The sisters had grown up together, and Rong Anning couldn't bring herself to be harsh. She teased lightly, "Is a special signature really that rare? If you buy it, doesn't the book already have the author's signature?"
Lu Miaomiao replied eagerly, "Mr. Zhao Zhao's book is different! It tells the love story between Miss Song and His Highness the Crown Prince. It's especially beautiful and moving! I've read it three times, and I cry every time!"
The other young ladies chimed in, "Yes, yes! It's the hottest book in the capital right now!"
"Oh, I've never read such a passionate tale. His Highness the Crown Prince is so deeply affectionate; he loves Miss Song to the core."
"Miss Song is wonderful too! They are a perfect match, both talented and beautiful!"
"The special signatures are all written by Mr. Zhao Zhao himself; each book is unique and a limited edition! It's a pity they’re mixed in with ordinary books. We can only pool our money to buy more copies to share."
Rong Anning glanced at the stack of books on the stone table. "A few? There must be at least a hundred here."
Lu Miaomiao sighed, "I think that's too few. We should buy a thousand copies!"
"A thousand copies? The Hou family wouldn't even be able to distribute one to each person."
Her words reminded Lu Miaomiao, who immediately picked up a copy without a special signature and handed it to Rong Anning. "Take this one home and read it!" she said cheerfully.
Rong Anning frowned in disdain. "I won't read it. How could these scholars possibly capture the essence of such a heroic figure as the Crown Prince? Besides, defaming royal relatives is a grave crime; aren't you afraid of being implicated?"
Lu Miaomiao insisted, "These stories are all well-known and have been sold for some time now without any issues. Just take it!"
She shoved the book into Rong Anning's arms and confidently added, "If it's not good, feel free to come back and hit me!"
Though Rong Anning reluctantly accepted it, she had no intention of reading it.
"With my cousin the Crown Prince forever separated from us, I'm already heartbroken. Why would you want to rub salt in my wounds?"
Lu Miaomiao reassured her, "The story has a happy ending! The Crown Prince doesn't die; he ends up with Miss Song and they have two adorable babies! Isn't that a way to make up for lost regrets?"
"That just makes me angrier!" Rong Anning retorted.
Lu Miaomiao continued to eagerly unwrap books with a mischievous grin, clearly enjoying the more intimate content within.
As her words fell, the other noble ladies stifled their laughter, their cheeks flushed.
"It's well-written but a bit short; it's more of an implied kind of thing."
"I think so too."
Rong Anning was puzzled. "Hmm? What kind of riddle are you all playing?"
Lu Miaomiao exclaimed, "Oh, if you want to know, just go back and take a look! Don't talk yet; let me finish unwrapping these special editions!"
Rong Anning ultimately didn't stay long at the Loyal and Righteous Marquis's residence. She found herself unable to join in the conversations among Lu Miaomiao and the other young ladies, who were all discussing storybooks. Feeling somewhat displeased, she returned to the Rong residence and tossed the storybook onto the table.
After her evening bath, she sat in a chair while her maid dried her hair. The more she looked at the cover of the storybook, the more complicated her feelings became. Lu Miaomiao and the others must have been deceived; she couldn't believe that it was written so well.
Since there was nothing else to do, why not flip through a couple of pages? After reading, she would have grounds to criticize the storybook thoroughly! Resolute in her decision, Rong Anning opened the book.
Before she knew it, dawn had broken. When her close maid entered and saw her eyes swollen like walnuts, she hurriedly asked, "Miss, what happened? Who upset you?"
Holding the storybook tightly, Rong Anning said with tears welling up in her eyes:
