As I stepped out of the concert venue, a chilly wind swept through the air. I wrapped my coat tighter around me and hailed a cab to go home. The house was eerily quiet and just as cold. I walked over to close the window, then removed my makeup and collapsed onto the bed. The blankets felt icy against my skin as I curled up into a ball and pulled out my phone, opening a short video platform.
I began to scroll aimlessly, hoping to find a short drama to distract myself. Suddenly, a notification caught my eye. Zhang Jiahui was wearing a wedding dress, her smile gentle and charming. The man beside her, holding her hand, was none other than Zhou Jie.
“Today is the day of my wedding with Brother Zhou Jie! To be honest, I’m really nervous!” she exclaimed. “Brother Jie is always so busy, so we’ve spent so little time together. I regret not being with him sooner!”
“But it’s okay; from now on, we are husband and wife! We’ll have a long, long time together and will never be apart again!”
Zhang Jiahui covered her face with her hands, slightly bowing her head in shyness. Zhou Jie wrapped his arms around her waist, his eyes filled with joy and satisfaction at becoming a husband.
I stared at the video, my heart aching with a dull pain. He got married! He married someone else!
---
Five days remained until my wedding. Surprisingly, I felt quite good during this time. I thought to myself, who hasn’t faced death in life? Since we all have to face it eventually, why not do some good deeds to accumulate some karma?
So, I headed straight to the Charity Organization, intending to donate the eight-digit savings that Zhou Jie had left with me. Oh right, I made sure to keep Zhou Jie's name attached to it. I hoped he would have better luck in his next life.
I donated half of it; as for the other half, I planned to spend it on myself. After all, with life counting down, shouldn’t I enjoy myself? Otherwise, I wouldn’t even be able to close my eyes in peace after death.
After donating money at the Charity Organization, I stepped outside when suddenly everything went dark, and I lost consciousness.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. I rubbed my throbbing head, still trying to process what had happened when a nurse approached me and said, "Miss Liu, you scared us to death!"
"You fainted suddenly, and we tried calling your husband over ten times but couldn't get through!"
I was taken aback. Zhou Jie’s phone was always reachable; how could it be unavailable this time? I forced a smile, trying to act nonchalant. "It's fine; I'll just call him later."
"By the way, what did the doctor say?"
At the mention of this, the nurse's expression turned a bit awkward. After a moment of hesitation, she replied slowly, "The doctor said it's best for you to stay in the hospital."
"Otherwise, you might not even make it through six months."
I fell silent for a moment before throwing off the covers and getting out of bed. "No need; please help me with my discharge paperwork."
The doctor prescribed some medication and advised me to return for regular check-ups. As I walked out of the office with the medication in hand, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I answered the call, and Zhou Jie’s voice came through. "I was busy earlier and didn’t notice your call. What’s up?"
I bit my lip and replied softly, "Nothing much."
"Oh." Zhou Jie sounded a bit disappointed but still acknowledged me. Just as I was about to hang up, I spotted the Tattoo Shop Owner sitting not far away. She noticed me too and waved with a smile. "Yiru! What a coincidence!"
I ended the call and walked over to her. "What a coincidence."
The shop owner nodded towards the doctor's office. "Here for a check-up?"
I sat down on a nearby chair and nodded.
"What about you?"
The boss lady smiled, though her smile held a hint of bitterness.
"Just like you, seeing a doctor."
I glanced at her and saw the helplessness in her eyes.
I talked with the boss lady for a long time, and by the time I left the hospital, it was already dark.
I handed her a cigarette, and she smiled as she took it. We both lit up and shared a laugh in the cold wind.
How tragic.
So very tragic.
I changed my flight and didn't go abroad; instead, I flew to Yunnan with Tian Li.
Going abroad was out of the question! With my current health, I would probably collapse halfway across the Atlantic just to see the sights.
Rather than dying on the road, I might as well find some scenery along my country's borders.
Tian Li was in the same boat; we were both nearing our end.
Her stomach cancer had reached an advanced stage, and that day, I was her last customer at the shop.
Perhaps "kindred spirits" was the best way to describe us.
She wanted to visit Erhai Lake with me; before we died, we had to see the most beautiful scenery.
On the day Tian Li and I set off for Yunnan, Zhang Jiahui posted a new video.
In the video, she and Zhou Jie were embracing each other while bungee jumping from a hundred-meter platform.
The sound of rushing wind filled the air; Zhou Jie, terrified of heights, had stiffened up, yet he leaned close to Zhang Jiahui's ear and shouted, "I love you."
Zhang Jiahui laughed brightly and shouted something back.
If you listened closely, you would realize that what Zhou Jie shouted at the end wasn't "Huihui," but "Ru."
