Zhuo Er followed him inside. After Xiao Yu left the palace this time, the two of them came to the Prince's Mansion to serve. Whenever he handled affairs in the Ministry of War, they were always by his side. Xiao Yu only told outsiders that they were his old subordinates from the grasslands. Because he was favored by the Emperor and enjoyed great prestige, even if some people had their misgivings, they dared not voice them.
Zhuo Er laughed and said, "At first, we waited for a long time, but when the Princess Consort didn't return, you had us brothers search for her. I was worried something had happened to her. I never expected she simply went back to her family, haha. But why would she return when everything was fine?"
Xiao Yu frowned, his mood darkening. "How would I know?"
Unfortunately, Zhuo Er was oblivious to his mood. After pondering for a moment, he said seriously, "Perhaps she's angry with you."
Xiao Yu shot him a glare, his voice colder. "Does she dare?"
Yet deep down, he couldn't help but reflect. Just yesterday, they had been chatting and laughing together; there was no sign that Song Feiwan was upset at all.
Zhuo Er said foolishly, "Others might not dare, but our Princess Consort is not an ordinary person. Anyway, I've heard that women in the Great Zhou do not return home unless something is wrong. Moreover, women are often contradictory; on the surface, they may seem fine, but inside they could have been angry for days."
Xiao Yu's tightly furrowed brows showed no signs of relaxing.
Seeing him suddenly stand up, Zhuo Er asked, "Your Highness?"
Without allowing any objections, Xiao Yu commanded, "To Song's Mansion."
Zhuo Er replied, "Are you going to apologize to the Princess Consort? Even so, shouldn't you eat first? Those old men in the Ministry of War are all difficult to deal with; just talking with them makes me feel like I'm shortening my lifespan. You can't go without eating!"
Xiao Yu disdainfully said, "Noisy. Who said I'm going to apologize?"
Zhuo Er was puzzled. "Then what are you going for?"
"To settle accounts with her."
In the end, they did not eat. Under the night sky, the three of them rode horses down the empty street towards Song's Mansion.
Song Feiwan still hadn't thought of Xiao Yu. She leisurely took a bath while Dong Zhi helped her twist her hair with a cloth. Meanwhile, she held a book in her hands and quietly read under the lamp.
"Is everything ready?" Song Feiwan asked.
"Yes, everything is according to your arrangement," Dongzhi replied.
"Mm."
"Your Highness," Dongzhi asked with a hint of worry, "there won't be any accidents, will there?"
"There won't be," Song Feiwan said confidently, a smile playing on her lips.
Having just finished drying her hair, Song Feiwan felt a wave of unease wash over her. She pushed the book away slightly and said seriously to Dongzhi, "It's about to begin."
Dongzhi tensed up, bracing herself for what was to come.
As the discomfort within Song Feiwan intensified, it felt as if something was churning violently inside her. A sharp pain swept through her entire body.
Suddenly, she coughed violently! Black blood spewed from her mouth, splattering her chin and the white collar of her robe—a shocking sight.
Even though Dongzhi had been prepared, her heart still lurched. She anxiously shouted, "Someone! Quickly! Your Highness has been poisoned!"
In an instant, several servants rushed in. Upon seeing Song Feiwan spitting out black blood, they panicked.
"What’s happening?"
"How could this be? Why is she poisoned?"
"Was there something wrong with the dinner last night?"
"Hurry and find a doctor!"
"Someone has poisoned the princess!"
As people rushed about, the lights throughout the Song residence flickered on, and an atmosphere of tension and fear quickly spread among everyone present.
