If one were to change fate with another's life, that would be an underhanded method, something that those of righteous standing absolutely cannot do.
One man, dressed in a white robe and appearing to be in his fifties, stepped forward with a look of guilt. "Master Sheng, the situation remains unchanged. Our abilities are lacking, and we are truly powerless."
The Sheng family held a prominent position, and they could not afford to offend them. Upon seeing this, Master Sheng's earlier joy at seeing Ruan Fuxi had turned into deep sorrow.
Is there still no way out? Am I destined to be a white-haired man sending a black-haired one to the grave?
Sheng Yanzhou listened to their conversation, his expression still calm, but for the first time, he felt dissatisfaction with the heavens. He did not want to die like this. He wished to live a few more years in the world with Xiao Xi.
The masters noticed that Sheng Yanzhou remained composed even when he knew his time was short, and they felt a great deal of regret in their hearts. Such a promising fate—one fit for an emperor, a true prodigy—was exceedingly rare. They had seen many lives, but none as precious as his.
Yet here was Sheng Xian, facing the end of his life; it would not be an exaggeration to say that fate was playing tricks on him. What a pity it was.
Master Sheng understood that there was no way to change this and sighed deeply once more, as if he had aged several years in an instant.
He turned to the steward Jin and said, "Since that's the case, please see the masters off."
The Sheng family upheld a strict code of conduct; they could not resort to such cruel methods as exchanging lives.
Steward Jin also wore a sorrowful expression but maintained his composure. He handed each master a large red envelope and said, "Masters, thank you for your hard work today."
Just as they were about to turn away, one of them suddenly spoke up. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but does your esteemed household have any hundred-year-old rehmannia?"
He had come specifically upon hearing that the Sheng family possessed this herb.
Master Sheng turned his gaze toward Sheng Yanzhou upon hearing this question.
Sheng Yanzhou nodded and said in a deep voice, "Indeed, this medicine exists."
The other party was overjoyed upon hearing this. "Sheng Xian, I wonder if you could sell me this medicinal herb? I can buy it. Additionally, while I cannot change fate, I can extend your lifespan by a few days."
Old Master Sheng immediately asked, "What method is that? How long can it extend?"
The other party pondered for a moment. "To put it simply, this method is not particularly sinister; however, it requires a close relative to willingly share their remaining lifespan to prolong Sheng Xian's life. In essence, it's not much different from an exchange of lives, except that it involves a willing family member."
Old Master Sheng was still contemplating this. However, Sheng Yanzhou immediately rejected the proposal. "Thank you, but I will not consider such a method." He was resolute in his refusal.
He continued, "As for the one hundred and ten-year-old He Shou Wu, I'm afraid you will be disappointed. I have already given that herb to someone else."
Upon hearing this, the master looked disappointed and then his gaze fell on Ruan Fuxi and the medicine box in front of her. "Did you give it to that young lady?"
Ruan Fuxi nodded. "Yes, it's with me."
The other party was delighted. "Miss, would you be willing to sell it to me?"
Ruan Fuxi shook her head. "I'm sorry, but I need it as well."
Before the person could express dissatisfaction, she turned to Sheng Yanzhou and spoke in a sweet voice, "Yanzhou, I have a way to save you."
