Zhang Yan and Lu Yao suddenly stood up from their seats, their eyes wide with disbelief as they stared at him. "Lu Chen, how come you're home?"
Lu Chen, startled, burrowed into Wen Qian's embrace. Wen Qian smiled as she held her son. "If my son is home, then where should he be?"
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Lu Zheng standing in the thatched house, peering through the door crack to observe the commotion in the yard.
"No, no, your son should be missing!" Zhang Yan murmured in disbelief.
Suddenly, she recalled how flustered Wen Qian had looked earlier in the village and quickly asked, "What were you so anxious about in the village today?"
Wen Qian shot back at her, "What I look for is none of your business!"
This was all wrong.
The Lu family was in complete disarray. Ding Cuiying stared at Lu Chen with wide eyes, as if her heart had been ripped out.
After a moment of surprise, Lu's father shook his head in anger. "You manage to mess things up more than you fix them. What are we going to do now? The money in our pockets is gone."
Zhang Yan remembered the money in Lu Yao's pocket. If the traffickers were willing to pay, that meant they had definitely taken someone. But why was Lu Chen still here?
If the children had been taken away and Lu Chen remained, who exactly had they taken?
If they had taken children from the village, then they were doomed. The thought made Zhang Yan's legs feel weak; she slumped back into her chair.
She couldn't go to jail; she didn't want to go to jail.
The people sent down from the village lived in a cow shed, their lives worse than death. Anyone from the village could step on them, even children could bully them.
No, no.
Zhang Yan and Lu Yao trembled in their seats, beads of cold sweat forming on their foreheads, their lips quivering and faces pale.
But it was already lunchtime; the adults at home would surely come looking for the children.
Why was it so quiet in the village?
Zhang Yan hoped desperately: What if they had kidnapped the wrong child? What if it wasn’t one from their village but from another? Then they wouldn’t suspect them.
At that moment, both Zhang Yan and Lu Yao fervently wished that the traffickers had already fled far away—better yet, vanished completely.
Ding Cuiying scanned the yard and suddenly asked with confusion, "Where are Xiao Wen and Xiao Feng?"
She called out loudly into the yard: "Xiao Wen! Xiao Feng?"
Ding Cuiying searched inside the house and then checked the kitchen and bathroom but found nothing.
They had specifically arranged for both children to stay at home today and not go outside at all.
Wait!
What did Zhang Yan think of? They gave two payments?
Zhang Yan suddenly ran over and grabbed Lu Yao's arm. Her legs went weak, and she fell to the ground but quickly got back up, her eyes wide with anxiety as she asked, "Did you see the children they took today?"
Lu Yao looked at her irritably. "No, you know how it is with us. They took the money and left."
"Did they say anything else?"
Lu Yao looked at Zhang Yan in confusion. She was almost in tears, her voice hoarse as she shouted, "What did they say?"
Startled by her outburst, Lu Yao thought for a moment and replied quietly, "They said the two children they took were quite chubby, so they gave a bit more money."
Thud!
Zhang Yan collapsed to the ground, her face filled with terror as she desperately released her grip on Lu Yao's hand.
It's over, it's over!
The only two chubby children in the village were Lu Wen and Lu Feng.
They got the wrong ones! They got the wrong ones!
At this point, even Lu Yao could understand what was happening. He looked at Zhang Yan in disbelief, his lips trembling as he whispered, "What do you mean?"
Zhang Yan nodded in despair. Suddenly, she stood up like a madwoman, her eyes bloodshot as she charged toward Wen Qian.
"You wretched woman! Give me back my son! It must be your son who was sold!"
Lu Yao stood in the courtyard, his face filled with disbelief. He began searching each room frantically, shouting, "Lu Wen! Lu Feng!"
There was no response from inside the courtyard. He stopped and looked at Zhang Yan seriously. "They must be playing outside and forgot to come home for dinner."
As he spoke, he started to head out of the courtyard, but Zhang Yan quickly turned him around and gripped him tightly.
"You can't go out! If you shout, everyone in the village will notice, and then they’re done for."
Ding Cuiying and Lu's father seemed to finally realize what was happening. They stared wide-eyed at Zhang Yan and Lu Yao.
Ding Cuiying screamed frantically and lunged toward them, grabbing onto Lu Chen's hand tightly, her eyes filled with hope. "Xiao Yao, you must be mistaken!"
Today, they had specifically promised the two children that as long as they behaved and stayed indoors, they would be given braised pork.
Although the two children were mischievous, they could still hold back for the sake of meat. Moreover, mealtime had already passed, and no matter how much they loved to play, they wouldn’t forget about food, especially since there was braised pork today.
Lu Yao wore a pained expression, nearly in tears. "Mother, they’ve tied us up by mistake."
Ding Cuiying suddenly collapsed to the ground, crying and throwing a tantrum. "My grandsons! My two big grandsons! It’s all your fault for being so troublesome; give me back my grandsons!"
Wen Qian stood in the yard, coldly observing the scene before her. In her past life, they had used Xiao Chen to threaten her. While she was frantically searching for help in the village, they were at home enjoying braised pork. They had even directly tied her up and starved her to force her to reveal where the money was.
Suddenly, Zhang Yan glared fiercely at Lu Chen in Wen Qian's arms. "It’s all this little brat’s fault! If it weren’t for him, the traffickers wouldn’t have made a mistake and taken Xiao Wen and Xiao Feng."
Yes, it was all his fault; it was all his fault.
Ding Cuiying sprang to her feet, covered in mud and grime, her hair disheveled as she glared with her downturned eyes, gritting her teeth. "I’ll crush you, you wretched child! It’s all your fault that my grandsons are in trouble!"
She lunged toward Wen Qian. Inside the house, Lu Zheng saw this and wanted to push the door open but recalled Wen Qian's words. He couldn’t go out; if he did, it would mean he wasn’t listening. Then she would divorce him.
It wasn’t until he saw Wen Qian dodge aside and trip Ding Cuiying that he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
Lu Yao and Zhang Yan were also frantic, wanting to rush at Wen Qian. However, this time Wen Qian held onto Lu Chen tightly; her movements were restricted. She wouldn’t budge an inch from the door of the thatched house.
It was as if she was deliberately protecting the thatched house from them.
Lu Yao remembered he hadn’t checked inside the thatched house yet. His eyes fixed on the tightly shut door; through the crack, he felt there was someone inside.
A glimmer of hope flashed through his mind—what if Wen Qian had hidden the two children inside?
He grabbed Zhang Yan and whispered, "She’s been guarding the door; there must be something unspeakable inside. Let’s break in."
