Deng Gang's eyes widened like copper bells as he fixed his gaze on the severed head, his expression shifting through various shades of disbelief. Finally, he pointed at the head and asked Zeng Liang, "I wonder... Constable Zeng, what does this mean?"
Zeng Liang's gaze cut through the air like a blade, landing squarely on Li Changjiang.
At that moment, Li Changjiang's legs trembled uncontrollably, and he appeared on the verge of collapsing, his face as pale as paper, devoid of any color.
Zeng Liang smiled and said, "I just wanted to ask if shookeeper Deng has seen this person."
Although a smile remained on Deng Gang's face, it was strained and difficult to maintain. He shook his head and replied, "No, I haven't seen him... Well, perhaps I have, but with the hundreds of people who come and go in my establishment every day, I fear I wouldn't remember even if I had."
Zeng Liang suddenly extended his gaze toward the distant Li Changjiang and remarked with a smile, "Then... what about your friend? Has he seen him?"
At Zeng Liang's question, Li Changjiang began to tremble violently. His hands flailed in front of his chest as he stammered, "No... no... I've never seen him, not once..."
Zeng Liang's eyes sparkled with intensity as he abruptly stood up and waved his hand at Deng Gang and Li Changjiang. "Well then, I won't trouble you any further. I have other important matters to attend to; let's save this drink for another time."
Wang Long felt puzzled as he watched Zeng Liang prepare to leave.
Just outside the tavern, he heard Deng Gang shout, "Quick! We're closing for the day; go shut the doors!"
Wang Long's confusion deepened as he caught up with the departing Zeng Liang. " Constable Zeng, are you really just leaving like this? They definitely have something to hide; just look at how scared they are—especially that Li Changjiang."
Zeng Liang chuckled softly and replied, "It's only natural for an ordinary person to be overwhelmed by such a bloody sight for the first time. Perhaps he's just too timid."
"Are we just going to leave it at that?" Wang Long said reluctantly.
"Hehe, at least we had two jars of fine ' Drunken Immortal'!" Zeng Liang said, suddenly breaking into a cheerful laugh. "In this world, some things don't require action; you just need to wait."
Zeng Liang went straight back to the Yamen, where Sun Man had been waiting impatiently and hurried over to inquire about the news.
Zeng Liang simply smiled and invited Sun Man for tea, waiting until noon when suddenly two Bounty Hunters rushed in and whispered a few words in Zeng Liang's ear.
Putting down his teacup, Zeng Liang said to Sun Man, "My lord, there's no need for tea anymore. Shall I offer you something else?"
Sun Man looked puzzled. "What shall we drink?"
Zeng Liang took Sun Man's hand, his eyes sparkling brightly as he said, "Let’s have some wine!"
Zeng Liang and Wang Long returned to Hero Gathering Pavilion for the second time, this time accompanied by a local magistrate—Sun Man.
Wang Long understood Zeng Liang's glance and stepped forward to push open the tavern door. The waiter, seeing the imposing group of Bounty Hunters at the entrance, immediately lost his bravado and timidly said, "The Innkeeper has instructed that we are not serving today; perhaps you gentlemen..." Before he could finish, Wang Long shoved him aside, and they all rushed inside.
Zeng Liang smiled slightly and stepped aside to let Sun Man enter first before striding in himself.
Before long, Deng Gang came down alone, looking displeased but still forcing a smile as he said, "So it’s the honor of having master Sun and Constable Zeng visiting our Hero Gathering Pavilion. It truly brings glory to my humble establishment. Waiter! Why are you so oblivious? Hurry and invite the gentlemen and Constable Zeng to the private room upstairs."
Deng Gang personally led them upstairs, choosing the largest and most exquisite table for them to sit at. Once the drinks arrived, Deng Gang filled the cups for Sun Man and Zeng Liang before pouring himself a full glass. He raised his cup and said, "I would like to propose a toast to my lord and Constable Zeng."
Zeng Liang and Sun Man nodded to each other and raised their cups. Zeng Liang took a sip and suddenly asked Deng Gang, "By the way, shookeeper Deng, where is your friend? Since we are drinking, it would be more lively with more people. Why not invite him out to join us?"
Deng Gang's smile stiffened as he replied, "He has already left. We weren't very close; it was just a casual acquaintance, nothing deep."
"Oh, so he has already gone? Haha."
Zeng Liang's smile suddenly faded, and his voice turned much colder. "I wonder when shookeeper Deng's friend left? Why is it that the Bounty Hunter I stationed at the entrance of the tavern didn't see him? Could it be that he sprouted wings and flew away?"
Deng Gang sensed the underlying meaning in Zeng Liang's words, his thick brows furrowing slightly as he asked, " Constable Zeng, what do you mean by that? Why did you send someone to guard the entrance of my tavern?"
"Haha, I was just concerned for the safety of shookeeper Deng and the patrons inside the tavern. Since one person has already had their head chopped off after leaving your establishment, perhaps there will be a second." Zeng Liang replied nonchalantly.
Deng Gang's face turned ashen as he downed his drink in one gulp.
Zeng Liang chuckled, " shookeeper Deng drinks like this; it's easy to get drunk. Oh, by the way, although I didn't see your friend leave, I did notice someone else coming out of your tavern. shookeeper Deng, would you like to take a look at him?"
With a clap of his hands, a Bounty Hunter led someone up the stairs. This person wore a large hat that obscured his face.
When the Bounty Hunter lifted the hat, they could finally see his features—his eyes were so small they seemed like slits, but he had a prominent nose. He carried a small wooden box on his back, which had been opened to reveal several finely crafted Sugar Figurines and Sugar Beasts inside.
Deng Gang had already stood up but now slumped back down in despair, biting his lip and unable to meet Zeng Liang's gaze.
