Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be the dog from Aunt Zheng's house. In a fit of anger, he immediately raised his foot to kick it, but unexpectedly, the dog bit his leg, causing him to scream in pain.
Hearing the commotion, the people from Aunt Zheng's house quickly got up and came out with wooden sticks. They grabbed Lu Yao and began to beat him. "You dog thief! I’ll make sure you regret trying to steal my dog!" Aunt Zheng's son struck with force, and Lu Yao tried to escape in every direction, but he was held by his clothes and couldn't get away.
"It's me! It's me! I'm Lu Yao! You've got the wrong person!" But before he could finish speaking, he was knocked unconscious. Afterward, Aunt Zheng's son tied him up and stuffed him into the dog pen.
He patted the dog's head and said, "Keep an eye on him; don't let him escape." The big yellow dog wagged its tail and turned around, sitting right on Lu Yao's face, proudly lifting its head.
Lu Yao woke up to a foul smell. His face felt wet and warm, and as he opened his eyes, he saw a lump of black and yellow matter right in front of him. Upon closer inspection, he suddenly wanted to stand up, but as soon as he moved, he lost his balance and fell flat on the ground.
"Ah!" He felt a sticky sensation on his face and quickly bit his lip to keep the mess from entering his mouth. Lu Yao continued to struggle; not only did he fail to stand up, but the mess also spread evenly across his face.
"Woof! Woof! Woof!" The big yellow dog was awakened by the noise and barked impatiently at Lu Yao. It had just settled down after finishing its business when Lu Yao disturbed it. Seeing its own mess being pressed against Lu Yao's face made it snarl.
Not seeing any reaction from Lu Yao, the dog thought it had lost its intimidation power. It crouched down and barked a few more times before lunging at Lu Yao to bite him.
Lying on the ground, Lu Yao felt himself being bitten. He wanted to struggle but found himself powerless; he tried to shout and drive the dog away but couldn’t open his mouth.
The dog's barking continued, gradually waking up the sleeping people inside the house. "Big Yellow, what are you barking about? Isn’t it too early for this?"
Big Yellow was Aunt Zheng's alarm clock, waking them up every day right on time. Aunt Zheng's son walked out irritably, his eyes barely open. When he squinted at the scene before him, his eyes widened in shock.
"Big Yellow, what are you doing?"
Big Yellow released its grip and walked over to him, rubbing against his leg in a pitiful manner while barking at Lu Yao. Aunt Zheng's son looked down at the man sprawled on the ground who was eating Big Yellow's mess with disdain but was too afraid of being reprimanded to do anything more than pull him up by the arm.
"If you wanted a taste, you could have just asked! Was it really necessary to do this?"
Suddenly realizing something, Aunt Zheng's son stared at the man who hadn’t yet been pulled up. "You didn’t steal Big Yellow just for this reason, did you? That’s quite a peculiar hobby!"
Lu Yao wanted to explain but felt that there was too much in his mouth and forced himself not to speak. As he was pulled up, his face was a sight to behold; Aunt Zheng's son didn’t recognize him either. Looking at the thick mess on the ground, he couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
"What a waste of good fertilizer," he thought. "Mother would definitely scold me if she knew."
He glanced at the sky; it was about time for everyone to get up—the rooftops in the village were already puffing smoke from early risers. Aunt Zheng's son licked his lips and rubbed his stomach; he was hungry too—his mother should be getting up soon to cook breakfast.
He looked at Lu Yao with sympathy. Well, it was no wonder he had this habit; it was easy to get hungry early in the morning and late at night. He understood!
At the Lu family home, Ding Cuiying woke up only to find that Lu Yao was missing from the house. Something was off! Her son definitely wouldn’t be up at this hour. She shook her husband, who was still asleep beside her. "Old man, old man, our son is gone! What’s going on?"
Last night, her husband had been so enraged by Wen Qian that he had spat blood and fainted again. With the experience from the previous two times, Ding Cuiying pressed down hard on her husband's acupoint. She watched as he remained unconscious, gritting her teeth and applying more pressure. To her surprise, she actually managed to wake him up.
At that moment, she had been so focused on her husband that she completely forgot about Lu Yao. When Lu Fu woke up, they both cried for a while before cursing at the thatched house and falling asleep again. Little did they know their son was missing.
Lu Fu propped himself up and indeed didn’t see any sign of his son. Weakly, he looked at the anxious Ding Cuiying and said, "Check the latrine; maybe he’s in there."
