Wen Qian looked over and realized it was Guo Xiaojun who had fallen from the upper bunk. She was crouched on the floor, seemingly searching for something.
"My shoes! Where are my shoes?"
Guo Xiaojun, still half-asleep, was startled awake. In a flurry, she began to search around but found nothing. Frustrated, she moved over to Jiang Qing's side and reached out to tug at his leg.
Jiang Qing dodged and stood up, frowning as he looked at the woman squatting on the ground.
After searching for a while without success, Guo Xiaojun ran to look under Wen Qian's bed but still came up empty. She stood there, sweating profusely, muttering to herself in distress.
Suddenly, she turned to Aunt Tian and Wen Qian, her eyes wide as she lunged toward them.
"Is it you? Did you steal my shoes? I knew you envied me for having them, so you took them!"
"No, wait! You must be angry with me and threw my shoes away or hid them!"
"My shoes were brand new; I’ve only worn them twice! You have to pay me back— you must pay me back!"
Aunt Tian had long been annoyed by her. If it hadn't been for the police officer arriving at noon, she would have slapped Guo Xiaojun right across the face.
In a swift motion, Aunt Tian restrained Guo Xiaojun. Enraged, Guo Xiaojun shouted, "What right do you have to tie me up? You stole my shoes and won’t let me speak? Why is that fair? Is there no justice?"
"Where's the police? I want to report this! Someone stole my shoes! Help! Help! It's a crime!"
This time, Guo Xiaojun spoke with newfound confidence. Although Aunt Tian had her hands bound, she held her head high and shouted.
The police officer had been keeping an eye on the commotion nearby and rushed over as soon as he heard the noise.
"What’s going on here?"
"Officer," Guo Xiaojun exclaimed, "I lost my shoes! They stole them! You have to make them pay me back!"
The officer was taken aback by her boldness and turned to look at Wen Qian and Aunt Tian.
"Is what she says true?"
"Officer," Wen Qian replied quickly, "we don’t know anything about it. She just woke up saying her shoes were missing. How can you prove we stole them?"
"How could it not be you? We had an argument before I went to sleep; you must have taken my shoes because you couldn’t stand me!"
Wen Qian couldn’t help but laugh at her absurdity—she was both amused and exasperated by the situation.
"Even you know about this, how could we not have thought of it? So why are we being foolish enough to act like this?"
"You come here to slander us without any solid evidence."
Wen Qian turned to the police officer, her voice sharp and resolute. "Officer, I want to report her for slandering us. This has seriously disturbed me and caused me psychological harm."
"You... you're being unreasonable!"
Wen Qian took a couple of steps toward Guo Xiaojuan, watching as she instinctively stepped back in fear, a smirk forming on Wen Qian's lips. "Next time you slander us, please bring some concrete evidence. Otherwise, if you keep making baseless accusations, I will start to question your sanity."
Guo Xiaojuan's face flushed red with anger as she pointed at Wen Qian. "I—I warn you not to go too far! You—you took my leather shoes! If you don’t believe me, let me search your bag!"
"Why should I let you search my bag?"
Guo Xiaojuan immediately grabbed the police officer and pointed at Wen Qian, as if she had found a smoking gun. "Officer, did you see that? She refuses to let me search her bag, which means she must be guilty! The shoes are definitely stolen by her!"
"Please provide concrete evidence before making demands to search my bag; otherwise, I will firmly refuse to let you do so."
Lu Zheng stood protectively behind Wen Qian like an immovable mountain.
The police officer looked at Guo Xiaojuan. "Do you have any evidence?"
Guo Xiaojuan hesitated and replied slowly, "I... I don’t have any yet, but I’m sure it was them who stole it. Otherwise, they would know who did it since they’ve been sitting here the whole time!"
Aunt Tian interjected bluntly, "I didn’t see anything, and neither did Xiao Qian. We were busy talking ourselves; how could we have time to watch your bag? What do you think? Did you pay me or invite me to dinner for me to help you watch your things? Dream on!"
Aunt Tian was usually not one to back down from a fight, but this time she was determined not to relent. People like Guo Xiaojuan needed to be dealt with firmly.
"Officer, I don’t know anything."
Guo Xiaojuan scanned the area and spotted Jiang Qing. She approached with small steps and shyly asked, "Comrade Jiang, do you know who stole my leather shoes?"
"I don’t know!"
Seeing Jiang Qing’s cold demeanor made her nervous; she fidgeted with her fingers and bit her lip before asking again, "Comrade Jiang, please think again. Those shoes are very important to me."
Jiang Qing put down the book in her hands and looked at her coldly. "When I say I don’t know, I mean it. Don’t come asking me again. If I end up saying something later on, don’t blame me."
Guo Xiaojuan recalled what had happened before going to bed and quickly grabbed a police officer's sleeve. "Officer, you need to compensate me for my shoes."
This left not only Wen Qian and the others stunned but also the police officers bewildered.
"What did you just say?"
Guo Xiaojuan spoke slowly, word by word, "You owe me for my shoes. If you hadn't suddenly shown up at noon and scared me, I wouldn't have forgotten to put my shoes away. So it's all your fault."
This kind of behavior was a first for everyone around her; they had never seen anyone try to swindle money from a police officer before!
Wen Qian looked at Guo Xiaojuan, her wariness towards her diminishing to the lowest level. She was just too foolish; she probably wouldn't stir up much trouble in the future.
An older police officer turned to Guo Xiaojuan and said, "Could you please take your belongings with us to the dining car? We need to understand the situation better."
He then glanced at Wen Qian, adding, "We will also address the matter reported by this lady."
Even if he hadn't said anything, Guo Xiaojuan had no intention of leaving her bag behind; she was afraid that the last few pieces of clothing inside would be stolen.
She first pulled out a pair of worn-out cloth shoes from her bag, awkwardly put them on, and hurriedly followed along.
After that, Guo Xiaojuan didn't come back. Suddenly, shouting could be heard from outside the carriage, and it sounded like Guo Xiaojuan's voice.
Wen Qian was pulled over by Aunt Tian to watch the commotion. Even from a distance, they could hear Guo Xiaojuan's frantic shouts.
"If you dare touch my butt, I will sue you for harassment! I will call the police!"
