They returned home and handed the car back to the village chief. In private, Lu Zheng discreetly gave the village chief two packs of cigarettes and a pound of brown sugar. The village chief initially refused, but under Lu Zheng and Wen Qian's insistence, he reluctantly accepted them.
"Ah, you two kids are too polite. I have plenty of these things. You can take the car whenever you want. That pack of peach pastries this morning was already quite a treat," he said.
Wen Qian suppressed her amusement, pretending not to notice the excitement in the village chief's wife's eyes as she saw the brown sugar. She pushed the brown sugar into the village chief's wife's arms, saying, "Auntie, please accept this! My sister-in-law just had a baby and really needs brown sugar to recover! You should take it!"
The village chief's wife smiled gratefully. "Xiao Qian, I don’t even know how to thank you. Your sister-in-law truly needs this brown sugar; we’ve been at our wits' end trying to figure out how to help! You really hit the nail on the head."
She held Wen Qian's hand and patted it with emotion, saying nothing more. "If you ever need anything from me, just let me know. I’ll definitely help you."
Wen Qian declined the village chief's wife's offer to send them off and slowly walked home. They were still waiting for Lu Yao to return and turn everything upside down!
Lu Yao usually got drunk quickly when he drank, but he also sobered up just as fast. However, he had a peculiar complication that came with drinking. She couldn’t even imagine how lively the Lu household would be in a little while.
At that moment, in the woods, Lu Yao felt an itch at his nose as he dozed off. Annoyed, he raised his hand to scratch it, but the itch persisted. Slowly opening his eyes, he saw a furry object and widened his eyes in shock, realizing it was a man gnawing on him while nearly stripping off his clothes.
Panicking, he pushed the man away with all his strength. Looking at the filthy state of the man and the foul odor emanating from him made him cover his mouth and gag.
The crazy man became even more excited upon seeing Lu Yao awake. He laughed loudly and shouted, "Tasty! I want more!" With that, he lunged toward Lu Yao again.
Lu Yao's eyes widened in alarm as he hurriedly backed away, clutching his aching chest while feeling furious at the bite marks on his skin that turned his face red with anger.
"Damn it, you lunatic!"
He grimaced at the stench coming from himself—had he been taken advantage of by this man? He picked up a stick from under the tree and swung it at the crazy man, shouting, "You crazy bastard! How dare you take advantage of me? I'll kill you! I'll kill you!"
From a distance, it looked like one naked man was chasing another in what seemed like a bizarre flirtation. Although the crazy man was indeed mad, he was also sensible enough to flee when he saw Lu Yao’s fierce demeanor. As he ran away, he glanced back longingly and licked his lips as if still savoring something.
Lu Yao sat up straight, shaken as he watched the crazy man disappear into the distance. He slumped down helplessly on the ground, staring at the marks left on the mountain and feeling a chill run through him.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain at the corner of his mouth. Raising his hand to touch it, he discovered blood on his fingertips. A flash of realization struck him—could it be that crazy man had bitten him?
He covered his chin and vomited, all the food he had just managed to eat now expelled. After resting for a while, he looked around and realized he was halfway home. Waking up from his drunken stupor, his head felt heavy. He slapped his temples hard, hoping to clear his mind.
Just as he was about to stand up, his gaze fell to his lap. Suddenly, he froze in place, momentarily forgetting the dizziness. He quickly rummaged through the pockets of his clothes nearby but found them empty—not a single cent remained.
Where's my money? Where did it go?
He squatted down to check the area but found nothing. He even sifted through the grass but still saw no sign of it. The first thought that flashed through his mind was: Did that man take my money?
That crazy man: I’m really broke; I just want to have fun, not steal money!
But he had seen the man run away—he didn’t have any money on him; his clothes were so torn they didn’t even have pockets. This meant someone else must have picked up his money or taken it while he was asleep.