"Right, right! He must have gone to the latrine!" Ding Cuiying hurriedly got out of bed, barely putting on her shoes before rushing outside. She made her way to the latrine in one breath and didn’t care about the propriety of gender; she barged right in.
However, there wasn’t a single person there. She ran back and exclaimed, "Old man, he’s not there!"
Now Lu Fu couldn’t sit still either; he remembered what had happened last night. Lu Yao must have been harmed by Lu Zheng! Shivering with fear, he let Ding Cuiying help him outside.
Clap! Clap! Clap!
Lu Zheng woke up and opened his eyes to meet Wen Qian’s gaze. She patted Lu Chen’s back as Lu Zheng walked outside.
As soon as he opened the door, Ding Cuiying shouted loudly, "Where's Lu Yao? What have you done with my son? Bring him out now!"
Having been woken up and now being shouted at at the door, anger radiated from Lu Zheng. Seeing his expression made Ding Cuiying instinctively step back behind Lu Fu.
Lu Fu coughed a few times, breathing weakly as he asked, "Lu Zheng, where is Lu Yao?"
"I don’t know," Lu Zheng replied curtly before shutting the door directly.
Ding Cuiying wanted to bang on the door again but was stopped by Lu Fu. He narrowed his eyes at the door of the thatched house. He understood Lu Zheng; although he was ruthless, he wouldn’t lie. Lu Zheng was someone who would take responsibility for his actions—this much he knew.
At that moment, Aunt Sheng's voice rang out loudly, "You thief! How dare you come steal my dog and even eat Da Huang’s feces? You’re asking for death!"
"Everyone come look! This person is trying to steal my Da Huang—taking it away while eating!"
Aunt Sheng's loud voice quickly attracted a crowd. The villagers were still half-asleep but rushed over as soon as they heard commotion.
Someone curiously asked, "Who is this? I can’t see clearly!"
"Is he awake? Why isn’t he saying anything?"
Someone chuckled and said, "Someone help wipe his mouth; otherwise how can he talk?"
Aunt Sheng pointed at her son standing beside her with a meaningful glance.
The son of Aunt Ying disdainfully picked up a leaf from the ground, closed his eyes, and wiped Lu Yao's mouth, only to toss it aside in disgust afterward.
"Come on, speak up. I've cleaned your mouth for you," he said.
Lu's father and Ding Cuiying slowly approached, curiously gathering around. Even before they could see anyone, they heard their son's voice.
"Aunt, I'm not a dog thief! I'm Lu Yao! Aunt!"
As Lu Yao spoke, he began to cry in grievance. "I'm not a dog thief! I didn't eat dog poop! I'm being wronged!"
He opened his mouth wide as he cried, tears streaming down his face. The murky tears flowed into his mouth, and after tasting them, he immediately spat them out.
Ding Cuiying had rushed over the moment she heard Lu Yao's voice. Seeing her son tied up and kneeling on the ground, her heart ached terribly.
"My child, how did you end up like this!"
She tugged at the ropes but couldn't break free. Turning to glare at Aunt Ying, she shouted, "You old hag! How dare you bully my son and tie him up? I'll fight you!"
"Hey, you dare to curse me? I've been wanting to deal with you for a long time!"
Aunt Ying rolled up her sleeves and started fighting with Ding Cuiying. With all her strength, she pushed Ding Cuiying down to the ground.
Aunt Ying sat directly on Ding Cuiying's body and began slapping her left and right.
"You are the real old hag! You're not even human! I've wanted to take care of you for ages. You should know your own weight before provoking me."
Early in the morning, Aunt Ying was already fired up, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
The villagers gathered around to watch the spectacle, but no one stepped in to stop it. After all, Aunt Ying's fighting ability was extraordinary; no one wanted to get caught in the crossfire. Besides, it wasn't worth offending Aunt Ying just to help Ding Cuiying.
Lu's father was anxious, stomping his feet on the ground. Given his current condition, he didn't dare intervene; one slap from Aunt Ying could very well kill him.
"Auntie, please stop! Your sister-in-law knows she's wrong!"
As Wen Qian and Lu Zheng walked by, they were met with this scene. Even Wen Qian couldn't help but squint in disbelief.
Aunt Ying was indeed formidable; she had one hand pinning down Ding Cuiying's arms while using the other hand to strike.
Wen Qian felt someone push her from behind twice forcefully, shoving her into the crowd where many eyes turned toward her.
She turned around and saw the woman who had pushed her looking at her with mockery.
"Lu Zheng's family! Your mother-in-law is being bullied like this—why aren't you helping? Why are you so cowardly?"
