Mr. Lu wanted to buy it, but the money at home simply wouldn't allow it. Even if they had the funds, it would only be enough to cover the debts of Lu He and Lu Feng, still sitting in Lu Yao's pocket.
He sighed helplessly and coughed, saying, "If we’re not buying it, you all can figure it out yourselves!"
"Alright then."
Wen Qian continued to write, and after finishing, she handed the document to Mr. Lu for him to review. Mr. Lu was literate and could understand the contents.
As Mr. Lu read, Cuihua paced anxiously behind him. She couldn't make heads or tails of what was written and could only rely on the old man’s judgment. However, he seemed distracted; if there were any pitfalls in the document, they would surely miss them.
After reading, Mr. Lu passed the document back to Wen Qian, who bit her lip and handed it to the village chief and several other officials.
"Village Chief, please take a look. If everything is fine, we can sign."
The village chief was merely going through the motions and had always favored Wen Qian. Now that the Lu family had treated them like fools, he felt even more inclined to support her.
"Everything looks good; let’s sign!"
Three copies were made—one for each family and one for the village as a record.
Mr. Lu trembled as he signed his name, followed by Lu Zheng. The village chief and several officials also needed to sign as witnesses.
Once the signatures were done, Wen Qian began preparing another sheet of paper. She looked at the village chief and others and said, "Village Chief, we also need to sign an agreement to sever ties."
At that moment, the village chief and his companions straightened up, frowning seriously at Wen Qian.
This was no small matter; if word got out in their village, they would gain notoriety. How would other villages perceive them?
"Since I married Lu Zheng a few years ago, you all know how my life has been," she continued. "Each of us here understands that with how the Lu family has treated me, I can no longer continue to honor them as I should."
"Moreover," she added with a quiver in her voice, "this time when Lu He and Lu Feng were abducted, I learned from Zhang Yan that they initially intended to kidnap Xiao Chen. Village Chief, how could I possibly continue living with them?"
As she spoke, her eyes reddened. "Village Chief, esteemed officials present here—I should call you uncles or elders—ever since my parents passed away, my life has turned upside down. Sometimes I wish I could join them underground."
The village chief and several officials felt a pang of sympathy as they looked at Wen Qian. She was the only child of the Wen family; her parents had doted on her like a treasure. The young girl was not only beautiful but also eloquent; there was no one in the village who didn’t like her.
Now seeing her in such distress made them forget what she had been like just a few years ago.
Her actions were entirely understandable.
The village chief composed himself and turned to Mr. Lu. "Old Lu, what do you two think?"
Mr. Lu appeared resigned as he sighed deeply several times. "Ah, it's all debts from our children that we can't repay! Just sign it; what else can we do?" He coughed again.
Wen Qian looked at his acting, realizing how skilled he was at playing the part. The pitiful appearance of Father Lu also stirred some unease among the officials present. It was true; all debts were tied to their children, and they could never fully repay them!
In a few days, they would have to split up, ensuring it didn’t turn out as ugly as the Lu family’s situation, where they had to sign documents severing ties. They still hoped for a peaceful retirement surrounded by children and grandchildren, enjoying the joys of family life!
If Father Lu knew their thoughts, he would surely be furious enough to spit blood.
Wen Qian wrote on a piece of paper, never having felt that writing could be such a satisfying task. Once she finished, she handed it to Father Lu for review. He gritted his teeth as everyone signed their names, marking the completion of this matter.
The village chief took the two copies left behind and sighed deeply. "This is no longer our business; we should take our leave."
As the main gate opened, people outside turned to look into the courtyard. Seeing the village chief and a few others emerge, they curiously asked, "Village chief, is it done?"
"It’s done! If you have nothing else to do here, you should disperse quickly!"
Wen Qian held the two pieces of paper in her hands, feeling an overwhelming excitement as tears welled in her eyes. Finally, in this lifetime, she was free from any ties to the Lu family.
Tomorrow, all she needed was a signature from the village chief regarding her household registration. After that, she would go to the county police station for processing, and then Lu Zheng would apply with the local military unit to finalize everything.
Father Lu stared at the two papers on the table, feeling dizzy. He glanced at Lu Zheng. "Tomorrow, get Lu Yao and Zhang Yan out from the police station. I’ve fulfilled my promise; you must keep yours too."
Seeing Lu Zheng nod in agreement eased Father Lu’s mind. He closed his eyes briefly and pointed at the papers on the table. "Take these; let’s go inside."
As Father Lu turned around, he cast a deep glance at Lu Zheng, his eyes hiding thoughts that Wen Qian couldn’t comprehend.
Wen Qian felt a weight in her heart. This time, taking advantage of his illness and confusion, she had secured those two papers. However, once he regained his clarity and realized the traps she had set within them, he would surely chase after them relentlessly.
But fortunately, they were leaving this place soon. Even if his thoughts were malicious, he wouldn’t be able to act against them easily.
Once inside the house, Lu Zheng saw Wen Qian flipping through those two papers repeatedly. Suddenly, Wen Qian burst into laughter. Concerned, Lu Chen asked her anxiously, "Mom, what’s wrong?"
Earlier in the courtyard during the division drama, Wen Qian had placed Lu Chen inside a thatched hut to keep him from getting too involved.
As she smiled, Wen Qian's eyes began to redden. She looked at Lu Chen and gently embraced him. "Xiao Chen, Mother has succeeded."
Wen Qian turned to Lu Zhengdao, who stood before her. "What if you can't guarantee that Lu Yao and Zhang Yan will be rescued? What will happen tomorrow?"
Lu Zheng's heart ached as he gazed at her. "I quietly asked the police this morning. They said if Lu Yao and Zhang Yan don't provide any useful information, they should be released tomorrow. When they come in the afternoon, I made sure not to mention this matter."
However, whether they could come out still depended on whether they revealed anything at all.
Wen Qian gave him a thumbs up. "You're really clever; I hadn't thought of that."
But surely some police officers had said it out of consideration for his status.
Regardless, as long as she achieved her goal, that was what mattered. If Lu's father and Cuihua found out about this, it might become even more interesting.
Wen Qian looked at him. "Tomorrow morning, we still need to go to the county town. It's not just about putting on a show in front of them; we also need to handle the household registration issues."
Lu Zheng nodded. He had already informed the troops about this matter in advance, so he expected there would be news tomorrow.
Ever since he learned of her intentions, he had been preparing for it, specifically applying for expedited processing from his superiors.
Lu Zheng looked at Wen Qian and asked, "What are your plans for the house?"
