In the opposite direction of the Jinan carriage, on the other side of Zhuque Street, a carriage adorned with the Rong family crest was blocked by a throng of people. Inside sat the siblings Rong Jiayi and Rong Anning, who had just returned from their maternal grandfather's house.
As soon as she heard there was excitement outside, Rong Anning could no longer sit still. She lifted the curtain of the carriage and poked her head out to take a look.
"It seems someone is causing trouble at Song Feiwan's clinic! Brother, I’m going to check it out."
Rong Jiayi, dressed in a black formal robe on his day off, looked imposing with his broad shoulders. A hint of helplessness crossed his stern face. "You should call her Consort Chen."
Rong Anning pouted. "There’s no one around anyway. I’m going!"
With that, she eagerly jumped down from the carriage, afraid she would miss the commotion. Rong Jiayi, worried for her safety, tried to follow but was repeatedly stopped by her.
"Brother, you’ve just been appointed as the Minister of Justice; you’re the most accomplished among us. Plus, your serious demeanor makes those young nobles act like mice when they see a cat. If you go over there, won’t you scare them all away?"
Rong Jiayi sighed in resignation. "So what do you mean?"
"Just stay inside the carriage and don’t show yourself! Wait until the time is right to come out!"
He sighed again and waved his hand in acknowledgment.
Rong Anning beamed at him. "I knew you’d understand!"
Without looking back, she dove into the crowd.
Quickly, she reached Song Feiwan’s side and looked at the elegantly dressed man bringing a patient over, frowning as she asked, "Xu Xianzhi, what are you doing here?"
Xu Xianzhi glanced around cautiously before confirming that Rong Jiayi—the imposing figure—was not present. He then smiled at Rong Anning. "Miss Rong, it’s a pleasure to meet you. The Young Master is here to treat someone."
Rong Anning replied seriously, "Is it kidney deficiency?"
As soon as she spoke, laughter erupted around them.
Xu Xianzhi's smile froze on his face as he retorted angrily, "What nonsense are you talking about! The Young Master is here with his servant to see a patient!"
Song Feiwan turned to Rong Anning and asked, "Do you know him?"
Rong Anning crossed her arms and reluctantly introduced, "This is Xu Xianzhi, the heir of the Duke of Dingguo." She lowered her voice slightly, hinting discreetly, "The current Empress also has the surname Xu."
Song Feiwan's eyes flashed with understanding. It seemed that this Duke of Dingguo was aligned with Crown Prince Xiao Yan. Xiao Yan viewed her as a thorn in his side; no wonder Xu Xianzhi had come to seek trouble with her.
In the next moment, Rong Anning raised her voice again and asked, "He is a frequent visitor to the flower houses in the capital. You are a doctor; you should be able to tell. Am I wrong in saying he has kidney deficiency?"
Song Feiwan glanced at Xu Xianzhi and replied coolly, "One should not discuss medical conditions in public."
While it seemed like she was advising Rong Anning, it sounded more like an affirmation of her words.
Xu Xianzhi's face instantly darkened like a pot bottom, and he stopped fanning himself, taking a few agitated steps away.
Yet these two women—one was the legitimate daughter of the Rong family, and the other was the Princess Consort of Chen—he could not afford to reprimand either!
"My servants are in dire straits; will you treat them or not, Doctor Song?" he asked angrily.
Song Feiwan replied, "If they have already taken a number to see me this morning, then they will certainly be examined."
Xu Xianzhi suppressed his fury and revealed his number.
Dongzhi stepped forward to confirm and nodded at Song Feiwan.
Rong Anning's pretty face turned cold as she whispered to Song Feiwan:
