Rong Anning truly felt deflated, almost wanting to leave. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a palace maid outside giving her a signal. Suddenly, an idea struck her, and she stood up immediately.
Since it was all just a misunderstanding, I can relax now. Cousin and Cousin-in-law are indeed a match made in heaven. She awkwardly reassured herself as the two bid farewell. I remembered I had some matters to attend to outside the palace, so I took my leave.
Song Feiwan was a bit surprised. "How long have you been in the palace?"
If she left, wouldn’t that mean she would be alone with Xiao Yu? Oh no, what a nightmare.
Rong Anning replied with a hum.
Song Feiwan tried to keep her from leaving. "Is it something very important? Can't you send someone else to do it? Later, I’ll be going with His Highness to pay respects to the Empress Dowager. I wanted you to stay for lunch."
Rong Anning straightened her expression. "It's about studying; how can I let someone else handle that?"
Song Feiwan remarked, "I can't tell at all that you love studying."
Xiao Yu glanced at Song Feiwan and asked, "What are you studying?"
Rong Anning's gaze wandered. "Just... the Four Books and some classics."
He chuckled ambiguously.
Rong Anning declared, "Anyway, I'm leaving! See you next time!" She bowed to the two and hurriedly exited.
Inside the hall, only Song Feiwan and Xiao Yu remained. After a few seconds of mental preparation, she turned around and gently asked, "Did His Highness come from Tai Chi Palace?"
Xiao Yu replied, "No, I went to court first."
Song Feiwan was taken aback and congratulated him, "It seems the ministers from the previous court know you’ve returned."
Xiao Yu chuckled lightly, thinking to himself that it wasn't just the court officials; his brothers' faces were all green with envy, yet they had to force smiles and congratulate him.
Especially Crown Prince Xiao Yan, who kept saying how fortunate it was for the court and the country that his fourth brother had returned. The dark circles under his eyes were clear evidence he hadn’t slept all night.
Xiao Yu felt no sympathy; instead, he found it amusing. Even without his previous memories, he didn’t think he would have any brotherly feelings for those people.
After making an appearance in court and receiving the Emperor's rewards, he lost interest and took his leave. Compared to those hypocritical brothers, Song Feiwan—the little trickster—was far more interesting.
Thinking of this, he called out, "Which maid just reminded Rong Anning? Come in."
Immediately, a maid entered, trembling, and knelt on the ground. "This servant greets Your Highness and the Princess."
Xiao Yu did not allow her to rise and asked indifferently, "What did Rong Anning ask you to remind her of?"
The maid dared not hesitate in her response. "Replying to Your Highness, someone from the Rong residence sent word that the items Miss Rong purchased have arrived."
Song Feiwan interjected, "Hmm? It wouldn't be the item she was thinking of, would it?"
Xiao Yu's deep phoenix eyes turned to Song Feiwan. "Did the Princess think of something?"
Her heart skipped a beat as she silently cursed his perceptiveness for what felt like the hundredth time. "Haha, I wasn't thinking of anything at all."
Unfortunately for her, Xiao Yu was not easily deceived. He instructed the maid, "Bring the same items here."
The maid replied, "This servant obeys."
Song Feiwan felt even more frustrated and forced a laugh as she advised, "Your Highness, what’s there to see in those items? With your strategic mind and exceptional talents, you should be focusing on statecraft and military strategies. I’ve just become familiar with several major bookstores in the city; why don’t I send someone to buy the new books that have come out in recent years?"
Xiao Yu chuckled, his handsome features becoming even more captivating in that moment. "Princess is mistaken; I currently enjoy reading those items."
