Liu Ge suddenly opened his eyes in pain, screaming repeatedly.
Ah!
He felt a sharp pain in his right wrist, as if it had been severed.
When he met Lu Zheng's gaze, he trembled all over. Lu Zheng's dark eyes were fixed on him, and Liu Ge noticed the murderous intent within them.
Fearful, Liu Ge tried to move back, but his feet were bound, leaving him unable to escape. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead as he stammered, "Brother, I-I didn’t mean it. I was tricked by your brother; you have to believe me. Let me go, and I’ll do whatever you say."
His left hand clutched the severed wrist of his right arm, grimacing in pain while fearfully gazing at the man before him, who looked like a god of death.
Though it was night, Liu Ge could see clearly; he could make out Lu Zheng's expressionless face and the murderous glint in his eyes, along with the small object spinning in his hand.
"Brother, I beg you, don’t kill me! I have an eighty-year-old mother to take care of; if I die, she won’t survive either."
"Brother, you were a soldier, right? Just spare me this once! I promise I’ll turn over a new leaf."
Liu Ge continued to inch backward, noticing several of Lu Zheng's brothers behind him. Nervously swallowing hard, he bit his lip and looked at Lu Zheng with a pleading expression.
"If you're worried they’ll leak anything, I can help you take care of them. Don’t worry; I won’t let a drop of blood touch you; this has nothing to do with you."
His mouth was running dry as he spoke, realizing that Lu Zheng remained expressionless. His breathing quickened as tears threatened to spill.
"Brother, please! I have money in my pocket—money! You can take it all!"
As he spoke, without needing Lu Zheng to act, he began pulling out the cash himself and handed it over eagerly.
"Brother, I’m not lying; it’s all money."
He rushed to prove how much money there was but couldn’t stand up properly. He raised his hand to throw the cash at Lu Zheng.
In that instant, he saw a hand appear before him. Liu Ge looked at Lu Zheng in surprise and excitement: "Brother, it’s all for you! You can trust me; I haven’t hidden anything."
Lu Zheng took the money and stuffed it into his pocket while continuing to look at Liu Ge with an impassive expression. The small object in his hand spun even faster now.
Liu Ge stared blankly at him—this wasn’t how things were supposed to go! If Lu Zheng accepted his money, shouldn’t he let him go?
Seeing that the time was nearly up, Lu Zheng parted his thin lips and coldly asked, "What did he come here for?"
Liu Ge only knew that Wen Qian was afraid of them; according to what Lu Yao had said in the yard, they were supposed to be here to buy Wen Qian.
"Brother, I made a deal with your brother—oh no, that bastard—he sold me a woman who can bear children; I bought her as a wife."
Liu Ge was trembling violently, his body shaking as sweat dripped down his forehead.
"Brother, it's really over, it's really over!"
Lu Zheng slowly approached him, continuing to ask, "What were you planning to do by breaking in? Tell me, and I can guarantee your safety."
Liu Ge kept leaning back, gritting his teeth. In a moment of desperation, he spilled everything. "He... he said there was a beautiful woman in the house, and several thousand dollars. He wanted us to rob it. We thought we wouldn't lose anything, so we were tempted."
"Brother, if we had known it was you, even if it meant death, we wouldn't have dared to rob! I was blinded by greed; please spare me this once!"
Liu Ge noticed Lu Zheng's gaze suddenly shift behind him. His eyes narrowed, and his left hand struck out swiftly.
"Ah!"
A chilling scream echoed from halfway up the mountain, reverberating through the area and startling small animals into fleeing with rustling sounds; occasionally, wolf howls pierced the night.
Liu Ge wanted to roll over in pain but could only lie on the ground, trembling uncontrollably. He looked at his severed left hand, veins bulging on his forehead, his face turning a deep shade of purple. His bloodshot eyes glared fiercely at Lu Zheng.
In a fit of rage, he struggled to speak through gritted teeth. "You've already taken my money; I've told you everything. You're going back on your word."
"I only promised to spare your life; I made no guarantees beyond that."
Lu Zheng stood tall above him, memories of Wen Qian in the thatched cottage flooding his mind—her terrified embrace around his waist as she trembled in fear. He raised his hand and gently touched the fabric of his abdomen where her tears had stained it.
Liu Ge lay on the ground in despair and hatred, spitting at Lu Zheng with contempt.
Suddenly, he burst into laughter. "You kill us, but you won't find peace either! You think you can escape? You should give up being a soldier and become a beggar instead!"
Lu Zheng ignored him and moved to the others, methodically delivering the same fate to Liu Ge's subordinates.
The others were jolted awake by the pain, their cries of anguish filling the air as they looked at Lu Zheng in terror and begged for mercy.
"Big brother, please spare us! We're begging you!"
Lu Zheng crouched down in front of one of Liu Ge's men and grasped his shoulder tightly. The sound of cracking bones filled the air along with the man's hoarse cries of shock.
After massaging his shoulder, Lu Zheng's large hand slowly moved down to the man's ankle. The man struggled in fear, desperately trying to break free.
"You're crazy! Let me go, let me go!" The man screamed in terror, feeling numbness spreading through his upper body.
Suddenly, a louder scream pierced the air.
Lu Zheng frowned in annoyance at him and coldly uttered two words: "Noisy!"
With that, he swiftly acted while the man was still screaming. In an instant, the man's cries ceased, leaving the others biting their lips in fear as they watched Lu Zheng.
The first man looked up at Lu Zheng in despair as he rose to his feet. He felt completely numb, except for the dampness beneath him. His tendons and ligaments had been severed; his arms were broken, his legs shattered, and now even his tongue was gone.
Lu Zheng slowly approached another man. The man watched Lu Zheng's advancing figure, struggling to retreat, but not daring to make a sound for fear of losing his tongue as well.
Suddenly, howls echoed from the mountains, accompanied by various animal sounds that filled the air.
The man’s legs turned to jelly at the thought of wolves—there were real wolves out there. He thought he even heard the hissing of snakes.
He looked at Lu Zheng, pleading, "Brother, you need to hurry. If you don't act now, you won't make it either."
He gazed at Lu Zheng with hope, wishing he would heed his advice so he could save his own life. Everyone fears death; he couldn't believe Lu Zheng was unafraid of it.
As the howls grew closer and the commotion on the mountain intensified, he noticed a flicker of emotion on Lu Zheng's face and urged him more urgently, "Brother, you have a wife and children waiting for you. What will happen to them if you die? Hurry!"
