The next day, they woke up early and headed to the city. Along the way, Wen Qian had never felt the air here to be so fresh and clean. A faint smile graced her lips as the three of them arrived at the state-run hotel for breakfast before eagerly making their way to the post office to make a phone call.
Wen Qian chatted with the lady at the post office while Lu Chen stood by. The lady kept glancing in Lu Zheng's direction and nudged Wen Qian, saying, "Sister, you’re quite lucky! Your man is so handsome and earns well. How can you let him be out there all alone?"
"He wouldn’t dare!" Wen Qian replied playfully.
"Oh really? Then your man must cherish you a lot!"
Wen Qian smiled without saying much and looked at her. "Sister, I might not be able to swap tickets with you anymore; I’ll be following him with the army."
"Well, that’s fine!" The lady sighed but then smiled at Wen Qian with a look full of affection. "Though it’s a bit of a pity, I’m still happy for you and my nephew. Over these years, I’ve seen how hard you’ve had it. Let’s go live a good life."
Wen Qian looked at her gratefully. "Sister!"
The lady at the post office had helped take care of them over the years, and although part of it was for ticket exchanges, her willingness to help was a kindness that Wen Qian appreciated deeply. In her previous life, this lady had often advised her, but she had been stubborn and refused to listen.
Despite encountering many villains in the Lu family in her past life, she had also met many good people.
The lady wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye. "Alright, let’s not dwell on sad things; let’s talk about happy matters instead." She looked at Wen Qian and Lu Chen. After four years together, she had come to see Wen Qian as a friend and sister.
"You should take care of yourself while following your man. You look older than I do! And maybe have a child with him to keep Xiao Chen company so he won’t be lonely."
Wen Qian nodded along with the first part of what she said, but when it came to the latter half, she suddenly froze and couldn’t move her head. She forced a smile and replied, "Okay, Sister, we understand."
Just then, she saw Lu Zheng finish his call and walk over. Wen Qian quickly pulled Lu Chen along to bid farewell to the lady. She feared that if they lingered any longer, the lady would start suggesting names for their future child.
"Are we done?" Wen Qian asked Lu Zheng.
"Yes, the military will call the police station; we can go handle it directly."
The three of them arrived at the police station and first dealt with their household registration issues. This time, they truly became one family in every sense. After handling everything, Lu Zheng finally asked about Lu Yao and Zhang Yan's situation.
When do you think they will be back?
The police officer pondered for a moment and replied that everything should be wrapped up by noon, and they could return in the afternoon. These two individuals were indeed victims; losing their child and having to cooperate with the police at the station was already a lot to bear. They deserved some reassurance.
Upon returning home, they noticed someone squatting at the entrance. As they approached, they realized it was Uncle Aiguo, one of the officials who had come to witness the events yesterday. Jiang Aiguo caught sight of Lu Zheng and the others, extinguishing his cigarette on the ground before standing up and smiling at them.
"Back already?"
"Yes, Uncle Aiguo, were you waiting for us?"
"Yes, yes."
Wen Qian pushed open the door and smiled at him, "Let’s go inside to talk. Standing out here will make the villagers think something’s wrong!"
"Alright, alright, let’s go in."
Seeing Uncle Aiguo's demeanor, Lu Zheng understood why he had come. As they entered the yard, they bumped into Cui Zhuang, who had just arrived. She looked at Wen Qian and the others about to head inside and quickly asked, "Did you go to the police station?"
Wen Qian paused and replied calmly, "We did; they’ll be back this afternoon."
At least they managed to keep quiet about how the traffickers were connected to them, avoiding a disaster that could have slowed down the police investigation and diminished hopes of finding the two children.
Cui Zhuang stomped her feet in excitement upon hearing this. "They’re coming back? That’s great news!"
Inside the house, once everyone was seated together, an unexpected silence fell over them. Wen Qian looked at Jiang Aiguo and smiled, "Uncle Aiguo must be here about the house issue!"
Jiang Aiguo chuckled awkwardly. "Well, yes, Xiao Qian. I came for that reason. Don’t blame me for coming so suddenly; I didn’t mean to rush you."
He sighed deeply. "You know you’re not getting any younger; it’s time to settle down. You just need a house now. I heard about what happened yesterday at your place, so I gathered my courage to ask."
"I wanted to come earlier because I was worried that if this matter spread in the village, there wouldn’t be any opportunity left."
Wen Qian noticed Jiang Aiguo's discomfort and smiled gently to ease the atmosphere.
"Uncle, we all understand what you mean. It doesn't matter who we sell it to; since you came first, we'll sell it to you."
"Alright, alright! Just tell me a price, and I'll go home and get the money ready to bring over."
As he spoke, he was eager to rush out and grab the money, fearing that Wen Qian might change her mind.
"Uncle Aiguo, there's no rush. We can discuss this slowly; after all, we won't be leaving anytime soon."
Wen Qian looked at Uncle Aiguo and said softly, "Uncle Aiguo, do you want to separate the house in the middle and live here directly, or do you plan to move the bricks away?"
The room suddenly fell silent. Uncle Aiguo stared blankly at Wen Qian, not quite understanding her meaning.
She explained further, "When the house was built, it used mud, so the bricks can be removed intact. You can take them away and build a new house."
With this explanation, Uncle Aiguo's mind cleared up instantly. He awkwardly smiled, realizing he had been confused for a moment.
"Let's move and build! This is your family's homestead."
"Alright then, you can start moving this afternoon. Begin with the main house."
Suddenly, Wen Qian remembered the furniture in the main house and asked Uncle Aiguo, "Uncle, we also need to sell the furniture in the main house. Do you want it? It would be perfect for your new marriage."
Although it was a bit worn out from being used by Lu Yao and Zhang Yan for four years, it was still substantial furniture that hadn't been cheap when bought. Generally, farming families couldn't afford such items.
Now they could get it at a bargain; even though it was second-hand, with a little cleaning and tidying up, it would look just fine.
Uncle Aiguo seemed eager not to miss out and repeatedly agreed while looking gratefully at Wen Qian. "Yes, yes! Oh dear Qian, you've really helped me out here! I’ve been worried sick!"
"Your aunt has been almost driven mad at home these past few days. Tell me how I can thank you properly. At noon, I'll have your aunt prepare a chicken for you; I'll bring it over once it's done."
Seeing Uncle Aiguo getting more excited as he spoke made it seem like he would immediately go out and wring a chicken's neck if she mentioned it again.
