"How can you be Jiang Qing?"
The eldest sister had written in her letter that she had someone to introduce, a new instructor named Jiang Qing. She only mentioned this one person, which showed how much she valued him.
Jiang Qing turned to Guo Xiaojun and asked if she had any questions.
Guo Xiaojun stiffened, her face pale. She stammered, "It's nothing, nothing at all."
It's over, it's over! The person the eldest sister introduced has already offended someone before they even met. Moreover, the eldest sister was particularly pleased, saying Ji Qingqing had the best family background among them, but she was from the city! Her family conditions were certainly better!
Now that the eldest sister knew, wasn't she doomed?
Guo Xiaojun anxiously lay on her bed.
Lu Zheng and Jiang Qing briefly discussed team matters without mentioning anything specific.
When Guo Xiaojun came down from the upper bunk, she shyly walked over to Jiang Qing in her leather shoes, fidgeting with her hair and apologizing in a high-pitched voice.
"Jiang... I’m really sorry about earlier! I didn’t mean it. I apologize; please don’t be mad at me. I’m Guo Xiaojun; you can call me Xiaojun."
Jiang Qing looked at Guo Xiaojun with a face that seemed to have just tasted something unpleasant. He suppressed his expression and said, "If you have nothing else, could you please keep your distance?"
His eyes indicated the space between them.
Guo Xiaojun was practically pressed against Jiang Qing and shamelessly leaned closer.
She took a step back, blushing as she looked at him. "I... I was just too scared."
Earlier, when she looked at Jiang Qing, he seemed like a pretty boy, but now that she took another look, she wondered how he could look so good. Were all city people this fair? If she became a city person, could she also become this fair?
"You might want to keep your distance," Jiang Qing said before turning away without looking at her again.
Guo Xiaojun's face flashed with embarrassment as she stomped her foot in anger and walked away.
She had been so eager to approach him, yet he dared to find her annoying; he truly didn’t know what he was missing. She would make him regret it sooner or later.
Aunt Tian and Wen Qian hit it off immediately and chatted enthusiastically.
During mealtime, Guo Xiaojun gritted her teeth and bought a lunch box to bring back. She walked over to Jiang Qing and handed it to him.
"Jiang Qing, I bought you some food; hurry up and eat! You must be hungry after such a long train ride!"
Jiang Qing looked at the lunch box forcefully placed in front of him, impatience flashing in his eyes as he pushed it back into Guo Xiaojun's hands.
"I don’t need you to buy me food; I have my own money for that. Just take care of yourself."
Guo Xiaojun looked at the lunchbox pushed into her hands, tears welling in her eyes as she gazed at Jiang Qing. "Is Jiang Zhi unwilling to forgive me? I truly know I was wrong; I really want to apologize to him."
Seeing her like this, Jiang Qing thought that if others saw it, they might think he was bullying her. He took a couple of steps back, creating more distance between them. "I’ve already said it; I don’t hold anything against you, so there’s no need for you to apologize."
After saying that, he asked Lu Zheng to keep an eye on the bed and then turned to leave.
Guo Xiaojun had long been salivating from the aroma of the lunchbox. Although she felt angry watching Jiang Qing walk away, there was also a sense of secret delight in her heart. He had eaten such an expensive lunchbox, and she felt a pang of heartache over it.
She didn’t have much money, and this lunchbox had cost her half of it, which made her feel quite distressed.
Opening the lunchbox, she began to eat, unable to stop due to its deliciousness. In such a big city, if train lunchboxes tasted this good, just imagine how much better the food at the elder sister's place must be!
Her gaze swept over Jiang Qing's bed, noticing the deep blue sheets laid out on it. A glint of determination flashed in her eyes. With a man like him, if she didn’t seize the opportunity, she would be letting herself down.
She glanced at Lu Zheng and Wen Qian, her eyes filled with regret as she looked at Lu Zheng. It was such a pity that such a handsome man had chosen someone as unattractive as his wife; even their child was not much to look at. What a waste!
Why hadn’t she discovered him sooner? If she had married him, their child would surely be fair and chubby.
