"Did he really say that?" The old man of the Lin family frowned, a hint of disbelief in his eyes.
"Yes."
The people standing below felt a bit anxious. In fact, the last time they went to find Lin Yuan, the old man was unaware. If it hadn't been for the trouble that arose later with the young master, the old man might still be in the dark.
But now he knew, and it was true that the old man wasn't blaming them.
"He's really grown wings."
Just as he finished speaking, a secretary hurriedly walked in beside the old man, his steps quick and urgent.
After reaching the old man's side, he whispered something.
"Missing? When did he go missing? Didn't you send anyone to keep an eye on him?"
The secretary wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"We had been keeping someone on watch, but the young master said he needed to go to the restroom. Who would have thought he wouldn't come back after that?"
Half an hour ago, they had sent someone to look for him, but after searching everywhere, they still couldn't find him. They had no choice but to come and inform the old man. After all, it was risky to deliver such news directly to him; they were worried about his heart not being able to handle it.
"Have there been any calls or messages?"
Having lived through many storms in his life, he understood that if someone dared to kidnap his grandson from the Lin family estate, they must have done their homework first. They were either after money or had some other motive.
He continued speaking.
The secretary nodded. "There was a call, but we couldn't trace the address. They demanded three hundred million; otherwise, they would directly execute him."
"How dare they?!" The old man felt a surge of anger rising in him.
How much liquid capital did the Lin family even have? To suddenly take out three hundred million would be like stripping their entire fortune bare!
"Go call everyone else over. We need to stabilize the situation first."
The Lin family had experienced kidnappings before; it wasn't new to them. Not to mention, Lin Muzhi had been kidnapped several times when he was younger. Most of these people were just after money.
After a while, Lin Muzhi's parents walked in, both with red-rimmed eyes.
The child who was missing was their youngest son; without Lin Muzhi, he was all they had left now, and they were struggling to hold themselves together without breaking down.
They never expected that in just a moment's turn, he would simply vanish.
"Dad, they must have ulterior motives; they're trying to ruin our Lin family! Muzhi would never act like this on his own; there must be a conspiracy behind it!"
As he spoke these words, he looked at the two who had moved closer.
She was, in name, his younger sister.
"Brother, what are you staring at us for? Do you doubt that we could kidnap Xiao Jie?"
Every time such a situation arose, they liked to shift the blame onto themselves. It was one thing to entertain that faint sense of guilt before, but now that Lin Mu Zhi had developed such deep feelings, they still showed no restraint. Did they expect him to endure this indefinitely?
The old man waved his hand. "Let’s not discuss this for now. Prepare the money and then find someone to report it to the police."
He recalled that there should still be three hundred million in the Lin family's account, but it was nearly time to drain their resources. Before coming here, Lin Mu Zhi's parents had heard about the ransom amount, and their faces had stiffened at the news. The couple standing beside them looked equally grim.
Eventually, it was they who spoke up. "Dad, there’s not even three hundred million left in the company account; we’re still short by over a million."
The old man hadn’t expected that there would still be a mistake at this point. "When you reported to me last month, wasn’t there still over three hundred million? Where has all the money gone?"
"That’s something you’ll have to ask your brother," came the reply.
The old man's gaze shifted to Lin Mu Zhi's parents as he suppressed a flicker of anger within him and said, "Then let you two explain."
"It’s not like Mu Zhi hit someone and just ran away. The victim's family is demanding compensation—over a million."
"Over a million? Have you lost your mind?"
"What kind of compensation requires that much money?"
To put it plainly, they just wanted to balance their son’s accounts! Usually, he could overlook it; after all, Old Man Lin had long seen that Lin Mu Zhi was not a serious child. All his hopes were pinned on his other grandson.
And now? They were telling him the money was gone.
"We're also left with no choice! That person refuses to write a letter of understanding. What if this child ends up in prison and loses his mind?"
The woman began to cry.
"If he loses his mind, so be it! What about your younger son? What are we supposed to do now? You tell me!"
When Zheng Ru Feng came looking for Lin Yuan, Lin Yuan was somewhat surprised by his arrival. He soon learned about the Lin family's extortion case.
"So you're saying a child from the Lin family has been kidnapped? The kidnappers are demanding three hundred million for ransom and want me to help find the child?"
Lin Yuan was speechless. There were plenty of other people at the police station; there was no need for them to specifically call him for this matter. Where had all those previous officers gone?
Zheng Ru Feng also just realized that he actually had connections with the Lin family.
The phone call had already come through, and if he was unwilling to answer, then so be it; he could just say he didn't have the time. It was no big deal for now.
Since the other party had said as much, Zheng Rufeng decided to give him the contact number for the Lin family. Knowing that Lin Yuan was going to help him find his child, Lin Mu's parents, despite their previous grievances against him, had no choice but to set those aside for the moment.
The police had arrived directly, while Old Master Lin couldn't come due to his advanced age.
As soon as the call connected, the first question was about money.
"Is it about money?" Lin Yuan asked.
The secretary confirmed with certainty. "Yes."
This was strange; according to last month's account, their current liquid assets were just over three hundred million. The ransom they were asking for was roughly in that range as well.
Lin Yuan tapped his fingers on the table and looked at them. "Is this something your internal personnel are involved in?"
The secretary hesitated. "Basically, only shareholders can see these accounts, but the shareholders of the Lin family are all well-off; they shouldn't be involved."
"What about the finance department? Can't they see it too?"
When asked, Lin Mu's father forced a smile that looked extremely unnatural and strained.
"This shouldn't have anything to do with finance, right?"
"It seems like it might," Lin Yuan replied. "Could it be that someone from finance got in through the back door?"
He turned to the secretary. "Please find me the information on that finance person, including their current home address and whether they own a car. If we can identify a suspect quickly, we can also determine the location of the kidnapped person and expedite their rescue."
Seeing his decisive actions, the man had nothing to say and could only remain silent. The secretary frowned as he relayed this information to Old Master Lin, who was waiting on the other end.
