car pulled in, the people around noticed it too. A neighbor came out, and Wen Qian spotted Guo Xiaojun standing next to another woman, who was looking at her with a scrutinizing gaze.
"Commander Lu, this must be your daughter-in-law!"
Lu Zheng nodded, "Yes, this is my wife, Wen Qian." He introduced them, "Wen Qian, this is Sister Guo, the wife of Deputy Commander Chen."
"Hello, Guo Zhi!" Wen Qian was surprised to find out that they lived right next door, especially Guo Xiaojun. She immediately noticed the disdain and dislike in Guo Dajun's eyes directed at her.
Feeling a bit tired and wanting to rest, she said goodbye and pulled Xiao Chen into the house. Their belongings had already been sent over earlier; what had arrived recently was just the last few items.
Lu Zheng took the remaining things from the car into the house.
"Look at her, acting all lifeless. It's really bad luck to be neighbors with them," Guo Dajun remarked.
Guo Dajun shot her a warning glance and said sternly, "Watch your words; we’re still outside. If someone hears you, it could cause trouble."
"Your brother-in-law is still under him! You better behave and not offend Lu Zheng's wife."
Guo Xiaojun playfully shook Guo Dajun's arm and said, "Sister, don’t you dislike her too? I saw it!"
Once they were inside and the door was closed, Guo Dajun replied, "Even if I dislike her, I can’t show it openly. If others find out, it might cause trouble for your brother-in-law. You need to be careful."
"Oh come on, sister! I know already! Just don’t lecture me; I’ll definitely be careful from now on. I’m exhausted from the ride."
Speaking of which, Guo Dajun pulled her aside and asked, "I heard you came here with Jiang Qing on the same car and train compartment. Tell me how things are going between you two!"
Guo Xiaojun chuckled awkwardly as her voice grew softer. "Sister, we’re doing well! We talked a lot on the train! He even helped me with my luggage on the way to the base!"
"Really? That’s good to hear! Listen up; you must hold onto Jiang Qing tightly. Many people in the unit have their eyes on him; don’t take it lightly."
Guo Dajuan looked at her sister, who seemed a bit distracted, and tugged at her angrily. "What are you thinking? Did you even hear what I said?"
"Sister, I heard you. I understand, and I will definitely work hard." Guo Xiaojuan chuckled awkwardly, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes.
Guo Dajuan glanced over at the neighboring yard and sighed. "No wonder Lu Zheng doesn’t bring his wife over. With her looks, I wouldn’t bring her either; it’s just embarrassing."
"In my opinion, they won’t last long. There are still people in the army keeping a close watch on them!"
At this point, Guo Dajuan sighed regretfully and muttered to herself, "I originally planned to wait for Lu Zheng to get divorced and then let you be with him. Who would have thought that Jiang Qing would come along like this?"
"Fortunately, we changed our target; otherwise, if Lu Zheng had come with his wife, wouldn’t that have been awkward?"
Guo Xiaojuan felt anxious about Guo Dajuan discovering the truth and suddenly remembered the letter Guo Dajuan had written.
She hurriedly asked, "Sister, didn’t you say in the letter that there were three people? Now there are only two, right?"
Guo Dajuan waved her hand dismissively. "Just focus on Jiang Qing. She’s from the countryside; it’s only because of her decent abilities that I thought of introducing you two. But she doesn’t have a family background like Jiang Qing."
Guo Xiaojuan was relentless in her questioning. "Sister, just tell me! More options mean more hope, right? You said there are so many people in the army watching Jiang Qing! What if you can’t win him over? There might be other choices; otherwise, it’ll be too late and we’ll have nothing."
Guo Dajuan thought for a moment and replied, "Well, there’s also the squad leader Yang from the army; his name is Yang. He’s from a rural family too. You could pursue him as well. But you must secure Jiang Qing first; he’s the most important."
Guo Xiaojuan blinked and began to formulate a plan in her mind.
Meanwhile, Lu Zheng finished packing his things and checked the time—it was almost lunchtime. He walked into the house and said, "I’m going to get food from the cafeteria; do you want to come with me?"
Wen Qian wasn’t too keen on it, but Lu Chen excitedly ran over and hugged Lu Zheng's leg. "Daddy, I want to go!"
"Alright then, just make sure not to get too greasy; keep it light and simple."
"Okay! You can rest at home for now."
On his way there, they encountered quite a few people. At first, Lu Chen was a bit shy about greeting them, but gradually he became bolder and started calling out to everyone he saw.
When they arrived at the cafeteria, even more people greeted them. The little guy was chatting away so much that it felt like his mouth was on fire.
Suddenly, his eyes lit up as he pointed in one direction and shouted in his childish voice, "Uncle Yang!"