What a shame! He was even a company commander, a rank higher than her brother-in-law's position. If she could marry him, even her elder sister would have to look up to her.
Noticing Wen Qian’s gaze directed at her, Guo Xiaojun shot her a fierce glare. That ugly woman—not only was she unattractive but also meddlesome. If it weren’t for her interference, how could Jiang Qing have such a poor impression of her?
If it weren’t for this woman, perhaps she would already be sweetly involved with Jiang Qing by now.
It was all her fault.
Wen Qian couldn’t help but find it amusing how oblivious Guo Xiaojun was to what was really happening. A naive girl who acted so arrogantly outside would eventually suffer for it.
Her pride was too high; she genuinely believed that it was because of Wen Qian that Jiang Qing hadn’t formed a good impression of her.
What Guo Xiaojun failed to see was just how annoyed Jiang Qing truly was with her.
Aunt Tian glanced at Guo Xiaojun and whispered to Wen Qian about the girl’s lack of self-respect and arrogance outside; who would want to indulge her? She really thought she was being pampered at home.
Wen Qian simply smiled without responding.
Wen Qian took out the pickled vegetables Meng Fang had given her and started eating them with the buns she bought. She even offered some to Aunt Tian, who took a bite and immediately loved them. "These pickled vegetables are delicious! Xiao Qian, your cooking skills are impressive! How did you make these? Teach me! I’ll make our local pickled vegetables for you too!"
Wen Qian smiled innocently and said, "Aunt Tian, this isn't my doing; it's my sister's. If you like it, I can give you the recipe. You can even make it with me; I've never done it before." She was eager to try but felt uncertain. Now that she had encountered an expert, she felt reassured.
Aunt Tian slapped her thigh and laughed heartily. "Alright, I'll teach you! I guarantee you'll learn quickly."
"Don't doubt me; I have a talent for cooking. My daughter-in-law loves my cooking so much that she married my son just for it!" As she spoke, Aunt Tian puffed out her chest proudly, looking like a peacock displaying its feathers.
Before Wen Qian could respond with a smile and a nod, a laugh interrupted them.
Guo Xiaojuan looked at Aunt Tian with amusement. "If your daughter-in-law loves your cooking so much, why didn't she marry you instead of your son? Doesn't that seem a bit off?"
Aunt Tian frowned at her. "Why does your mouth have to be so sharp? Can’t you keep quiet for once? I don’t like what you say."
"Why can't I speak? I'm just saying what I think!" Guo Xiaojuan became more animated as she spoke, wiping her mouth and standing up to look down at Aunt Tian.
Suddenly, her expression froze as she awkwardly glanced ahead.
Guo Xiaojuan noticed the conductor walking toward them, who had also observed the commotion and shot her a warning glance.
"Everyone quiet down! Don’t disturb others' rest."
"Okay, okay, I got it," Guo Xiaojuan replied sheepishly. After saying this, she quickly climbed up to the upper bunk. She lay there until the footsteps faded away before daring to peek out.
"Pfft! Hahaha!" Aunt Tian laughed joyfully, clutching her stomach in delight.
She whispered to Wen Qian, "That was hilarious! Just look at how timid she was earlier; she thought she could act tough in front of us. If it were up to me, I'd give her a taste of her own medicine; this journey would be unbearable otherwise."
When Jiang Qing returned, he spotted An Sheng lying on the upper bunk where Guo Xiaojuan had been. He let out a sigh of relief; he was thoroughly annoyed by that woman and had worried about being pestered again.
Guo Xiaojuan slowly fell asleep on the bed as the compartment remained quiet throughout the afternoon.
Lu Zheng had been urged by Wen Qian to get some sleep since he needed to keep watch at night and required sufficient rest.
Lu Chen was sleeping on the lower bunk while Wen Qian and Aunt Tian chatted softly beside him. They watched as Aunt Tian worked on some clothes—small garments indicating they were for her unborn grandchild.
Suddenly, a sharp sound pierced the air. "Where are my leather shoes? Where are my leather shoes?"
