The next morning at the martial arts training ground
It was still early morning in the base, and very few people had come to the training area for their morning exercises. Qin Weishan set down his equipment and looked up, trying to spot An Xiaotian, but his hopes were dashed when he realized An Xiaotian was not present. Only a handful of individuals were practicing, the sounds of punching bags being struck and iron rings clanging echoed like a mechanical assembly line.
"He's not coming?" Jiao An asked.
Qin Weishan shook his head. "What a waste of our feelings."
"Is that so? That will surely disappoint the seniors."
An Xiaotian's voice came from behind them. Qin Weishan turned around in surprise to see An Xiaotian, dressed in training gear, leaning against the wall with a smile. "Thanks to Sister Jiao An for the reminder yesterday. Look, I'm here now."
"Good kid." Qin Weishan pulled him in for a hug, wrapping his arms around An Xiaotian's shoulders.
"After your practice today, come find me. General Jiang is taking us to welcome an esteemed guest," Jiao An called out as she noticed An Xiaotian's spirits had finally returned to normal.
"Esteemed guest?"
As An Xiaotian and Qin Weishan prepared to put on their protective gear, they exchanged puzzled glances at the mention of a guest.
6:20 PM
A military Humvee drove in and stopped in front of the entrance to the council center.
An Xiaotian, Qin Weishan, Jiao An, and General Jiang stood by the vehicle. General Jiang stepped forward to open the rear door, and a short man stepped out. He was dressed casually in comfortable clothes, with a friendly demeanor and tousled hair reminiscent of Einstein's curls blowing in the wind. He waved at the four of them, and An Xiaotian estimated that he was at least in his forties.
"This doctor is Chen Hao, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a top talent at the National Military Research Center. He has invented nearly thirty new types of Light Weapons. He was once a disciple of Liang Muqi and participated in the development project for the Fierce Eagle Armor; he led the team that developed the core control system for its weapon systems. Liang Muqi's position will be taken over by him," General Jiang introduced.
Upon hearing that he was Liang Muqi's disciple, An Xiaotian felt an inexplicable resentment rise within him. When it came time for him to shake hands with Chen Hao, he hesitated for a moment. Chen Hao noticed his hesitation and said, "Little brother, I understand that as the heir of the Fierce Eagle Armor, everything that has happened has greatly impacted you. I deeply regret and mourn General Wang's death; I truly did not expect my master would commit such heinous acts. Please believe me when I say I stand firmly on the military's side and will not show any mercy towards evildoers. Therefore, I will cooperate with your actions until the very end."
An Xiaotian still shook hands with Dr. Chen Hao while catching a key word: "actions?"
General Jiang nodded. "Tonight at nine o'clock, in the conference room on the second floor of the Council Center, I need all of you to attend the meeting. Be sure to be on time. Before that, An Xiaotian, Dr. Chen Hao will take you to get to know your special forces squad teammates and your partner, Fierce Eagle Armor."
"Miss Jiao An is a renowned sniper in the national military circles, having participated in no less than fifty operations of various sizes. Judo and martial arts are her specialties. As for her combat suit, it was designed by her former... well, that's a sensitive topic, so let's leave it at that."
From the moment they met, Dr. Chen Hao began explaining things to An Xiaotian. As they made their way into the Sharp Tower, Dr. Chen chattered on while An Xiaotian walked alongside, quietly listening. Since he had joined the special forces squad, it was essential for him to understand his two teammates.
"Jiao An's weapon is codenamed 'Dreamfall,' a name derived from ancient interpretations of nightmares, as her own combat codename is 'Nightmare.' Besides her custom combat suit, the most important piece of equipment she has is the world's only multifunctional transforming sniper rifle, 'Dreamfall.' It features three detachable muzzle options: a standard muzzle, a special muzzle, and one that can be considered a cannon muzzle. At her request, we coated it with purple optical paint. It can fire twelve different types of ammunition, including 7.62mm rifle rounds, SmElomg standard rounds, Smk bullets, Mk2z bullets, and even laser bullets that have not yet been widely deployed. Moreover, Dreamfall has two forms: under normal circumstances, it functions as a standard sniper rifle but can switch to a close-combat blade form when necessary. How about that? Most of this was my concept; Liang Muqi just refined it further based on my ideas."
