She was determined to take her son away.
The room fell into silence, and just as Lu Zheng went to turn off the lights, Wen Qian's voice suddenly broke through the quiet.
"I'm sorry, I'll explain everything to our son tomorrow."
Lu Zheng turned to look at her, walking over to see her holding Xiao Chen, eyes closed in sleep, clearly not wanting to continue the conversation.
He sighed; it was better to let it go for now and explain tomorrow.
The night passed in silence, except for some sounds coming from the inner room; everything else was still. Many were unable to sleep that night.
In the morning, Wen Qian woke their son. They had only one day left to prepare for their train journey the next morning.
The three of them organized their things methodically. Every time Lu Zheng tried to talk to Wen Qian, she would turn and walk away or busy herself with other tasks.
Sometimes she would suggest he keep Xiao Chen company.
It seemed that they were not suited for too much conversation at this moment; it was better for them to remain calm. If things escalated into an argument, it would be Xiao Chen who suffered the most, and that was the last thing she wanted to see.
Some items still needed to be sent to the military unit. The train ride would be long, especially with Xiao Chen in tow; they should avoid bringing too much.
They took a bumpy ox cart into town and went to the post office to send their packages.
As they left, they passed by a hospital and saw Zhang Yan crying out loudly while Lu Yao sat beside her.
The two were causing a scene at the hospital entrance, surrounded by onlookers.
"Oh my God! We can't go on living like this! A big hospital like this is bullying us! We lost our money, and they even kicked us out—are they trying to kill us?"
"Look at how badly my man's leg is hurt; that was our lifeline!"
Lu Yao's face turned red as he awkwardly nodded in agreement.
"They stole our money and heartlessly threw us out! Who can afford this hospital anymore?"
People gathered around them, pointing and whispering among themselves.
"Is this for real? I’ve never heard of such things happening in a hospital before!"
"Yeah! This can't be a scam by the hospital, right?"
Zhang Yan immediately grabbed the woman's hand, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Sister, you can't just say whatever you want! It’s the people in the hospital who stole our money, and they’re covering for the thief. Isn’t that putting our lives at risk?"
"W-What are you doing? Let go!" The woman pushed her arm back, looking at Zhang Yan as if she were crazy.
"Look at my husband; he can’t even move! I’m not scamming the hospital for any money. You try breaking your man's legs and see how it goes! I rely on my husband to earn a living!"
"Have you never lost money in a hospital? Maybe it was the hospital that stole it. If everyone joins me, we might just get something back!"
"Everyone, come and see! The hospital is robbing us!"
The atmosphere among the crowd shifted. They looked at Zhang Yan, some of them starting to stir with agitation.
Those who had also lost money in hospitals began to chime in.
"My family lost money too; they never found the thief. It could very well be the hospital that took it!"
"We lost quite a bit as well!"
Some opportunists joined in, and as the noise grew louder, more people gathered around.
The hospital staff were starting to have problems with this uproar.
Wen Qian and Lu Zheng stood under a tree across from them, observing the scene.
Out of the corner of her eye, Wen Qian spotted police officers approaching. There was no way the hospital would tolerate this disturbance for long.
"What are they making such a fuss about? If they keep causing trouble outside the hospital, how will we save lives?"
Seeing the police arrive, the crowd quickly dispersed, some running away in fear.
As the officers moved into the center of the crowd, they immediately recognized Zhang Yan and Lu Yao.
These two familiar faces stood out to them, especially Lu Yao, who looked particularly recognizable.
"Why is it still you two? What trouble have you gotten into this time?"
Zhang Yan shrank back in fear upon seeing the police, hiding behind Lu Yao. The memory of being interrogated by them was still fresh in her mind, and she felt a twinge of fear at their presence.
"Come on, what’s going on now? Why are you hiding?"
"I... we lost our money! The hospital stole it from us, and they even kicked us out! My husband's leg isn't healed yet!"
As Zhang Yan spoke, her voice grew more and more assertive. She stepped outside and pointed at the hospital's entrance, accusing them. "Officer, you have to help us! We have no power or influence, and we are being driven to desperation!"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she continued, bouncing on her feet until the soles of her shoes were nearly worn out. "It's so hard for our family to earn a little money. Officer, you know our situation. Both my sons are missing, and now we've lost our money. How am I supposed to live?"
She collapsed onto the ground, throwing a tantrum, her hair disheveled as she wailed, "Oh my God! I can't go on living! I can't live like this! Help me!"
The police officer frowned at her distress and glanced around at the growing commotion. He raised his voice to stop her. "Enough crying! If you want to cry, come with us to the police station; don't disturb others here."
Another officer went into the hospital to find the person in charge to accompany them to the police station. This matter was serious now that it involved the hospital.
The person who came was the head nurse, who was fully aware of what had transpired. As soon as Zhang Yan saw her emerge, she stood up and lunged at her. "You sheltered the fraud and stole my money! You kicked us out of the hospital! If anything happens to my husband, you must compensate us!"
The head nurse stepped back slightly, looking at the frantic Zhang Yan with a cold smile. "How dare you slander us here and tarnish our hospital's reputation?"
"Listen to me," she continued, addressing the crowd. "Let me explain clearly so that no one misunderstands our hospital's integrity. Our hospital is state-run and serves the people; we cannot let unfounded accusations ruin our reputation."
"This woman came to the nurse's station early this morning claiming she couldn't find her money. We all helped her search for it but found nothing after a long time. Now she accuses us of stealing it."
"If it weren't for other patients witnessing this, we nurses would be wrongfully accused! We haven't even cried over this yet, and she's preventing us from leaving, insisting that we stole from her and even tearing a young girl's clothes in the process."
"How can we tolerate such behavior?"
