Even after ten years, Ruan Anmu spoke of this matter with disgust and hatred.
Back then, after my parents died, I was left all alone. My uncle and aunt came over as soon as they caught wind of it. They took away the money and property my parents left behind, leaving me with nothing. Even though they lived well off my parents' assets, none of them were willing to take care of me. Just after the seventh day of mourning for my parents, I was sent to an orphanage.
Ruan Fuxi had no idea that there was so much more to the story than what was briefly mentioned in the novel.
This was too much! Wasn’t this cutting off all ties?
Ruan Anmu continued, "As if that wasn't enough, they didn't even want to let my parents be buried together; they didn't want to pay for the funeral either."
Ruan Fuxi listened, her brows furrowing tighter with each word.
Suddenly, Ruan Anmu sighed, looking quite melancholic. The reason her uncle and aunt acted this way was that her father was not their biological brother.
Before Ruan Anmu could ask anything, Ruan Fuxi quickly explained. "Dad was picked up by Grandpa from outside; he wasn’t Grandma and Grandpa's biological child. It’s said that when he was found, he was already six or seven years old. When asked for his name, he only said his surname was Ruan, so Grandpa didn’t change his last name."
This was the first time Ruan Fuxi had heard about this.
But even so, how could they rob him of his inheritance and then neglect their own parents' funeral arrangements?
Ruan Anmu thought the same way. She had heard from her father that her uncle and aunt never liked him since childhood because he bore the surname Ruan while they were surnamed He. After their parents died, they seized the property but had no intention of organizing their funeral. Only under pressure from the neighbors did they reluctantly send her parents to the crematorium.
At this point, Ruan Anmu turned to Ruan Fuxi and said, "The He family wanted to save money on a burial plot, so my parents' ashes were buried together. Little Xi, you should come with me to visit their grave sometime."
Ruan Fuxi nodded in agreement. "Of course."
Yet she remained curious about why her father never thought to find his real family after being taken in by the He family when he was old enough to remember things.
She posed this question to Ruan Anmu, but Ruan Anmu didn’t have an answer either.
"I asked Dad about it once, but he just told me flatly not to ask again in the future, so I didn’t dare bring it up anymore."
Ruan Fuxi nodded, indicating that she understood. Just as the two were about to continue their conversation, a loud commotion erupted outside the house.
"Ruan Fuxi, get out here!"
Without even needing to look, Ruan Fuxi could guess who it was. It was her cousin, Ruan Jiajia, the foolish little brat of her ridiculous aunt from yesterday.
Ruan Jiajia shouted as she barged in, disregarding the butler's attempts to stop her. She stormed right up to Ruan Fuxi and pointed a finger at her, ready to strike. However, as soon as she reached out, a sharp cry escaped her lips.
"Ah! Something bit me!"
Ruan Jiajia tried to retract her hand but found it stuck, the pain only intensifying. It was then that she finally noticed what was in front of her.
"Are you out of your mind? Why are you raising a turtle? It bit me! You owe me money for this! And yesterday you kicked my mom; she's still in the hospital, so you owe me for that too!"
Ruan Fuxi lazily looked at her from the ground, a half-smile on her face as she replied, "Oh? You got bitten; what does that have to do with me? I didn’t bite you. Your mom is in the hospital; again, what does that have to do with me? She seemed just fine when she left yesterday."
Then she added with a smirk, "Ruan Jiajia, did you come here just to cause trouble? Are you made of porcelain? You seem so good at bumping into things."
Ruan Jiajia was about to retort when the pain in her hand distracted her momentarily.
"Ouch! It hurts! Ruan Fuxi, make your turtle let go!"
In response, Ruan Fuxi chuckled and gently patted the turtle's head.
