Song Feiwan's gaze darkened, and she remained silent.
Dongzhi continued, "Earlier, I thought there was something between you and the Crown Prince, and it worried me to no end. With his status, if you married him, your life would surely be anything but peaceful. But now, you are with the one you love, His Highness King Chen! My heart is finally at ease!"
Song Feiwan lowered her eyelids and sighed softly, "Even you can see that the Crown Prince is not a suitable match. Yet I foolishly fell for him. Sigh."
Dongzhi took her words as a compliment to her own cleverness and smiled brightly, "No matter what, you will always be my mistress!"
With a knowing look in her enchanting fox-like eyes, Song Feiwan replied, "With such sweet words, do you have a request?"
Feeling a bit shy, Dongzhi scratched her face and said, "Indeed, nothing escapes your notice. Miss, may I borrow your writings to take a look? I promise I won’t delay my work or dirty or lose them!"
"Go ahead and take a look," Song Feiwan said readily.
Dongzhi thanked her joyfully and immediately immersed herself in the writings until the middle of the night. She had never read such vivid and captivating words before; she was completely absorbed in the story, laughing and crying along with the two main characters, Xiao Yu and Song Zhaozhao, moved by their love and connection.
However, in the dead of night, a sudden sound of rushing water jolted her from her reverie.
Her heart raced as she jumped out of bed without even putting on her shoes and ran outside. "Miss! The water is flooding! You need to wake up!"
As soon as she shouted, all the servants were startled awake and rushed out in disarray.
"Where is the flooding?"
"Quickly! Bring water to put out the fire!"
Dongzhi glanced around and soon realized that the fire was not here. It was coming from the courtyard where Song Feiwan lived!
Her bedroom was already lit up with lamps as she called for Dongzhi to come in.
Dongzhi hurriedly approached the bed, feeling a chill run through her. Song Feiwan was dressed in a white nightgown with her hair down, her stunning face still carrying traces of sleepiness. Yet her eyes had regained their clarity.
"What’s happening outside?" she asked.
"Miss, the courtyard you moved into is on fire!"
Song Feiwan fell silent for a moment before suddenly bursting into laughter. "Now, that's quite interesting."
Dongzhi thought of something and chuckled maliciously. "It's such bad luck that the fire broke out just after you moved in."
"Not necessarily an act of God," Song Feiwan replied with a hint of meaning in her words, lazily yawning as she nestled deeper into her soft, comfortable blankets.
Closing her eyes, she said, "Dongzhi, go to sleep. We'll talk about it tomorrow morning."
The next day, the sky was shrouded in mist. Song Feiwan lingered in bed for a while before finally getting up.
Dongzhi entered with a basin of water, her eyes showing signs of fatigue with dark circles beneath them.
"Did yesterday's fire scare you?" Song Feiwan asked.
"No," Dongzhi said, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It’s just that your writing is so captivating that I lost track of time and ended up reading until dawn."
Song Feiwan raised an eyebrow. "Wasn't it almost dawn by then?"
However, she could understand; when faced with an irresistible novel, she too would stay up late reading.
"When I saw the two protagonists finally together, I was really moved! Miss, you must have based them on yourself and His Highness, right? I never expected so much would happen between you two!"
Song Feiwan replied, "The plot is entirely fictional."
"At most, it's just literature."
Dongzhi hardly paid attention to that and continued enthusiastically praising her for a while before remembering something else.
"By the way, Miss, guess what?"