"And then there's Weishan's mechanical gauntlets and his alloy battle suit; I actually conceived those back in the day too. They can amplify the user's strength without delay and in direct proportion. Under normal load conditions, Qin Weishan can deliver a punch with an explosive force of up to two tons—this was tested in real conditions, right Qin Weishan?"
An Xiaotian's eyes lit up; he hadn't expected both teammates to have such formidable gear. Qin Weishan nodded. "Xiaotian, you shouldn't envy us; we should be envious of you instead."
"The innovation of the gauntlets lies in their Thruster and positioning cruise system; once launched, they can return to the operator's hand. Each gauntlet can hold five projectiles and 150 standard rounds. Since his combat style focuses on close quarters and he tends to struggle at long range, we also tailored an alloy battle suit for him. However, its coverage won't be as extensive as your Fierce Eagle Armor; to ensure Qin Weishan's freedom of movement, the alloy battle suit resembles a bulletproof vest."
As they finished discussing Qin Weishan, the four arrived at the armory where their equipment was stored. Jiao An leaned in for a scan by the smart assistant, and then the door opened. Just as Dr. Chen Hao had described, on the left side was Jiao An's multifunctional sniper rifle 'Dreamfall' along with her purple-black bodysuit—An Xiaotian recognized her gear—while on the right were Qin Weishan's mechanical gauntlets and alloy battle suit. His Fierce Eagle Armor was stored in a white chamber directly ahead.
"Since Liang Muqi's betrayal, I haven't seen it up close at this distance," An Xiaotian remarked.
"The access to open that chamber is only granted to you and General Jiang; go ahead and unlock it. It already belongs to you," Chen Hao said.
As An Xiaotian unlocked the chamber door, a rush of cold air greeted him like entering a cold storage room before revealing the neatly arranged Fierce Eagle Armor before everyone’s eyes. Dr. Chen Hao encouraged An Xiaotian to step into the armor and then smiled mysteriously as he said, "Let me tell you a secret: unlock your battle sword and try taking it out."
"What's different about it?" An Xiaotian asked as he drew out his battle sword from behind him. He gently stroked the blade's tip while examining his reflection on its polished surface; even the smooth back of the blade shimmered under the light.
"Focus your thoughts on two keywords: muzzle, unfold."
Immediately after he thought this, a mechanical unlocking sound echoed as the battle sword suddenly split apart along both sides revealing a dark barrel! An Xiaotian stared at his battle sword in astonishment.
"This is the laser gun form of your battle sword; it can emit extremely powerful laser energy with short bursts far exceeding industrial lasers—its peak power can reach nearly seven million kilowatts—enough to easily burn through steel up to ten centimeters thick."
Although everyone could not see An Xiaotian's expression through the armor, his actions were enough to prove his shock. Chen Hao smiled with satisfaction and continued to instruct, "Now, command the artificial intelligence within the armor to open the weaponry database panel. You will see that there are six types of weapons in your arms: near your wrist, there is a Laser Emitter and a revolver-style loaded 'Wolf Spider' class micro-missile; on your forearm, there is a Laser Blade and 'Angel's Trumpet' micro-tracking projectile; finally, at your bicep, there is only an automatic Electromagnetic Railgun. Many energy-based weapons have their energy projectiles provided and converted by your energy core, theoretically allowing for infinite firing. On your right shoulder, there is a Vulcan machine gun that can automatically target enemies. Above the wings on your back, two box-style cluster mini-rockets are installed; I remember the design was for a box of thirty-six rounds... Other areas are still in development. Theoretically, the Fierce Eagle Armor can be modified to equip other weapons as needed.
