"Mother, I don't know which village he is from, but I can definitely say he is from the neighboring village."
Ding Cuiying was so exasperated that she couldn't help but laugh. She couldn't hold back any longer and directly pulled Zhang Yan's hair. "Are you kidding me? The neighboring village? Why don't you say he's from the city then!"
There were several villages next to theirs, so her statement was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Especially since they were looking for someone whose identity was unknown, only that he existed.
"Mother, please stop pulling my hair!"
"We don't need to reveal who he is; we just need to let Lu Zheng know that such a person exists. He will definitely be able to pry the information out of Wen Qian."
Ding Cuiying suddenly let go of her grip. Upon careful thought, she realized there was some truth to what Zhang Yan said! Lu Zheng had been in the military for so long; he must have some skills to reach his current position. Extracting information from a rural woman like Wen Qian would be an easy task for him.
When the time came, whatever Wen Qian might drunkenly reveal would be beyond their control. The more she said, the better; this way, the conflict could escalate further.
Ding Cuiying's mind was suddenly flooded with various ideas, and she couldn't help but laugh excitedly. She looked at Zhang Yan and said, "You are somewhat useful after all."
Lu Yao spoke up in confusion, "For a while now, someone has been secretly undermining me, preventing me from bullying Wen Qian and that little bastard. I wondered who it could be; it seems it must be that scoundrel."
Lu Yao's eyes burned with anger. He had been beaten countless times recently and couldn't even tell anyone about it. If he did, how could he still show his face?
Moreover, his reasons for going out were not justified either. The widow from the neighboring village had already lost interest in him; now that he thought about it, it made his heart itch.
But it was just an itch in his heart.
After dinner, they originally planned to take a nap, but due to Lu Chen's excitement, the whole family ended up not resting.
During dinner, Lu Zheng had already promised Lu Chen that he would take him to the village later.
Wen Qian took out some fruit candies she had bought and filled Lu Chen's small pocket with them.
Lu Chen quickly stopped her, saying anxiously, "Mom, that's too much! I won't need this many; I only have two friends."
He counted on his fingers seriously as he told Wen Qian about Xiao Gang from Grandma Ying's house and Xiao Bao from the village chief's house. "Just give each of them two; it's enough. Mom works hard to earn money."
"Alright then, Xiao Chen decides. Mom will listen to you."
However, Wen Qian still packed a few extra candies under the pretense that he would want some too.
Wen Qian never expected that among so many children in the village, he only had two friends—just two!
As they set out, Lu Zheng lifted Lu Chen by the armpits and placed him on his shoulders. Lu Chen felt a bit scared and quickly wrapped his arms tightly around his father's head, feeling the prickly hair beneath his hands, looking helplessly at Wen Qian.
"Mom!"
In an instant, his fear transformed into amazement. "Mom, I’m so tall now! Mom, I’ve grown taller!"
He excitedly looked around and then glanced down at Wen Qian. "I’m taller than Mom! I’m taller than Dad too! Ah! Mom, I’m so tall!"
For Lu Chen, this was a completely new and thrilling experience. He wanted to jump with excitement but held back, thinking that if he bounced too much, he might hurt Dad. He finally understood what this feeling was like.
In the past, he could only envy other kids sitting on their fathers' shoulders, suddenly towering over everyone else. He had to tilt his head back just to see them. Now, he was tall too—taller than anyone else, with his dad being the tallest of all.
"Dad..."
The father and son strode confidently out of the yard. Lu Zheng returned with Xiao Chen and leaned closer to Wen Qian, lowering his voice playfully, "Where’s my candy, hmm?"
He raised an eyebrow, a smile dancing in his eyes as he looked at Wen Qian. They were so close that she could feel the warmth radiating from his face. She turned her head to avoid his gaze and quickly pulled two pieces of candy from her pocket, handing them to him. "Here you go, hurry up!"
Lu Zheng chuckled softly before leisurely responding, "Xiao Chen is teasing me—Dad’s shy and asking Mom for candy."
"Well, the candy from Mom is sweet."
His amused voice made her feel a bit embarrassed.
Wen Qian stood at the door of their thatched cottage, watching them leave with a heart full of joy and a smile that radiated happiness.
"Hmph, what are you so proud of? Sooner or later, others will know your true colors."
Wen Qian turned towards the voice and saw Zhang Yan glaring at her like a crazed lunatic. Zhang Yan had just witnessed their family’s happy scene and was consumed by jealousy.
"You shameless woman! It should be our family of four living happily together! You and your little bastard should both die—just die!"
Why did her two children have to suffer while that shameless woman's child thrived? Why?
Jealousy drove her mad as Zhang Yan slowly approached Wen Qian, unable to hold back her words any longer. "You shameless woman! Do you think if Lu Zheng knew you were cheating on him, he would still treat you like this?"
"Stealing a man?" The accusation hung over her like a cloud, and Wen Qian looked at Zhang Yan with a mix of confusion and amusement.
"Don't think I haven't seen that man helping you out, even paying you," Zhang Yan said, her pride swelling as she regarded Wen Qian. She had felt a twinge of regret when she first spoke those words, but now, seeing the look on Wen Qian's face, the pain that had consumed her seemed to fade away, replaced by a rush of exhilaration.
So what if it was true? She had stolen a man.
A figure flashed in her mind. It was Yang Tong; it was him.
Wen Qian's eyes widened in surprise, not expecting Zhang Yan to have figured it out.
Zhang Yan's expression grew even more smug. "Remember? You two are nothing but a pair of adulterers. Just wait until Lu Zheng comes back; you'll be in for it!"
Wen Qian found Zhang Yan's delight unsettling; such an expression did not belong on her face.
"I have something to tell you that you definitely want to know," she said softly.
"What?" Zhang Yan felt a chill run down her spine, sensing that this was not going to be good news. She took a couple of steps back, fear creeping into her eyes.
Wen Qian advanced two steps closer, forcing Zhang Yan to retreat until her back hit the wall, leaving her with nowhere to go. Now terrified, she looked up at Wen Qian.
She swallowed hard and stammered, "What do you want to say?"
"Do you want to know why your son was kidnapped?"
Wen Qian watched as Zhang Yan's eyes widened in shock, a smile creeping onto her lips as she continued, "You're right; that's exactly it!"
Zhang Yan grabbed Wen Qian's wrist with desperation, her eyes bloodshot and trembling. "Say it again! It’s really you; it’s really you!"
"Yes, it's me. I merely returned the gift you gave me; I turned it down."
With that, Wen Qian twisted her wrist free from Zhang Yan's grip and looked at the woman crumpled against the wall in despair, finding it all utterly ridiculous.
Now that the whip had struck her back, she finally understood pain!
Wen Qian couldn't be bothered with her any longer and walked back into the house.
Thoughts of Yang Tong filled her mind. He was a good man.