In an instant, countless possibilities raced through his mind, but they all led to one conclusion: he was doomed. If his father found out the money was gone, he would be in serious trouble.
Lu Yao felt like crying but quickly sat down on the ground. However, he knew he had to hurry home; otherwise, the consequences would be even worse.
He put on his clothes and dragged his heavy feet toward home, only to run into Wen Qian as she stepped out of the thatched hut. He looked up and met her gaze, sensing a hint of mockery in her eyes.
Lu Yao wanted to rush over and ask her if she had seen his money, but when he noticed Lu Zheng standing behind her, all thoughts vanished in an instant.
Cui Zui hurriedly walked out of the house again to see if Lu Yao had arrived. She spotted him standing in the yard without entering the house.
Frustrated and unable to contain her anger, she slapped Lu Yao on the back. "You foolish child! Why didn’t you say anything when you got here? Come inside! Don’t you know your father and I have been waiting for you anxiously?"
After saying this, she pulled Lu Yao toward the house while anxiously saying, "Hurry up and get inside and bring out the money! Your father and I are in a rush to find someone for business! Don’t delay important matters!"
Just as Lu Yao was about to step into the house, he suddenly stopped in his tracks, hesitating to take another step inside.
"What’s wrong with you? Why do you seem so off?" Cui Zui glared at Lu Yao. Suddenly, she leaned closer and sniffed him, unable to help but frown.
"How could you drink again? At such a critical moment! What’s wrong with you? If your father finds out, he'll definitely scold you."
"Forget it; if you’ve drunk, you’ve drunk. Your father knows you've been feeling down lately; he won’t blame you. Now hurry up and come inside."
Lu Yaocui was dragged into the room, his head lowered, not daring to look at Lu.
Lu frowned at his demeanor and said in a deep voice, "Where's the money? Hurry up and take it out."
"Money, money, I... money!"
"I asked you where the money is!" Lu looked at him hesitantly, a suspicion flashing through his mind. He picked up a pillow nearby and threw it at him, raising his voice.
Lu Yao knelt on the ground, unable to hold back his tears, shouting loudly, "Dad, I... I lost the lunch money! Someone robbed me! It was taken from me!"
"Dad, it's really not my fault! I was just walking out of the post office when it happened. They must have colluded inside the post office to steal my money!"
"Dad, I'm telling the truth! You have to believe me! I really don't know; I didn't do it on purpose."
As he spoke, Lu Yao's tone turned accusatory. "I told you not to withdraw all of it! Just take out enough for what I need! If I had done that, I wouldn't have gotten robbed!"
"I didn't want to get robbed either! It's all your fault! If you hadn't insisted that I withdraw all the money, I wouldn't have been robbed or beaten up!"
Cui Zong watched Lu's face darken like a pot bottom, her heart racing with fear. Looking at Lu Yao still complaining on the ground, she couldn't help but reach out to pat him.
"What nonsense are you talking about? Stop saying that!"
Lu Yao pushed Cui Zong away with such force that she nearly fell to the ground. "Why can't I say it? I'm just saying what happened! Why shouldn't I? If you hadn't forced me to withdraw the money, I wouldn't have been beaten or robbed! How can you blame me? Have you thought about your own faults?"
"Who are you showing that black face to? I'm not afraid of you! I'm just speaking the truth; who dares to hit me?"
Lu Yao pointed disdainfully at Lu, a smirk playing on his lips.
Cui Zong stood trembling in fear beside him, wishing she could swallow Lu Yao whole and start over.
Lu Yao picked up a nearby stool and slammed it onto the floor, glaring at Lu with undisguised contempt as he swayed unsteadily. "You always talk big; when have you ever followed through? You said everything would be mine after you were gone, but look at me now! I'm practically being killed here!"
"After being clever all my life, I can't even protect my own grandson—it's truly ridiculous."
"And what about this fortune you promised me? How come I've never seen a single cent? It's worthless!"