However, this is just the basic capability of the Fierce Eagle Armor. As its operator, you need to understand that the strength of the Fierce Eagle Armor does not come from the advanced weapons it carries but from having a sufficiently powerful master. The Fierce Eagle was originally built upon a defense system supported by heavy armor at the level of a cosmic explorer, inheriting traditional weaponry's fierce firepower while innovatively incorporating strong individual combat capabilities, such as the battle sword and the driver's high physical fitness. Therefore, the requirements for the driver of the armor are very high; in other words, the upper limit of the Fierce Eagle Armor does not depend on its hard attributes but rather on the driver's brain processing ability and physical condition. The faster you think and the better your body coordination keeps up, the more combos we can execute together, resulting in a higher overall strength of man-machine synergy."
An Xiaotian listened intently as he absorbed Dr. Chen Hao's explanation while browsing through various equipment data in the holographic list within the Fierce Eagle Armor. He felt as if he were making eye contact with the armor; perhaps it was time for him to understand it better—he could no longer afford to continue avoiding this.
At nine o'clock at night
The four arrived punctually at the conference room of the council center. It was said that everyone present had signed confidentiality agreements and thus knew the roster of members in the Superhero Alliance.
"I've called everyone here for one reason," General Jiang, newly appointed and seated at the center position at the front, stated. "I believe you all know about General Wang's assassination. Upon hearing this news, I could only think of an ancient saying: If this can be tolerated, what cannot be tolerated!"
General Jiang's voice was powerful and thunderous, capable of stirring others' emotions; everyone could clearly sense his anger at that moment.
"This is no longer just our own issue; reactionary forces are digging people out right under our noses and betraying us within our base—this is outrageous! The political conference has overwhelmingly passed my proposal—every military base across the nation has declared involvement in this matter and will officially cooperate with us to capture Liang Muqi and bring him to justice! Right now, morale is low and spirits are scattered; we need to win a battle—a glorious victory! Because this is not just about capturing a murderer; it concerns our dignity as a military base in City S! Moreover, Liang Muqi is not someone I am praising lightly; with his intellect and research capabilities, he would be an asset to any armed organization! His betrayal this time threatens national stability—it is urgent!
Therefore, I need to establish a response leadership team, and everyone present here is exactly who I need. Who among you volunteers to lead this team?"
The thirty officers present exchanged glances; taking on this responsibility meant leading the entire military into battle, and no one dared vouch for their own abilities.
"General, let An Xiaotian be deputy commander," Instructor Zhang suggested deliberately.
The conference room fell into dead silence—An Xiaotian? Who was that?
An Xiaotian trembled slightly in shock—this was absurd; he was just an inexperienced rookie! How could he lead everyone against Viper? He quickly waved his hands and said to the puzzled expressions of the veterans around him, "No, no, I'm just..."
Sitting next to him, Jiao An nudged him with her elbow. An Xiaotian turned back to see Qin Weishan and Jiao An looking at him encouragingly.
"You’re not ordinary; don’t underestimate yourself, Xiaotian," Jiao An said.
"I..." An Xiaotian hesitated, spreading his hands with a troubled expression.
"Xiaotian, think of your savior. What are you still hesitating for? Besides, you have us!" Qin Weishan patted An Xiaotian on the chest.
However, General Jiang remained silent, and An Xiaotian did not respond, avoiding eye contact, which quickly drew skepticism.
"Old Zhang, you're not one to joke around," a high-ranking official sitting next to General Jiang shrugged.
"Is this pale-faced kid your new secretary from the barracks?" a lieutenant surnamed Gao mocked directly.
General Jiang still did not speak—he hoped An Xiaotian would take on this responsibility, but he did not want to see An Xiaotian agree out of coercion. He silently watched An Xiaotian bow his head. As a soldier, one must face any doubts and be brave enough to prove one's strength, especially since An Xiaotian carried the expectations of everyone behind him.
This lesson was not something General Jiang Yan could teach this young man; at this turning point in his life, only he could decide.
"What if he isn't joking?"
The sudden response was delivered in an extremely calm tone, filled with determination. The restless conference room fell silent instantly, with dozens of eyes fixed on the boy, waiting for his next clear answer.
An Xiaotian suddenly lifted his face; in his determined gaze burned the stars and flames of resolve.
"I will! I want Liang Muqi to know the price of betraying the special forces squad!"
