As night fell and the lights went out, the room was enveloped in darkness and silence. Wen Qian held the restless Lu Chen in her arms, gently patting his back.
Today, little Chen must have been frightened. Although Lu Zheng was holding him, he surely still felt scared. Wen Qian couldn't sleep either; she reflected on the events of the day, pondering what to do next.
Lu Zheng turned over and took Lu Chen from her arms, raising his hand to pat the boy's back. Wen Qian turned to look at him, and Lu Zheng glanced back at her, whispering, "You sleep; I'll soothe him."
However, after a short while of patting, Lu Chen began to squirm in his father's embrace, his soft voice revealing his discontent. "Daddy, let me go."
Lu Zheng released him, and he quickly scrambled back into Wen Qian's arms. After a moment, Lu Zheng spoke up, "Why?"
Wen Qian chuckled softly. "Chen Chen was already asleep; you woke him up."
"Why couldn't you keep him asleep?"
Seeing that he was determined to find an answer, she sighed in resignation. "Your strength is too much; how could he not wake up?"
Lu Zheng looked at her in confusion, furrowing his brow. "But I was gentle; I lightened my touch."
He heard the woman beside him sigh and noticed a hint of regret flash in her eyes as she spoke. "Maybe Chen Chen just isn't used to it yet!"
The next morning, when Wen Qian stepped outside, she found Lu Zheng already cooking breakfast. He wore a tank top and was drenched in sweat.
Seeing her awake, he said, "You're up! Come eat."
While they were eating, Lu Zheng told Wen Qian, "The village chief said we should visit his house later."
"Okay," she replied.
As they continued eating, Lu Zheng suddenly turned to Wen Qian and paused before speaking again. "About what happened with Lu Wen and Lu Feng yesterday—just pretend you don't know anything. I'll handle it."
Wen Qian smiled at him. "Alright!"
Lu Zheng carried Lu Chen as they made their way to the village chief's house. Along the way, they encountered villagers who whispered and pointed at them. Some expressed sympathy for Wen Qian. "Oh dear, Lu Zheng's wife has been bullied so much; now that he's back, he will definitely stand up for her. It seems her hard days are finally coming to an end."
"That might not be the case. Perhaps when Lu Zheng returns, he will be divorced. Didn't you hear from Liu Zi, who was in the same unit as him, that Lu Zheng has been seeing someone else outside?"
Wen Qian seemed to have heard nothing, while Lu Zheng looked at her with a hint of panic.
As they reached a corner, Lu Zheng grabbed her arm, frowning with concern. "I don't have anyone outside. I'm not coming back to get divorced."
Wen Qian smiled at his earnestness and gently pulled his hand away. "I believe you. You're back because I called you, right?"
After saying that, she turned and added, "Come on, we shouldn't keep the village head waiting."
When they arrived at the village head's house, they found the village officials already seated inside, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a tribunal.
Seeing them, the village head gestured to the chairs beside them. "You're here! Please sit!"
Once seated, the village head looked at Wen Qian and sighed inwardly. He had watched her grow up. Although he felt for her, it was ultimately a family matter that he couldn't interfere with too much as the village head.
"Wen Qian, why don't you tell us what happened at your home yesterday? We need to understand in order to handle it."
"Village head, I already explained everything clearly when the police questioned me yesterday. You were there too," Wen Qian replied.
The village head had already discussed the matter with the officials and clan elders present in the room. Even if he hadn't mentioned it, word had spread throughout the village; everyone had heard what they needed to.
Sighing, he thought to himself how troublesome this was. "You all really don't make things easy."
He regretted allowing the Lu family to settle in the village in the first place. With so many troublesome matters arising from them, it was exhausting.
Looking up at them, he asked, "What are your plans moving forward?"
Wen Qian replied decisively, "Separation from the family and joining the army."
The village head nodded; this choice made sense given that life for Wen Qian in the Lu household had indeed been difficult.
However, this issue would not be resolved easily.
The villagers were still on Wen Qian's side; after all, they had watched her grow up. Each household had some connection to her, and having lived as neighbors for so long created bonds of affection.
The Wen family was known for their good nature, making them well-liked in the village.
The village head turned to Lu Zheng sternly and said, "Lu Zheng, you need to treat Wen Qian well. Your family owes her too much."
Lu Zheng immediately stood up straight and saluted. "Yes."
Since this matter involved human trafficking, it was serious and would greatly impact the village. Some preparations needed to be made in advance.
At noon, Wen Qian, Lu Zheng, and Lu Chen went to the city together. Lu Zheng made a call to the military district, applying for family members to accompany him and requesting a family housing assignment. After the call, they went to a state-run hotel for lunch before heading to the police station.
Coincidentally, several police officers who had visited the Lu family yesterday were at the station. Upon seeing Wen Qian and the others, they approached them. "We came to ask if there have been any developments in the case."
"Yes, there has been progress, but it needs to remain confidential for now," one of the officers replied. Wen Qian noticed the glances exchanged between the officers and Lu Chen, and she understood immediately. It seemed they couldn't hold back any longer.
They proceeded to the hospital, and before even entering the room, they heard Ding Cuihua's loud cries and curses echoing through the halls. "You need to think of a way to save our son! He’s our only child! Old man! I can't go on living! What sins have I committed? How could that little vixen scheme against me? My two precious grandsons—oh my heavens!"
The nurses had already grown impatient with their commotion; they didn’t enter the room but were relieved that they hadn’t died yet. They weren’t bored enough to come and endure insults while delivering money.
Lu Zheng initially thought Wen Qian would head outside the hospital, but to his surprise, she walked toward the doctor's office instead. At the door, Wen Qian took Lu Chen from Lu Zheng’s arms, took a few deep breaths, knocked on the door, and upon hearing a response from inside, she carried him in.
"Doctor, could you please take a look? He has been coughing a lot lately, and his breathing seems somewhat difficult," she said.
After a thorough examination, the doctor’s expression darkened as he looked at Wen Qian and Lu Zheng with displeasure. "You parents are being utterly irresponsible. This child is severely lacking in nutrition; his physical development is being affected. If this continues without proper attention, he could develop pneumonia. By then, it will be too late for you to regret it."
Wen Qian felt a wave of relief wash over her upon hearing this; thankfully, it wasn’t too late. This morning, when she heard Lu Chen coughing and helped him breathe easier, she suddenly recalled something from her past life. Thank goodness he hadn’t developed pneumonia yet. Thank goodness she remembered.
The doctor looked at Lu Zheng—tall and imposing—and then glanced at Wen Qian and Lu Chen. His anger flared up instantly.
