Lu Zheng glanced at the woman speaking, then turned his gaze to his comrade beside him, his eyes filled with scrutiny.
Guan Weiguang looked at Lu Zheng and smiled wryly, silently mouthing that he was also forced into this situation. He then shrugged helplessly and gestured with his hands.
Wen Qian stood nearby, glancing at Jiang Mu. Just as she was about to get into the car, she was tugged by her clothing.
"You must be Lu Zheng's mother! Hello, Auntie! I'm Yi Xuecha, but you can call me Little Xue."
Wen Qian turned to face the young woman in front of her. She was indeed quite pretty, but the strong scent of tea was overwhelming. No wonder she was called Xuecha; when snow melts, isn’t it just green tea?
Lu Zheng's face darkened as he moved to pull her away, but Wen Qian signaled him to stop with a glance.
Wen Qian looked at Yi Xuecha, who was blinking cutely and trying to act charming, and smirked without any expression on her face.
"I am your Lu Zheng's wife. While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I don’t want my son to have an older sister just yet."
With that, she disregarded Yi Xuecha's displeased expression and got into the car, shutting the door without sparing a glance at Lu Zheng.
Yi Xuecha clenched her fists in anger, her eyes reddening as she glared at Wen Qian.
That vile woman! She said those things just to disgust her; she didn’t expect to be outmaneuvered like this. What was so special about her that Lu Zheng wanted to bring her along?
Not only was she unattractive, but she also looked older than her mother and wore shabby clothes. It was clear that Lu Zheng didn’t care for her at all; otherwise, he would have bought her new clothes.
Thinking this way, Yi Xuecha suddenly felt less angry. She looked at Wen Qian sitting inside the car and smiled.
She deliberately turned back towards Lu Zheng and spoke in a high-pitched voice, "Lu Zheng, why did you take so long to come? I missed you! You can’t leave for so long next time."
Lu Zheng frowned at her. "Comrade Yi, please speak properly and apologize to my wife. I don’t mind visiting Comrade Yi’s home once."
He stepped back two paces as Yi Xuecha leaned closer, his voice stern: "Comrade Yi, I have no interest in you whatsoever. I love my wife dearly and cherish my family. Please keep your distance from me and do not approach my wife."
Yi Xuecha watched Lu Zheng's retreating figure with tears in her eyes, stomping her foot in frustration.
How could he humiliate her like this in front of so many people? Was he not ashamed? When had she ever been treated this way?
This must have been taught to him by that vile woman in the car. If it weren’t for her, Lu Zheng would surely have liked only her; they would have married and had children together.
Lu Zheng must have been coerced; deep down, he still cared for her.
Yixue glanced at Wen Qian, whose figure flashed with jealousy and resentment, before turning her gaze back to Lu Zheng, her eyes filled with affection and obsession. Guan Weiguang stood nearby, watching Yixue cry, unable to resist stepping forward to comfort her. "Xiaoxue, please don’t cry. Lu Zheng surely didn’t mean it. He’s already married; you should let go. You deserve someone better."
Yixue wiped away her tears and looked at him defiantly, sneering dismissively. "Let go? Why should I? Someone better? You? You can’t compare to Brother Lu Zheng."
With a cold snort, she strode away, leaving Guan Weiguang looking at her in confusion, his hands clenched into fists in his pockets as he forced a bitter smile.
Jiang Qing approached, followed closely by Guo Xiaojuan, who looked at Jiang Qing with surprise. "Comrade Jiang, I didn’t expect us to be in the same place! Isn’t that wonderful? We really have fate!"
Jiang Qing walked on without a glance at her, feeling exasperated. He wondered if she was mentally unstable; hadn’t the officer on the train already made it clear? Her feigned ignorance was even more irritating.
Aunt Tian was brought over by an officer, carrying quite a few items—local specialties she had brought from her hometown to nourish her daughter-in-law. "Comrade, thank you so much! I’m sorry for the trouble; please take these. It’s just a small token of my appreciation. If you don’t accept it, I’ll feel bad and won’t be able to sleep tonight."
Aunt Tian tugged at the officer, trying to stuff two eggs into his pocket. The officer repeatedly declined while trying not to knock Aunt Tian over in the process. Finally, after persistent insistence from Aunt Tian, he reluctantly agreed to take one egg but slipped it into his pocket when she wasn’t looking before hurriedly escaping.
Everyone had arrived; thankfully, they had brought two cars or they wouldn’t have fit! Lu Zheng, Lu Chen, Wen Qian, Aunt Tian, Yixue, and Guan Weiguang were all in one car. Guo Xiaojuan shamelessly squeezed herself into the same car as Jiang Qing, bringing along her belongings.
On the road, Lu Zheng held Little Chen in the passenger seat while the three women sat in the back. Aunt Tian happily chatted with Wen Qian while Yixue watched from the side. Suddenly, she leaned forward and asked Lu Zheng, "Brother Lu Zheng, you’ve lost weight! Is it because your sister hasn’t taken care of you?"
"Oh dear," she continued with a sigh. "It’s all my fault for not being there; no one has cared for you! Luckily you’re here now; I’ll definitely help you regain your strength."
Aunt Tian shot her a strange look before glancing at Wen Qian and rolling her eyes behind Yixue's back. "What a nuisance! Just when I thought I was rid of one annoying person, another one shows up."
Having lived this long, Aunt Tian had seen all kinds of people and understood this woman’s intentions well enough.
Lu Zheng’s cold voice came from the front seat. "Comrade Yixue, please just take care of yourself. My matters are none of your concern; don’t worry about things that don’t involve you."
Moreover, my wife has no sisters; she is the only child in her family. You should refer to her as your sister-in-law.
You, Brother Lu Zheng, how can you say that to me? I'm just concerned about you! I feel for you.
And I don’t like calling anyone my sister-in-law; I prefer to call them sister.
She glanced at Wen Qian with a worried frown. "Sister, you won’t mind, right? I really didn’t mean it that way. I’ll try to change it gradually."
A strong aroma of tea wafted through the car, making Wen Qian feel like coughing.
"I do mind. I don’t like calling anyone my sister, and it’s easy for my sister to meet an early demise. If you’re willing to accept that, there’s nothing I can do about it, right?"
"You!" Yi Xuecha's face turned pale with anger. She never expected to be outmatched in conversation by Wen Qian, a woman from the countryside.
How could she lose to an older woman from a rural background?
She forced a smile and said awkwardly, "What are you talking about, sister-in-law? I’m still young; don’t scare me like that. It frightens me."
Lu Zheng suddenly asked Guan Weiguang, "How old is she?"
Guan Weiguang shot a surprised glance at Lu Zheng and hesitated. "Uh…"
"When is her birthday?"
"In February!"
Lu Zheng's next words pierced Yi Xuecha's heart like a needle: "My wife's birthday is in the same month; she’s younger than you."
